07.01.2022 FREE - SUSTAINABLE - ENERGY EFFICIENT - HOUSE DESIGNS Here's a link to a free download of sustainable energy efficient housing designs offered by the Australian... government. These free downloads include floor plans, elevations, sections, roof plans and even writen specifications. They are professionally documented residential solutions that refect sound sustainability and energy efficient design principles, and all available right now for FREE online (Check out the Yourhome.gov.au website below). Hmmm... Is it just me, or does it appears the game may be about to radically change for architects. Yesterday we may have asked: "How can I make money from this, and who will pay most?" Today we seem increasingly to be rather asking: "Is this going to add real and meaningful value to our individual and collective future ... and if so, how might we maximise distribution to those that can enjoy maximum benefit? Is architecture, with a conventional fee for service model, likely then to be running into a spot of trouble? Much of the core business of architecture seems to have been wittled away, bit by bit over recent years: A sizable portion of the management of time and cost in building procurement was lost to the emergence of "Project Management" as a profession; The core process of documentation is now also progressively being passed offshore to low cost foreign labour markets, or taken up by building designers rather than architects (what's the difference many may ask?); Technology's increasing efficiency and diversity is also progressively reducing the human component of the design process; and of course, you can also now also get free house designs online from governance. So. I'm an architect. Why would I bring these free architecture design plans to the attention of the public at large? Isn't this in direct competition to my own offering of service to the world? Wouldn't I be best to keep quiet and hope this all goes away quietly? Well, from my perspective, if the field of architecture cannot provide authetic value at an affordable rate similar to other providers, the problem remains with the profession. I personally believe that architects have extraordinary potential over and above the type of competition mentioned above; much of this potential may however, as yet, remain unrealised for many professional architects. Perhaps the field may need to reconsider both its value exchange model and the nature and range of its potential and unique top end value services. So what might be the new and unique key roles, purpose, value and services offered by architects into the emerging future? A Bit about the Crucial Dual Role of Context and Listening: The quality of architecture is a direct function of its sensitivity and responsiveness to unique contexts. Context refers to the uniqueness of any project proposition: its unique site - the place in which it is integrally engaged, the unique quality, composition and orientation of light, air, sun, soil, vegitation, views, sounds, and other sensory ques; its unique users and beneficiaries - who are we designing for? what are their unique aspirations, challenges, potentials and opportunities? what are their relationships with nature, family, friends, community, vegitation, gardens, outdoor entertainment, integration of work/play/life/meaning. So, what if the cost saving (ie FREE) of off the shelf design solutions made it a reasonable option for many new home makers? How might an architect still add significant value for these same folks with limited additional outlay? The truth may be that the really big value offering from contextually sensitive architects, over and above "building designers", includes key human capacities such as the following: 1. the up front development of meaningful briefs, of genuine relevance and authentic value to unique owner/end user/communities, through a process of deep respectful listening with an open mind and heart; a willingness to listen and learn; 2. the capacity to grow and expand a clients perspective of what is possible - exploring and innovating beyond reasonable business as usual solutions, to provide extraordinary value, and truly remarkable experiences, events, and interventions; 3. The capacity to facilitate a transformational process; that is, not just design and construct buildings at a new level of creative possibility, but also expand a clients thinking, being and general quality of life and personal engagment with context. Carefully facilitated design processes can be therapeutic; liberating life and vitality, and expanding the mind and heart of the participants. 4. Truly Great design facilitates Life... the Life and Lifestyle of the users and an expanded stakeholder circle of beneficiaries, and liberating the natural vitality of the site and broader context in nature, culture and society. Without a consciously self-aware practitioner leading, or engaged with, the team, authentic listening and its higher leverage value outcomes remain a matter of chance rather that intention. Deeply Intentional Design outcomes require the formal application of self-awareness, consciousness, intention and attention. The point to be made here perhaps is that Life cannot be liberated by a drawing alone, free or otherwise. The conscious intention of a capable practitioner, in collaboration with an active, open minded, open hearted client circle, can become the catalyst for both deeper meaning, and meaningful change. It would appear that the future of the profession of architecture may now be significantly influenced by its capacity to form and offer fresh, new and meaningful value propositions, over and above the expanding field of free and discounted services increasingly available (including the pre-designed, architecturally informed, residential designs to point). The capacity to listen deeply, to lean into the needs, desires, aspirations, opportunities and potentials of a people and a place, and empower meaningful change, may be about to become a new benchmark for practice leadership. The key roles of transformational leadership, self-awareness, facilitation, and deep listening can be learnt, and have become a particular specialty within the growing field of exectutive coaches supporting designers, design processes, and design thinking in recent years. So... If you're thinking of building... go checkout these free sustainble energy-efficient housing designs. Then... find yourself an architect with the sensitivity and capacity to listen deeply, to assist you to fine tune your newly emerging habitat into an integral solution that will bring life, vitality and joy, to your site, your family, your community, your local ecology, your life and perhaps even our collective future. And... if your an architect, reeling in the throws of a world gone crazy, and wondering what the future might hold for yourself and your team, think about reaching out to an expereinced life coach or executive coach.
