According to a psychological study undertaken by the University of Bristol, England in 2007 by Richardson Wiseman, Ph.D 88% of people fail their New Year Resolution goal. In Australia, losing weight and becoming fit generally dominates the New Year Resolution List and the old favourite of Quit Smoking is still hanging in there is a ‘hurdle to jump’ - some land safely but many people ‘fall flat on their face’, often blaming lack of willpower as their reason. But how successful people will be will depend not on willpower, but on HOW THEY PLAN to achieve their particular goal. A popular Business Management saying of PEOPLE DON’T PLAN TO FAIL, THEY FAIL TO PLAN’ is spouted by many in the New Resolution arena of global information; no matter what words are used, the message is crystal clear: PLANNING FOR SUCCESS IS ESSENTIAL. My tips for SUCCESS include: MAKE YOUR GOAL SPECIFIC, REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE Initially, avoid ‘setting the bar too high’, often working with smaller goals can be more successful than a mammoth task. Now do a ‘Personal Stocktake’ of yourself and PLAN AHEAD: - WHY do I want to make this change? - WHAT do I want to change (be specific) - HOW can I break my main goal down into sub-goals? - WHAT will help me to keep to my original plan? - WHEN do I want to start? - WHO will support me (partner, friend, sibling etc.) - HOW can I prevent relapse? - WHAT can I do if I do relapse? Again, to quote a Business Management saying: WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER I wish you every success
