17.01.2022 HOW HARD CAN YOU SWING THE PENDULUM? When you do the work, you want to see the results. However what we see is that people are willing to work hard in regards to the stimulus part but will not put the same amount of energy and time into the recovery part and this is where all the growth (or loss) occurs. The harder we swing the pendulum one way, we need to have an equal swing back the other way, stimulate then recover.... The amount of stimulation we can put onto the body will be directly dictated by our bodies capacity to recover from the overall stress, lifestyle, sleep, nutrition, mindset etc. will all dictate how hard we can push the body. Unless you have an injury to the area, this will more than likely be caused due to muscle imbalance in the muscles that provide support and stability of the lumbar spine/hips etc. An understanding is needed that the muscles of the body have both an action and a function.... Functional training is just an extension of the body’s ability to move. Both the action and function of the muscles need to be in working order to keep the body pain and free and able to perform at its optimal.

13.01.2022 DEADBUGS One of the major concerns with core work we see in the gym is the lack of work done on the function of the core which is to provide stability for the pelvis and resist lumbar extension. The Deadbug is a perfect entry level exercise to work on these areas while also creating awareness as to what it feels like to be stable through these specific areas. 12.01.2022 Nutrition can be quite a controversial topic and we recognise that weight loss seems to be right smack bang in the middle of what we focus on. The problem with this, is that weight loss is never the sole outcome. Feeling better, increase in strength, increase in muscle mass, being able to run around with the kids etc. usually coincide with our weight loss goal. This is exactly the basis of our hierarchy of nutrition (pictured below) as we realise that in order to achieve these outcomes we need to have an aspect of quality across the spectrum regardless of goal. Really focusing on foods that fuel and work with the individual which can be lost in translation when our sole focus is just calories in calories out.

11.01.2022 Are you always running from the past? Do you set your goals from what has happened in the past? If we truly believe our past experiences were hard and we are to set our goals from these past experiences, are we then telling ourselves that these goals will be hard, it will take sacrifice and deprivation to achieve our desired outcome.... My question to you, is setting goals from experience inspiring or limiting? On looking back at my past experience with weight loss, every time I have decided I needed to lose weight in has come from a unpleasant experience, clothes not fitting, being bullied for being fat and hating who I was, this lead to rapid weight loss through deprivation in food and over exercising and eventually I would lose the weight, only for it to come back with interest and the cycle would eventually start again. It is funny this belief has made the fitness industry billions of dollars. Now this does not just happen with weight loss, struggling financially, continually find yourself in a bad relationship, career stalled or business nose diving, you know what you desire however as soon as you achieve it for one reason or another you seem to self-sabotage it, I believe this all come about form setting goals and then trying to achieve them with limiting beliefs from past experiences. You could argue, that If you have worked hard to get what you currently have then it is justifiable that you must then work harder to get what you want. Then again you worked hard for what for what you currently have, which if you have read this far is probably what you do not want. Could it be if you set aside your limiting beliefs, set goals to inspire you, focus on the experiences that you want to have, allow yourself to be who you want to be, will have you living the life you desire. It takes work, self-discovery that is, I had to do the work, to discover who I was, what experiences that I wanted and it was on this journey that I learnt that what I had come to believe were my thoughts and my beliefs were in fact not, they were everyone else’s, unfortunately I took their self-limiting beliefs and made them my own. So. What is holding you back? Is it the fear of discovering that you have been living a life that someone else wanted for you? 08.01.2022 Have you ever noticed that when it comes to making a lifestyle transformation, society in general tends to swing the pendulum to either extreme of the spectrum, it is almost like we are scared to sit in the middle. At yet it is being able to keep the pendulum close to the center is where we achieve lifelong sustainable results, if we look at weight loss there is a lot of information out there, which makes it very confusing and it this confusion which has us swinging the pend...ulum from restrictive eating, cutting out food groups, being obsessed with what trendy diet we are following, or to the other extreme where we binge eat, over indulge and not care about what we feed our body and yet it is when we eat to our individual bodies requirements we will improve our health and achieve our desired results. Unfortunately, it is not only weight loss where this occurs, but it is also affecting everyday life, from work, sleep, stress, emotions, exercise etc, we are going from one extreme to another. Talking to and observing people you soon start to notice they tend to go from being over stressed to burn out, unfortunately these days people seem to wear stress as a badge of honor, they are always to busy, to tired, do not have time living life to the extreme, unfortunately the pendulum eventually swings the other way which can result in illness, injury, time off work and burn out, yet if we aim to keep the pendulum in the center this would lead to living a balanced life between stress and recovery, we achieve more, be more productive and stop riding an emotional roller coaster. At Excel Health and Performance we design all our individual programs with this in mind, this lead us to develop our four pillars, Physical, Mental, Emotional and spiritual pillars, it is when these pillars individually and collectively are balanced the pendulum will spend more time in the middle instead of either extreme.

Firstly, we want to observe and understand what the energy requirements for our body to function is, looking at BMR, NEAT, TFE and Exercise level. If you are struggling for energy, suffer from brain fog or cannot perform throughout the day at a high level, look at how much you are eating, you’ll probably find it’s not enough.... From there we can adjust dependant on your goal. Weight loss eat a bit less consistently. Want to gain muscle, eat more than required consistently. Get the simple stuff right first, there are no magic bullets in this world.

06.01.2022 WHY YOU MUST ARCH WHILE EXECUTING A BENCH PRESS First off, the bench press is a terribly inefficient exercise to build the chest in terms of hypertrophy due to lack of scapular motion meaning we cannot move the pecs through full ROM and apply an adequate amount of tension across the musculature. The Bench press is a great strength building movement however and building strength is about lifting weight. Utilising a well set up arch in the movement not only allows us to move a ...greater amount of load, allowing you to build strength it also improves what we call the bench-elbow relationship. This relationship is where the elbow finishes in relation to the bench at the bottom of the movement. Finish too far below= greater risk of shoulder problems We want to finish in line with the bench at a maximum. This not only allows us to lift more it also reduces the risk of injury.
