02.01.2022 Speech Pathologist Jennifer, in our Western Melbourne team, has been supporting Josephine to use technology to communicate more easily with others. Josephine is hearing impaired and relies a lot on lip-reading to engage in conversations with friends and family and when out in the community. Unfortunately, face masks have made it more difficult for Jennifer to do this. With the help of a speech to text system, Josephine is now engaging in more conversations at home with ...her support worker and her sister. The technology has also helped Josephine when she's out and about in the community. She finds it easier to speak to her doctor about her health, understand the exercises her physiotherapist is recommending, and she knows how much money she needs to pay when shopping. Well done Josephine. Communication plays such an important part in enabling people to live a good everyday life. 01.01.2022 Adding exercise and activity into our daily routine is well known to have many health benefits however many of us are still putting off pulling on the sneakers. Exercise doesnt have to be a 5k run or require a membership. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity and at least 2 days a week of muscle-strengthening activity for adults. The hardest part is starting, so find a spare 5 minutes here and there... it all adds up! At Everyday Independence our physiotherapists work with people living with disabilities to be more physically active and overcome some of the barriers to exercise that they may encounter due to their disability. No matter what your ability, there are ways to be active and enjoy the benefits of moving your body. Here are some tips from Lauren, a physiotherapist from our Inner Eastern Melbourne team, for getting in some heart pumping activity: 1. Any exercise is better than no exercise. Exercise comes in many forms, including dancing, gardening and cleaning the house. Energetic activities such as vacuuming and digging in the garden are great ways to raise your heart rate and increase flexibility and strength. 2. Doing exercise which you enjoy will keep you motivated and more likely to stick to a regular exercise routine. Whether this is dancing to your favourite tracks, or walking the dog. Make it fun! 3. Arent motivated exercising on your own? Find out a workout buddy to keep your accountable or support you with your chosen exercise. Or in social distancing fashion, create a playlist full of your favourite tunes or podcasts to keep yourself engaged while working out!

01.01.2022 Anthony loves to play golf but due to COVID-19 restrictions, he is unable to get to the golf course. His Everyday Independence therapists Ronald and Isabella came up with a way he can still play golf from the safety of his home. Through the Everyday Magic Program, they were able to purchase a mini-golf set for Anthony to use at home. Anthony can now set up his own golf courses around the house and continue to play the sport he loves and work toward achieving his goals. Thanks... to the #EverydayMagic Program, Anthony can continue to maintain meaningful activities during current restrictions and get creative with the courses he designs. The #EverydayMagic program enables therapists to enrich the lives of the people we support by empowering them to purchase items for a person they support which can positively impact their lives, which are not funded under the #NDIS.

01.01.2022 One of our admin team members who is a mum to primary aged children recently read the Awesome Autistic Go-To Guide and recommends it as a great read. The book is written by two Autistic advocates Yenn Purkis and Tanya Masterman and explores what it feels like to be a young autistic person and the wonderful things autistic people can do. Full of insights about being awesome and autistic, this book celebrates the strengths of understanding the world in a different way and hel...ps children to develop their confidence to be who they are. Do you have a suggestion about a great book on being autistic that you and your child have read?
