24.01.2022 Ever wonder how to pick the perfect avocado at the grocery store? It can be quite tricky, and avocados can be fickle in their ripeness. Paying attention to the colour is essential when picking a ripe avocado. The darker the colour, the more overripe it will be. Finding a shade in between the lightest and darkest colour green will help you find the perfect avocado. Use your finger to gently press on the avocado to feel how firm it is. If it feels firm, but not mushy, and h...as the right colour -- you have found your avocado. While we're talking about avocados, I'll also share my hack with keeping it fresh in the fridge after cutting. Hi my name is Brooke and I’m the qualified Clinical Nutritionist and Naturopath behind @evolvednutrition and I recently celebrated my 42nd birthday! I’m a working and studying mother of two teens, and it was my own health journey and that of my kids that lead me to study and become a health practitioner. ... I also have two small dogs that try to occasionally greet and farewell my clients that visit my home based clinic situated here in Hobart, TAS. I LOVE food! 21.01.2022 Have you ever cooked with turnips before? Turnips are versatile, and you can enjoy the leaves and the turnip all the same. You can roast them, mash them for a "mashed potato" feel, or use them in stews, soups, and stir-fry. Pretty much anywhere you'd use a potato, you can substitute a turnip. Turnip fries are a hit, too! ... Turnips are in season during the colder months, but can be harvested into late November here in Australia. Keep an eye out at your grocers and add a few to your grocery list and give them a try next time you see them. With the sunny days we're having now, it's not the easiest time of year to start going to bed early and working on a new habit, but it's an important time to take extra care when you can. It's incredible how different you can make the same ingredients taste by using different flavours, and this is one of my favourite ways to experiment in the kitchen. 11.01.2022 Tacos seem to be a universal love language - wouldn't you agree? I've never met a person who didn't love a taco, and one thing we all love so much about them is how versatile they are. There are endless options to stuff your taco shell with, and I'd love to know what you typically put in yours. My go-to taco includes quinoa crusted fish, homemade tartare, crisp lettuce, finely diced red onion, tomato, DF cheese, and avocado in a GF white corn soft taco.... I also love to deconstruct it and leave off the shell -- all of the delicious toppings on a small bed of lettuce with guacamole and salsa hits the spot. 08.01.2022 In the current climate we're all in, anxious feelings may be at an all-time high for you, as it is for many. The holiday season coming up can also add to these anxiety levels -- although, hopefully, that's not the case for you. I want to share a simple hack I use when my anxiety levels feel like they're rising, hoping that it could help you or someone you love. It's a simple calm down method using your senses, and it only takes a few minutes to make a big difference. Next... time you feel your mind or heart racing, tap into your surroundings, and ground yourself. Go through each of your five senses. Find one thing you can touch, one thing you can focus on that you can see, one thing you currently smell, etc. Using this trick helps to stop your racing mind, bring yourself to the moment, and calm you down quickly. One of the most helpful ways I've learned to disconnect is to turn off my notifications for social media. When you don't get pop-up notifications or see the little red number on your social media app showing you how many messages are waiting on you, it feels much less important and compell...ing. Doing this can help you disconnect immediately and not be continually looking at your phone every time a notification pops up. It's so simple, has no harmful ingredients, and you probably already have what you need in your pantry. You can make so many variations with different ingredients, but a simple and effective one is mixing brown su...gar and liquid coconut oil. Find a small mason jar or container with a lid and fill halfway with brown sugar. Drizzle your liquid coconut oil in and stir until it is well mixed and wet. Voila! This leaves you so many options and is so easily adaptable to whatever you're pairing it with for dinner. Take regular hummus and add fresh toppings to make it "loaded" -- and make it however you wish! ... 03.01.2022 One of my favourite 'unusual' vegetables is undoubtedly spaghetti squash. Have you ever tried it? I was confused by it for so long and only recently tried it a few years ago - and I'm so glad I did. I couldn't wrap my head around how a squash turned into spaghetti, but it's real, and it's delicious. It's so versatile, inexpensive, and healthy. How to cook a Spaghetti Squash:... Preheat oven to 190C. Slice length-wise (be careful!) & scoop out seeds. Drizzle with olive oil and favourite seasonings. Flip upside down on the baking sheet to cook, so the outside of the squash is facing up. Cook for 1 hour. Remove from oven and use a fork to loosen squash into strings. 01.01.2022 The ease of grabbing a pre-made veggie stock is great when time is tight, but planning to make your own will add a pop of flavour you can't get from the box. Stocks are great for soups, stews, and even cooking your vegetables in for extra flavour. Here's a simple recipe to make your vegetable stock. You can get creative with the veggies you add -- you can't mess this up! 1 onion, 2-3 stalks celery, 1 tbsp minced garlic, 1 tbsp olive oil, 2-3 carrots, 1 tsp pepper, 1 tsp sa...lt, 8 cups water, 1/2 cup mushrooms, fresh herbs such as parsley, thyme, and rosemary are great additions. 2 bay leaves. Chop your veggies into small pieces. Add oil to your pot & sauté your ingredients for approximately 10 minutes. Add water and bring to a boil. Simmer for about 30-45 minutes. Strain broth - and voila!
