21.01.2022 2020 has been an unforgettable year for all the wrong reasons. As a tour operator on Kangaroo Island, we've dealt with mass cancellations due to the bushfires and now a global pandemic. As we, and many other of our industry partners, face an ongoing battle to survive the short-to-medium term, there are ways that you can help right now and in the future. 1. Follow, like, comment and share social media posts... By engaging with posts on social media, you're helping share the content with more people - which could help link up a business with a potential future customer! 2. Book with a travel advisor (when you next decide to travel) You usually hear operators encouraging you to book directly with them, however, by choosing to book through a trusted travel advisor, you're supporting our industry partners (many of which are our close friends) and helping everyone get through these tough times. Oh - and you usually won't pay any more than you would direct. 3. Support small businesses By booking with small independent businesses, you're supporting jobs and local economies - and in some cases, contributing to conservation (for example, Exceptional Kangaroo Island supports local conservation groups BioR and Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife).

17.01.2022 This beautiful little bird is called a Southern Emu-wren, and we're so excited to have captured these shots this afternoon! This particular sub-species is only found on Kangaroo Island, with close relatives found in other coastal regions of southern Australia. How did they get their name? You might notice their tail feathers look remarkably similar to feathers of an Emu - a strong central spine and wispy laterals, hence 'Emu-wren'. ... 17.01.2022 Yesterday, Australia was named winner of Lonely Planet's Best In Travel 2021 for Community Restoration. Congratulations to our good friend Janine Duffy from Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours who was the spokesperson for the annoucement video (link here: bit.ly/CommunityRestoration). In light of this announcement, here is a message from Craig about the bushfire recovery on Kangaroo Island.

17.01.2022 During the Summer of 2019/20, Kangaroo Island suffered its worst bushfires in recorded history. On January 3, these fires reached Remarkable Rocks and burned at such high temperatures that fine layers of the granite surface flaked off close to the burned vegetation. Since then, Flinders Chase National Park has been closed.... This virtual tour, recorded on the 28th of April, offers you the first glimpse of its raw beauty in this recovering landscape. Come and see for yourself: exceptionalkangarooisland.com Authentic Kangaroo Island | South Australia | Australia.com | Australian Wildlife Journeys

16.01.2022 Great to be featured in Singapore newspaper The Straits Times, yesterday. "Surrounded by stunning coastlines, with picturesque rows of world-class vineyards, South Australia (SA) is a scenic wonder and gastronomic haven that often flies under the radar. According to Craig Wickham, owner of deluxe tour operator Exceptional Kangaroo Island, the best thing about SA is its variety of experiences its capital Adelaide is the gateway to wildlife encounters in the Flinders Ranges..., spectacular seafood at Eyre Peninsula, the wine regions, and nature reserves at Kangaroo Island. Why he thinks SA is worth visiting: SA is known for: Its tight-knit communities with good networks of friends and colleagues across the regions, so visitors are often able to get the best local recommendations for example: Make sure you go to Cactus for a coffee. Ask for Yen he makes the best lattes. SA has the best: Element of local connection. It is easy for visitors to tap into the local lifestyle, to start conversations and get a sense of our relaxed culture. Not many people know this about SA, but we: Have thousands of unique species of marine life in our waters. Our wildlife encounters are equally diverse birds, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, dolphins, sea-lions, wombats, great white sharks, dolphins and emus can all be observed in their natural habitat here. Dont leave SA without: A care package of Haighs chocolates, Kangaroo Island honey, olive oil from McLaren Vale, cheese from Alexandrina Cheeses, some beautiful wines, and a solid plan to come back and visit soon. The best way to discover SA is to: Take it in small bites. Choose three regions at the most, then come back again and again. The quintessential SA experience is all about: Awesome local food served in a spectacular outdoor setting, accompanied by wine from a vineyard youve just visited, all the while learning about the backstories of the families who live in the area youre exploring."

12.01.2022 We've got some great news to share! Flinders Chase National Park is open to the public as of tomorrow (Saturday, July 4th) Thanks to the hard work from a wide range of organisations and individuals, including National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia, Kangaroo Island Landscape Board, the Australian Defence Force (Defence Jobs Australia), SA Country Fire Service volunteers, SA State Emergency Service volunteers and many others. Given the severity of the fires, muc...h of the landscape within the park is going to take years to return to normal. As such, we are reluctant to operate the same itinerary, as much of the day will be within the burned areas. So, we'd like to introduce you to our amended Flinders Chase Focus itinerary - which we think might be even better than the original! This full day tour explores Kangaroo Islands west end, including fire ecology, a private wildlife refuge, wildlife encounters, an elegant picnic and the iconic Flinders Chase National Park. Highlights include: Exclusive access to an unburned private wildlife conservation property with Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife Seek out Kangaroo Island Kangaroos, Tammar Wallabies and a range of other iconic wildlife species Explore Flinders Chase National Park Marvel at Remarkable Rocks Cape du Couedic lighthouse Long-nosed Fur-seals at Admirals Arch Plus, enjoy our signature hospitality which features: Home-baked traditional Australian morning tea with a selection of hot beverages An elegant picnic lunch set in the bush with a choice of local wines, beer, soft drinks, and spring water Book our Flinders Chase Focus tour or learn more here: https://www.exceptionalkangarooisland.com//flinders-chase- Authentic Kangaroo Island | Australian Wildlife Journeys | South Australia | Australia.com | Australian Tourism Export Council | Ecotourism Australia

12.01.2022 Earlier this month, we were featured in the Escape.com.au magazine, alongside our mates James and Hayley Baillie, of Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island. Battling bushfires and then a global pandemic, 2020 has been a challenging year to say the least. We're so grateful for the amazing support of our family, friends and industry partners throughout the past 12 months and look forward to bouncing back strongly in 2021!

10.01.2022 Blair, Janet and Craig have been away in the Outback and meanwhile, the Exceptional Kangaroo Island team have been busy planting trees for Glossy Black-cockatoos. Awesome job! The trees are Drooping Sheoaks (Allocasuarina verticillata) and they are the sole food source for the endangered Kangaroo Island sub-species of this large and atypically quiet cockatoo.

09.01.2022 Did you catch us on Adelady on Sunday afternoon? Thanks to Hayley & Lauren for visiting, and our very own Michael (and his blue eyes ) for showing off our new e-bikes! Head to exceptionalkangarooisland.com or kangarooislandebikes.com to learn more.

09.01.2022 What a treat! In what has become an almost daily event, we have been visited by endangered Kangaroo Island Glossy Black-Cockatoos in the trees we planted as a food source for these iconic birds. 15 years ago, numbers were down around 140 individuals. Now, despite some concerns around losses in the bushfires, estimates are upwards of 350. Their atypical, passive and almost silent presence in trees adjacent to our office, offers a regular and almost meditative chance to obser...ve and share their space. 07.01.2022 We were honoured to have received a package in the mail a couple of days ago on behalf of the Kangaroo Island community - what a lovely gesture from our beautiful friends from the USA The package was sent to us by the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley, containing 'Stars of Hope'. These stars were created by Girl Scouts Troop 34 and Troop 400, Arrowhead Creative After School Program for Success, SOAR Charter Academy, Thompson Elementary School, and Mt. Vernon E...lementary School and Humane Society volunteers/staff and children who attended their Critter Camp. They were created with the intention to bring hope to the Kangaroo Island community following the devastating bushfires last summer. Who would have thought that in the same year, these lovely people are battling bushfires in their own country. Sending our best wishes to you all The Humane Society of the United States

07.01.2022 Amazing wildlife encounters are possible on tour with Exceptional Kangaroo Island. Often when we observe quietly, animals will continue to display their natural behaviour. This clip was filmed during a twilight e-bike tour - a little bit of luck, with this curious echidna walking right up to the camera!

07.01.2022 Over the past three days, Craig and Blair hosted Trevor and Carol, who were visiting from Adelaide. Having a keen interest in birds, they booked our three day private birdwatching tour, 'Wild About Birds' - but with a twist! We teamed up with our good friends David and Penny from BioR - a local not-for-profit organisation dedicated to reconstructing habitat for biodiversity. BioR undertake a range of research activities including habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring (bird... banding, pitfall traps) and providing temporary habitat for wildlife (such as installing nest boxes). One of these activities is bird banding, and it involves setting nets within the bush to catch birds and then attach a small 'band' to their legs (each with a unique number) to help study their species. The team take various measurements, such as weight, estimated age and sex. These birds are quickly released back into their natural habitat. Trevor and Carol (and equally Craig and Blair) had a wonderful time getting up close to these beautiful birds and learning about the inspiring conservation work being done by the BioR team. Learn more about bird banding here: youtu.be/gSK16rF_YV0 Interested in participating? 05.01.2022 Everyone was out enjoying the beautiful sunny winter weather on Authentic Kangaroo Island this weekend

04.01.2022 Were extremely proud to share the news that today, September 1, marks 30 years since Craig and Janet Wickham took over the reins of Adventure Charters of Kangaroo Island, which is now known as Exceptional Kangaroo Island. To be clear, March 1, 2021, will mark 35 years since this business was established by Cate and Peter Telfer in 1986. Tragically, Peter died in March 1990, and later that year, Cate sold the business to Craig. Craig and Peter had been mates for years, so it ...was fitting that he would continue Peters legacy. 30 years on and we continue to showcase the best of Kangaroo Island to guests from all parts of the world, often hosted or organised by some of the best people in the business who have been with us for so many years. Not all of them are on Facebook and sadly not all of them are still with us (Vale Neil Sheppard) but here is the team starting with the stalwarts: Tim Williams (27 years), Ron Swan (22), Jamie Christophers (21), Carina Willson (14 - thanks Sis!), Chan our Chef (10), Jamie Bowden (9), Trevor Hammond (7), Dave Foreman (6), Tim Wendt (5), Steve Farnden (4), Kathy Woolard (4), Bill Jenner (3), Lee Berryman (2), Michael Caspar (2), Nigel Jefford (1) Rob Ellis (1) and Judith Wingate (1). Oh and Janet, Blair, occasionally Skye, and Craig. Who would have thought that the 30th celebrations would be during such uncertain times? A big thank you to everyone who has joined us on the ride so far. Heres to better times ahead, and another 30 years!
