20.01.2022 From Tom Vartzokas GLENDI 2019 As a Past Chairman of this Great Event, and a Past-President of the Lions Club of Adelaide Hellenic, I am saddened to learn that ...you will not be hosting a Glendi Festival in 2019. This is not only a disappointment for me but also for many thousands of South Australians. The Glendi Festival began in 1977 with the aim of showcasing Greek culture, in its many guises; art, food and wine, dance, and lifestyle, and has been an icon of multi-cultural Festivals, Australia wide. The Festival concept originated in the minds of great visionaries of that time, and also the Lions Club of Adelaide Hellenic. Throughout it’s existence it has remained a fund raising event of the Lions Club, with all net proceeds being distributed back into the community. Its principal aim in the early years was to establish an Aged Care Facility for Greek Australians. It achieved that aim, and along with other groups in the Greek Australian community contributed many thousands of dollars to facilitate the establishment of an Aged Care Facility in Ridleyton. It saddens me also, to learn that one of the reasons the Festival will not be held in 2019, is because there are people in the community actively working to undermine the Glendi, its reputation, its sponsors and its goodwill, because the IP is owned and jealously guarded by the Lions Club. The ownership structure of Glendi is what has given it its strength and universal appeal over its many years. It has operated and supported the SA Greek-Australian community without bias or prejudice. The Lions Organisation is an honest, transparent worldwide philanthropic and benevolent organisation, that has supported many worthwhile charities. Any attempt to besmirch its standing or reputation is very malicious. Whilst opportunity exists for groups or individuals to participate, coordinate and influence the operations of the Glendi, any attempt to extinguish the connection of the Festival with the Lions Club of Adelaide Hellenic should be resisted, lest the status and neutrality and unbiased reputation of the event be compromised. I hope that the current impasse can be resolved quickly so that a path forward to 2020 can be laid, and we can all again enjoy the fantastic event that it Glendi. 01.01.2022 We wish everyone a Happy New Year and may 2020 be a bit brighter, happier, healthier & loving. We will now take a well deserved break, make some new exciting changes to the Club and see you all back in March.
