23.01.2022 A weekend in nature has revived me! I’ve practised what I preach: physical activity, fresh air and family time. Plus I can tick the disappearing tarn off the must see list (just before it disappears again). It can be hard to prioritise these sorts of activities and we can get consumed by obligation, domestic duties, stress, etc, but it usually pays off for your mental health when you can put the mental to-do list aside and do something meaningful.

22.01.2022 I am grateful for fresh flowers!

20.01.2022 This note to myself has turned up in my notebook so I am practising what I preach and taking a break for a few mins!

18.01.2022 Today is the start of Mental Health Month. I've made this promise as a bit of an umbrella for what I'm hoping is a month of self-nurturing. What's your mental health promise?

16.01.2022 Grief. We all experience it. It’s inevitable. Unfortunately, our language and approach to grief is often closed and isolating, promoting emotional shut down and withdrawal rather than expression and healing. If you have time, this beautiful video about grief tells the story of people's grief in a very personal way. You may be able to relate to the experiences or you may be able to support someone grieving more confidently in the future. https://speakinggrief.org/documentary

15.01.2022 I had intended to post something on World Mental Health Day, which was Saturday, but I was busy living This oatmeal comic beautifully sums up why being happy may be an unrealistic ideal. Really hits the mark for me. Meaningful actions are far more important for me that aspiring to be happy. That doesn’t mean I can’t experience excitement, joy, elation, etc along the way, but the normal state for me is better thought of as neutral, with a whole lot of emotions that can occ...ur at any given point - often more than one at a time!!! Have a great week everyone. https://theoatmeal.com/comics/unhappy

14.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. I thought this video captured what being a dad looks like in challenging situations - those moments when you have to step up and step in. For all those people who are struggling with Father’s Day this year due to loss, longing, challenging relationships or lack of sleep, I’m thinking of you. ... https://www.facebook.com/LADbible/videos/948650208943883/

08.01.2022 It was a pleasure to add Myf’s name to the list on the window today (the lettering finally arrived in the post). I love that we have a group of like-minded practitioners delivering mental health services to our community from Percy Street.

07.01.2022 More than 1 in 3 Australians experience chronic/persistent pain. This week is Psychology week and it is focusing on pain and how psychology can help. If you or a loved one experiences chronic pain, check out this free public online event: http://psychweek.org.au/webinar/

06.01.2022 I love this quote! Is crying good for you? Genuine emotional crying (as opposed to shedding a tear when you have something stuck in your eye, for instance) leads to nervous system activity. Both the fight-flight (sympathetic) and the rest and restore (parasympathetic) nervous systems are activated, but importantly the parasympathetic activity lasts longer than the sympathetic. This might be why there is often a feeling of relief or sense of calm after crying. Crying can be a... marker of strong emotions, showing that something important is happening in our lives. So don't hold back those powerful tears!
