13.01.2022 Prime Minister Scott Morrison is urging states to agree on a criteria for COVID-19 hotspots to get borders reopened, saying the Federal Government will go its o...wn way if National Cabinet doesn't agree. The top medical advisory panel, the AHPPC, is formulating a definition of what a hotspot is, so states and territories can make border decisions based on the same advice. But Mr Morrison says if leaders can't agree on a definition at National Cabinet, the Commonwealth will adopt an official position anyway. If that happens, the Government can't force states and territories to use the same definition, but Mr Morrison said it would help ensure "transparency" about how border closures are implemented. "This will be essential for states and territories to establish containment strategies and move away from border restrictions," he said. "We will have one, whether it's the Commonwealth one alone or one agreed by the states, but there will be one. "That will be necessary I think for the transparency of arrangements that are put in place by the states and territories." The Prime Minister said keeping borders closed until a vaccine is discovered was a recipe for "economic ruin. "In many of the border communities, residents are simply trying to move from one COVID-free region to another COVID-free region," Mr Morrison said.
