This morning proved successful with 6 nice Jacks landed, Juvenile GT’s, some good size Goldspot cod and many other species. Let’s see what we can find on our third day together.

03.01.2022 Where else would you rather be? Relaxing around palm trees and coconuts. Ice cold beers in the esky and getting the arms stretched on some monster GBR hard fighting fish. We will be ready for all our interstate travellers and welcome you with open arms book in now before it’s to late.

02.01.2022 While we were at Atherton I took the chance to go on a full day fishing charter out on the reef. So far all the land based fishing I’d done up here had been ve...ry quiet, so heading out to the reef seemed like a good option. I decided to go out with Jake from Exceed Sportfishing Port Douglas. This was the same operator Boots and I had had a good morning on the river with earlier in the trip. There were no fish for dinner out of that trip, but I’d been impressed and I was keen to go out with him again. Atherton is about 2 hours from Port Douglas where Jake operates from and a full day charter starts at 7, so it was a very early start, but Port Douglas is closer to the reef than further South, and this way I’d get more time out on the reef. The drive to the boat ramp was uneventful, and other than nearly leaving all my food and drinks for the day in the car, all went to plan. Once we were on the water we had an hour or so at cruising speed to get to our first spot on the reef. We did a mix of trolling and bait fishing shallower reefs at about 14m, to deeper reefs at 40m. The fishing was everything I’d been hoping for including a 1.2m Spanish Mackrel, a Giant Trevaly and a good size Coral Trout, along with a mix of other smaller fish. At one of the spots we were getting good bites at 40m, but there was a shark that could be seen on the sounder looking for an easy meal. One of the guys got an enormous Red Emperor up, but after we lost a couple of fish to the shark we moved on. Other than the fishing, highlights for the day included seeing a Turtle, a flying fish, and a perfect Nautilus shell. Spending the day on the water in this magical area, and watching a dolphin playing in the pressure wave at the front of a cargo ship crossing our path. By the time I got back to Atherton I was shattered but it was a great day and we’ll worth it.
