24.01.2022 This morning in Australia we all woke up to yet another tough-news day. Coronavirus numbers continue to rise in Victoria and Sydney, now also in suburbs and cities that were last week considered 'Covid-free' and we are in mourning with Lebanon, seeing those horrendous images from an explosion in Beirut. We had a pre-scheduled Evolve team meeting this morning and at the end of the meeting, our Director Josephine took a few moments to check in with everyone - deliberately as...king 'Are you doing ok today?' and for a few minutes, we shared, and felt that bit less isolated and so much more understood. And we didn't even have a KitKat to do it! ;-) At Evolve MGMT Co. we celebrate this partnership between KitKat and R U OK?, especially in this time of uncertainty and for many, the incredible challenges of isolation. There's nothing as uncomfortable as hearing someone mispronounce your name - do you make it awkward and correct them the first time? 05.01.2022 It needs to be said - it's hard to try to be/think strategically when you're doing it via Zoom/Teams. For many of us, this global pandemic has caused a welcome disruption to the misconceived notion that 'working from home doesn't work for the company...' and widely, management seems to be taking their time with bringing teams fully back into the office, if at all. Despite the initial blip in output as we all adjusted to the prospect of Armageddon - we've found a daily rhyth...m and have been enjoying the benefits of working in our pyjama bottoms and avoiding peak hour traffic. But it's not all walking the dog in your lunchbreak and cups of tea on the front porch. The endless tide of screen-based meetings are exhausting for a myriad of reasons: for one, your brain can't read all the sub-conscious cues it's used to unconsciously absorbing, which in turn forces your conscious mind to work much harder than it would need to in face-to-face scenarios. There's also no change of environment and the reprieve of pause that usually comes from gathering up your belongings and moving from one room to another. Instead, the same desk, same screen, and a couple of clicks and we're required to flip our focus and bring fresh energy to a new virtual meeting - and we wonder why we're all exhausted. It's been well documented that it takes time and a certain level of self-control to create healthy work/life balance when working from home. Creating a space for work that's not on the dining table where you eat your family meals. Not replying to emails from the lounge at 11 pm at night. Generally carving out time and space so that it's clear to yourself (and your family) when it's 'work time' and when it's 'personal time'. And we are all getting our heads around this and doing quite well. We've spent time focussing on the importance of connection during these times of forced isolation - maybe it's time to apply the same level of intentionality to screen-based meetings? While we'd never want work habits to take three steps backwards to pre-pandemic times and being chained to the office all day, every day - there's something to be said for being in the same room, bouncing ideas around with the team - in person. Restrictions have started to ease and we are beginning to have conversations about what a new kind of normal will look like for time spent in the office. It's the perfect time to start an open dialogue and agreeing to schedule any creative strategy and think tank meeting on days everyone agrees to work from the office together - an easy step forward in combatting screen-fatigue and fostering the connection we all need from colleagues. Perhaps it is time to reconnect and come together. But just sometimes. :-) #evolvedthinking #redefiningyourstrategy #rebrand
