25.01.2022 , ’ . . @glennondoyle Most of us run and hide from our pain, don’t we? We wear a mask (or a smile) to cover it up and to make sure people don’t know that we have those feelings or those experiences. This is the danger zone. ... This is most of the work I end up doing with my clients.. diving deep into the past and unearthing the pain and feelings we pretend not to have.. that had been buried deep down so that it cannot be seen yet are still wreaking so much havoc in other ways. Most of the time we believe this is a much better option than dealing with it because it’s too painful, easier to be put into a box and forgotten about. The problem here? It tends to come out in other ways.. drinking, exercise, overworking, drugs, anxiety, depression, people pleasing, overthinking, overachieving, perfectionism.. This is a reminder today that life is not easy. It can be hard but it is a beautiful rollercoaster. To expect it it be easy is an unrealistic expectation which only leads to disappointment. We often think we are doing it badly when actually we are just experiencing all that life has to offer - the sadness, the joy, the pain, the loss, the excitement, the boredom, the hurt... that list goes on. If you are avoiding your pain and it is causing more damage than good, start doing something about it. When we to go through our ‘clutter’ and , , there is a sense of , that goes along with it.. not to mention the from your shoulders. Some of us have a system to keep our lives clutter free and regularly clear things out, others might wait untill an unexpected guest is coming over and then there are those of us who just push everything into a cupboard and tell ourselves we will deal with that later. .. many of us leave our thoughts, feelings, pain, trauma and emotions in a cupboard that no one else can see, with the intention of .. if ever at all. ? Eventually that cupboard will become so full that the door will not close and things begin to fall out creating a mess when you least expected it. There are many things in life that we cannot control and that can be frustrating, however puts you right back into the drivers seat of your own life. All to often (and it used to be me ) of; ... How easy others have it How hard it is for me, What if it fails What if I embarrass my self/ others judge me I don’t have the time.. But this is not helpful when you are trying to move forward. We live in a time where most of us share the of our lives through social media though find ourselves comparing our worst moments, to others best. ... For 15 years I have worked directly with people to make them feel better.. whether it was during my time as a stylist, my time as a sales assistant, my time as a trainer or my time as a coach - the number one insecurity people have is not feeling like they are enough.... Pretty enough. Skinny enough. Tanned enough. Toned enough. Rich enough. Smart enough. Cool enough. Stylish enough. That list goes on and on. This image is a huge reason why! We are comparing ourselves to polished and edited versions of people’s bodies, faces and lives. And we have been doing it for decades thanks the unattainable portrayal of beauty across magazines and industries such as fashion and beauty, not to mention most marketing campaigns we see. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a good filter and love a beautiful image BUT I know not to compare myself to them. 17.01.2022 #mentalhealthawarenessmonth kicked off yesterday, and I’m so proud to be part of a generation openly discussing something which has been so closed off and hidden for so many decades prior. I know we have a long way to go, but causes such as this are the #wayforward in making #mentalillness as #accepted as physical illness and disease.... ’ . This is a cause that is very close to my own heart with a number of my closest friends and family members suffering at some stage of their lives; from stress, anxiety, depression, bipolar through to losing their fight to suicide. This month I will focus on mental health awareness in the hope that I can help one person feel less alone or to understand more about what someone else may be going through in silence. I easily forget just how good I feel when I choose me over everything else and how recharged I feel as a result. Whether it’s a coffee, a wine, a bath, a movie, a massage or a good long run... This track down at Tunks Park in Northbridge is one of my go to’s when I feel the need to clear my head and find my calm. It’s such a peaceful, picturesque walk and you can’t help but switch off when you are there. ... There’s something really special about getting out in nature and feeling far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. 16.01.2022 ? You guessed it - January! Why?... Because people naturally begin to feel more inspired, motivated with a new found sense of possibility for their own lives. As a coach, nothing is more fulfilling or exciting. They are ready to set goals, intentions and visions for themselves. As I posted yesterday, we don’t need New Years for this but for so many, there is a natural drive that kicks in around this time compared to any other. Part of the challenge, though, is helping people get past the 19th January, which is known as because that’s the average time people commit to their New Years goals and resolutions. Why? .. This was % me 8 years ago.. setting, intending and giving up at the first sign of challenge.. like waking up feeling , using going back to work as an , finding it and that was it. Back to my ‘old’ self. Goals and intentions a gone.. until next year. So if this sounds like you, here are a few tips; 1 - get really clear in what you want. 2 ’ - this must be bigger than your excuses. 3 - your mantra and your word for the year - these will be your personal support system. 4 - 60% more effective than sitting in your head. 5 - this is the number one mistake people make. 6 ! 14.01.2022 3 ways to manage your stress levels If I know anything, it’s stress. I worked for a high end fashion brand for 10 years and like most fashion brands, everything needed to be done yesterday and you were responsible for things well outside of your job description.... Don’t get me wrong, I loved it!! I stayed for 10 years because I absolutely loved the fast pace, the excitement, the connections and the constant rush of adrenaline each task and season brought. The problem came down to how I managed my stress levels.. Or failed to! Looking back, I wish I had known a few things about how to manage those good and bad stress levels - so here are a few tips to on how I managed mine so that you can manage yours too: . ! We all have things we need in our life in order for us to feel good - without them we feel a little off or flat. Mine include; making time to cook, exercise, see friends and listen to music. The moment I integrate these into my day I instantly feel lighter. So, what’s your recipe? And what’s missing that could brighten your mood and your day? . When we are overloaded in one area of our lives eg work, inevitably the other areas take a hit. Don’t get me wrong, life will never be completely balanced though when we intentionally focus on how to even these out, the better we become at managing our stress levels. If this is a stretch for you, simply choose one area that needs some attention and set 1 goal for this week to improve it. 3. ! Stress for me comes when I take too much on or don’t ask for help. Learning to set a clear boundary for yourself and/or for those around you will help you manage those stress levels. People pleasers and perfectionists in particular fall into the trap of saying yes all the time or setting standards which are too high and create a world of stress and anxiety. 07.01.2022 , . I watched the Rising Phoenix on Netflix, a documentary about member of the Paraolympic teams and wow - what an eye opener that was. ... In this picture is @bebe_vio gold medalist for fencing and she survived Meningitis at age 11. As a result of the disease she lost most of her arms and legs. And . She pursued her passion and her dream despite obvious challenges and won gold! Her attitude and her spirit are incredibe Why was I crying? Because .. as I watched these incredibly inspired, driven and motivated paraoplympians I realised what true struggle and fight must be. Listening to their stories made me question my own capabilities and . Each of these athletes have had to break barriers to achieve what they wanted to in life, even if others thought they cannot. 06.01.2022 Morning strolls Recently, my little one has decided sleep is for fools and he refuses to sleep before 9pm.. by the time I get out of his room it’s closer to 9:30 and my mum brain just can go straight to bed or I’ll miss out on the sacred time to myself before the crazy starts the following day!! (All parents of a toddler can relate I’m sure). I’m left with the choice of going to sleep and getting up earlier to enjoy the morning to myself or to stay up much later and en...joy the peace and quiet then. In the moment, it’s always such a hard choice to make! Last night I forced myself to sleep instead of switching off with some mindless watching and reminded myself just how enjoyable a morning to myself is and how peaceful life is before 7am We all have choice. 05.01.2022 Going global This is a image of a session I had with a client from Columbia - sharing his goals we were working through via Zoom. Covid has highlighted for me just how lucky we are to be in a time where connection has become so easy. ... In 2005, when I was 19, I moved to a small town in Ireland with my younger sister. I was born in Ireland and had moved to Australia when I was 3, so as much as there were extended family back in Ireland, it was a long way from my friends and immediate family. I remember having to use a pay phone (remember those! ) to call my family and only being able to afford 10 minutes every few weeks... (Look, I made some interesting choices as a 19 year old when it came to my priorities and my spending). Connection was so much harder back then! There was no Facebook, WhatsApp, FaceTime or Skype back then, so the distance between us felt so much greater. Today, I have the privilege of connecting with clients all around the world; Egypt, Columbia, London, Singapore, Texas, Melbourne.. I am not limited by my location and I get to understand the lives, experiences and stories of those who have grown up in cultures different to my own. There are days where to feel lower in energy and am unsure why until I stop and think about what I’ve been doing physically and what’s been going on mentally/emotionally. Can you relate? ... For me, these are my top energy stealers; 1 Stress is the number one culprit for stealing energy 2 An overly full schedule with zero down time booked in. 3 Spending too much time with others Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE people more than anything however I recharge best when I spend time alone. Life is busy. I know that just as much as anyone and having curious toddler means refilling my cup is vital for me to function at my best with good energy levels, so a little bit of self care really goes a long way here. 02.01.2022 Imagine waking up without self doubt, fear of failure or what if’s holding you back. The thing is, it’s so easy to be inspired to take action or to ‘do something’ about things getting in our way until feelings and moods get involved. This is a reminder for anyone who feels like they are loosing the battle to those thought, feelings and emotions that are getting in the way that you are human! It’s completely natural to struggle against these things.. it’s the dail...y practice that builds your muscle, so you simply need to start. When we stop and think about it, most of us are battling negative thoughts and fears which have been present for years if not decades. It doesn’t disappear overnight, it takes consistent practice. 01.01.2022 This was me for so long.. going nowhere, fast. I used to live life with an all or nothing mentality. I was either doing or I was doing ; working out 6 days a week and eating completely clean or I was doing zero exercise and eating crap. It was the same with many areas of my life and the one link was believing the faster and more intensely I would do things, the more results I would achieve. So often I found myself either feeling burnt out, ove...rwhelmed or giving up. I was so sick of trying things for 6 weeks and giving up or feeling frustrated and guilty that I just did nothing as time passed me by. Who can relate? This was one of the first things I spoke to my coach about - it was 3 years ago when I started my coaching diploma and I was determined to complete it no matter what. I found this quote at the same time and used it as a constant reminder to find a pace that suited me and a reason that was more connected to me... not to what I though everyone else expected of me. After a few coaching sessions, I uncovered some old fears; a fear or failure, a fear of success (yep, it’s a thing!) and as a result a need to self-sabotage the moment I came close to my own success. I learned to work through these and created consistency for myself which meant I wasn’t on the rollercoaster of all or nothing that I had known so well before.
