16.01.2022 Student Instructions for downloading Minecraft Education Edition and how to have a virtual hangout with their class. I have done recordings for Mac and Windows.
15.01.2022 Bec spoke to Sammy J on ABC Melbourne this morning about the joys of Minecraft. Listen in for tips on managing the game as a parent, using it as a teacher and how playing it can increase social connectedness during remote learning. The best way to understand the risks of multiplayer online games is to play with your children. They may be the expert on the game, but you are the expert on their safety. Start a conversation by asking:... -How they ‘chat’ to friends -Who their friends are and whether they know them in real life (IRL) -How they can block and report bad behaviour (check out the eSafety Guide if you don’t know- see comments) Always keep devices in a shared space and out of bedrooms. Listen to the interview here: https://www.abc.net.au//progr/breakfast/breakfast/12632984
15.01.2022 Can your child identify where webcams are in your house? Do they: -use a device that uses GPS? -take pictures of themselves or others using devices?... -share devices with siblings? -know how to avoid and close pop-ups? -watch Youtube? These are potential danger areas for young children. Knowing how to teach online safety to a preschooler can be tough, particularly if you are not a confident user of technology yourself. This brilliant resource comes from the Australian Federal Police and is designed to help parents and teachers educate kids about the importance of keeping safe online. This site has practical advice and interactive games to help your preschooler understand and avoid risks associated with online spaces and devices. For educators, there is a range of lesson plans aligned with educational outcomes that are short, sharp, and easy to implement in your classroom. This program provides a solid foundation to build upon in online safety for young children. Start the conversation today. https://playingitsafe.org.au/ The Family Tech Agreement from The eSafety Commissioner's Office is also a wonderful supporting activity for parents to complete at home with their children. https://www.esafety.gov.au//children/family-tech-agreement

14.01.2022 Hi parents and teachers! The start of term is a great time to revise the basics of online safety. Webcam safety is an important part of protecting your privacy online. Students are often unaware that most devices contain inbuilt webcams that could be used to record them without their knowledge. Webcam safety tips:... -Cover webcams when not in use -Keep devices out of bedrooms and bathrooms -Encourage students to wear suitable clothing when in front of a webcam or video call This short video gives students an explanation of webcam safety and a fun craft activity they can complete at home. We’d love to see what your kids come up with. Post your designs below! https://youtu.be/qAVCrSVbuuU
14.01.2022 We have seen an increase in the number of students using devices to record themselves and others on school grounds or during online learning. It's hard for teachers and students to feel safe when they're being recorded and shared online. Our new workshops empower and educate students to know that filming and posting images without consent isn't fair to anyone. If your school is experiencing issues with online safety or digital wellbeing (particularly as students readjust to expectations of the classroom), contact us for a quote.
13.01.2022 This podcast contains some really interesting content in a fun format. The pace is fast and the background sounds can make it hard to catch the detail, so I’d recommend listening in a quiet space (car or walk) so you can really focus. Some really great info on Australia Post, NAB and the JB HI-FI scams which have been prevalent during covid and tripped a lot of people up. At 10 mins an episode it’s a quick way to empower yourself with the knowledge on current scams.... https://podcasts.apple.com//this-is-not-your/id1525498533
12.01.2022 Please be careful and double check any videos before allowing your child to view links through *safeshare.tv* or *safeyoutube* today. Lots of teachers, from schools all over the world, are reporting that links they have posted onto their online classrooms have since changed to random videos, that in a lot of cases are exposing their students to inappropriate content.
11.01.2022 This is a great resource for parents/caters wanting to put in place or reinforce rules in the home around device use and online safety. I particularly like the advice on switching your wifi off overnight so everyone takes a break. This provide peace of mind when we are all busy preparing for Christmas, preparing for holidays or madly finishing work. Wifi breaks are also great for breaking device dependency which may have creeped in after remote learning. Just remember switch...ing the wifi off won’t affect devices with a sim (such as mobile phones). -Keep devices out of bedrooms (and bathrooms) -Cover webcams when not in use -Use complex passwords and change them up for the different programs you use -Identify who trusted adults are -Teach children to trust their gut https://danielmorcombe.com.au/safe-bedrooms/

01.01.2022 Family tracking apps, like all programs, can be used for bad rather than good. This research goes someway to explain what we have seen in the field. We offer a specific workshop for parents/carers in vulnerable positions on how to manage their child’s device to improve their personal and family safety. Tracking by a partner in an acrimonious separation is pretty common. Tracking apps can be easily hidden on a child’s device or in plain sight (like Find my Phone or Apple Fami...ly Sharing). Often mother’s have no idea their child’s device is listening in or tracking their movements. 1800 Respect offer support but it is also worth checking your local family services to manage your family’s devices to check for non-consensual tracking like The Orange Door. https://www.1800respect.org https://orangedoor.vic.gov.au https://www.esafety.gov.au//children-and-techn/infographic
