22.01.2022 Forefoot Striking Running Found to Increase Plantar Fascia Tension Force by Up to 100% Compared to Rearfoot Strike Running An excellent finite element modeling ...(FEM) study has just been published in the Journal of Biomechanics by Chen et al from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University comparing rearfoot (RF) striking running to forefoot (FF) striking running. The FEM foot model included 22 rigid-body segments, 37 degrees of freedom and 80 musculo-tendinous units. The computer model compared RF striking running to FF striking running and measured the plantar connective tissue tension forces in both types of running footstrike patterns (Chen TL, Wong DW, Wang Y, Lin J, Zhang M. Foot arch deformation and plantar fascia loading during running with rearfoot strike and forefoot strike: A dynamic finite element analysis. J Biomechanics, 83:260-272, 2019). This fascinating research determined that FF striking running loaded all the plantar connective tissues more than in RF striking running, except for the flexor hallucis brevis muscle. The peak principal maximum stress in these tissues was 0.2 - 2.0 times greater in FF striking running. Also the plantar ligaments shared a greater proportion of the increased foot arch loading in FF striking running. Tension force of the plantar fascia was generally higher in FFS for the first to fourth bands of the plantar fascia, in which the maximal force could be 18.71109.10% higher than in RF striking running. The authors quoted my Longitudinal Arch Load-Sharing System paper from a few years ago regarding the multi-layer load-bearing system of the foot arch. My paper predicted that changes in loading forces within one layer of tension load-bearing structures will affect the tension loads in the other layers of the longitudinal arch plantar tension load-bearing structures (Kirby KA: Longitudinal arch load-sharing system of the foot. Revista Espaola de Podologa, 28(2), 2017).
