13.01.2022 Well today is the day 37 years ago my life as a 19 year old teenager changed , its the start of how I learned how valuable life is . The fear of knowing I could lose my life or see my shipmates lose their lives became more real this day forward till the 14th June 1982 the fact that I may have never see my family again or have the chance of getting married and having my own kids also started to become real and yet I reflect on how this time 37 years ago I also realise I have... the best family and mates in the world and that life in a combat zone also created characters, laughter and tears. I also realised that John Wayne movies in black and white werent real and that seeing private ryan before I went to the Falklands would have put the fear of god into me. I also live for today because of my mates that never made it back and would have lived life to the fullest. Yes 19 and what did I know about life, I was still a kid really and just learning my trade in The RN as a Marine Electrical Mechanic. I also believed at the time that nobody these days actually goes to war... yeah right ! And here we are 37 years later still having guys coming home from a combat zone that are still teenagers and dont really know what has just happened or what is next. I was lucky , I had a family who knew me and came and met me when i came home, family that had lived in WWII and told me that I would go into guilt mode because I made it home and my mates didnt and to remember the hard times but the comradely that would never be felt again outside the military. The memories I carry today of my time in 82 and the families of my mates who never returned who wanted to find something to hold onto as the pain of losing their son couldnt be explained. As the years have passed so have the parents of my mates and I some how feel relief as I am hoping they have reunited with my mates up there with the angles. So why am I writing this? Who knows ? I suppose I want to try and stop Veterans committing suicide and realise they have families that love them and care about them. I want them to also see that their mates would want them to live life to the fullest, have families of their own and get together with their mates after they leave the military , but most of all I would like to see communities welcome our soldiers home and give them a reason to live on By offering jobs so they can support their families. I want to see our governments appreciate what they are willing to do for the freedom of our country and support them through Transitioning into commercial businesses that can give them meaningful employment , but most of all I want to see a program that prevents our veterans going into hardship and thinking their lives are meaningless when the leave the services.
