20.01.2022 #EWBHumanitarianSpotlight They did it because they loved computersand also because they believed in the power of innovation to make peoples lives better. But they saw...it (also) leaves out those who can't afford it. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was launched in 2000 to work towards enhancing healthcare and reducing extreme poverty. ... The organisation works with different partnerships, bringing resources together to tackle global issues such as poverty and water sanitation. Their works have helped improve the quality of life of billions of people. Their organisation aligns with the facet of humanitarian engineering, since the needs of the community are prioritised, and the sustainability/appropriateness of solutions are carefully considered. Just as William H. Gates stated - "You start by finding out what people need, and then you see if technology can meet those needs in a better way." And just as the Gates Foundation did - this mission was not achieved alone Industry and non-profit organisations alike must engage in mutual collaboration to bring about humanitarian impact EVERYONE has a role in making the world a better place If you are, or know others, who may be suited such collaborations (in the smaller scale to the Gates foundation of course!) - please drop us a message! 13.01.2022 Please see below post from the WA Biomedical Engineering Society and donate if you can! Donate now to help the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research fight COVID-19. https://bit.ly/2X3hssE Our hospitals currently have a limited supply of life-saving face shields and it could be a matter of life and death if supplies run out. And this isnt even considering the needs of your local GPs who continue to see sick patients despite knowing that every mask they use means one le...ss they might need in the future. Every shield produced is helping save two lives the patient and the healthcare worker. The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research have a unique team of amazing Biomedical Engineers. Theyve set aside their own projects to develop rapid production reusable face shields to protect healthcare workers from the deadly coronavirus. They have a prototype that GPs are testing in the community. They are also hoping to roll it out to hospitals to boost the dwindling supply. Now is the time to ramp up production to meet the growing demand. But with no funds to support this, the team have been using research funds to cover production and that is not sustainable.

03.01.2022 #EWBHumanitarianSpotlight Taking a moment to shed light on one of EWB Australias Community Project: The Portable Toilet! Over at Vanuatu, it was identified through the Live and Learn Vanuatu Western Pacific Sanitation Innovation Marketing Program (WPSIMP) that many people with mobility challenges have difficulty accessing an outdoor toilet ... Many households only have a basic bush toilet often 20m from the house. This makes it extremely challenging and hazardous for the users. VERY LITTLE is available in the way of disability aids and there are currently NO OPTION for a disability access toilet in Vanuatu. To combat the issue , EWB Australia embedded volunteers to support their local team in testing a Portable Toilet. The Portable Toilet is a simple plywood box and bucket toilet designed with the purpose of supporting access to improved sanitation for people living with a disability. EWB believes in: Developing equitable, sustainable and scalable technology to ensure no one is left behind.
