Its sweet, musky scent gets especially strong in the evening. If you are needing a garden make over and would like to have some jasmine in the garden .. call us for an appointment. 24.01.2022 Summertime tip ..... On non-gardening days head out to the shed and construct a couple of shade cloth tents. They dont have to elaborate, just a simple, moveable structure that you can pop over the top of some of the sun sensitive veggies (like eggplant, capsicum and others) as the heat becomes more intense. ... Think of it as slip, slop, slap for plants! Pop these around where required, especially on high UV days, windy days, and during your holidays.

24.01.2022 SCENTED GERANIUMS While they may not bloom as often as their cousin, geranium, their undeniable scent makes them one of the best plants for your aromatic garden. You can choose from a variety of scents - they vary from apple, to apricot, cinnamon, ginger, lemon, nutmeg, orange, strawberry, rose and peppermint. ... They are best placed along hedging, borders or in a spot you enjoy spending most time in. Tip: The leaves of this plant need to be touched or brushed in order to release their divine smell.

23.01.2022 Water smarter at this time of year. Water first thing in the morning, and instead of quick sprinkle, a nice deep drink a couple of times a week is far more beneficial!

22.01.2022 GARDEN DESIGNFEST ..... This is the time of year to see Mt Macedon gardens in all of their glory and to get some great ideas for your own...... as an example ....... Melrose is a circa 1860s bluestone cottage. When acquired in 2005 by the current owner it had been derelict for some time. The garden comprised an original rose bed at the entrance, some shrubs on one side, a pear tree, an ornamental plum tree and a horse paddock! The garden was developed gradually as building works and pool construction permitted, with the final areas landscaped and planted during the course of 2011. Accordingly, much of the development of the garden took place during years of drought, and then during extreme wet. This influenced the design, with a view to creating an environment that would provide sanctuary and protection from the harsh climatic conditions and, by necessity, working with robust plantings. The garden has been designed with a mix of elements with some formality and symmetry, some romance and wildness, a mingling of ornamentals and productive plants and the use of local recycled materials and artefacts from overseas. A courtyard around the living and dining areas was designed to provide shade from the western and northern sun in summer, and light in winter. Grape vines are trained along a pergola that stretches across the courtyard so that there is a canopy of leaves (and grapes) in summer, allowing the doors of the house to be left open for breezes and fresh air. Fragrance comes from the Chinese jasmine and citrus flowers. The design is Mediterranean with iron windows from Turkey, a Tuscan gravel surface and pots of citrus. A fish pond sits in the centre and helps create a feeling of coolness during summer. OPEN 19th and 20th NOVEMBER Further information for this weekends open gardens is located on this website: http://gardendesignfest.com.au/ http://gardendesignfest.com.au/ga/deborah-hambleton-garden/

21.01.2022 Indoor plants whilst on holidays .... Hot summer days and a shut-up home increase the interior humidity of your house, which most houseplants like, though they are still at risk of drying out. To guarantee their happy survival, place them in the bath on some old towels (dont substitute newspapers for the towels unless you want to be reading them for years to come: newsprint will transfer on to the enameled surface.) ... Plug the tub and add enough water just to wet the towels. This treatment is great for ferns, palms, orchids and lilies. Its not so good for succulents, which like to be dry, and African violets, which dislike humidity, so place them in a saucer of water instead.

21.01.2022 Gymea lily If you want to make a statement in your garden, plant a gymea lily. The rosette of large green sword-shaped leaves looks spectacular all year round, but when it flowers and sends up a 6m stem topped with a deep-red bloom, it really shines. ... Native to Australia, its incredibly hardy but will benefit from watering in the early stages. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. . *image and information from Better Homes and Gardens.

18.01.2022 Words or pictures have never fully encompassed the sheer beauty and grandeur of the red rose. The red rose is undeniably the most beautiful among all the roses, full blooded and rich. The incredibly beautiful Cleopatra used the red rose to carpet her bedroom when she received Antony. All roses convey warmth, affection and love in varying degrees. But the red rose, being the queen of roses, is the most popular and beloved of all. The most obvious and well known meaning of the... red rose is deep love and affection. In the 18th century, a special rose language evolved as a means of communication between lovers who were forced by society to keep their feelings a secret. And the red rose came to symbolize true love that would stand the test of time. Staunchly promising affection that is forever riding high is what the red rose means. The red rose denotes a true love that is stronger than thorns and can outlive all obstacles. Desire is another facet of the red rose. The red rose expresses the throbbing heat of new love, a passionate expression of attraction. Red is the color of consummation, of raging desires and craving passion. The meaning of the red rose then is quite apparent from its color itself. Red rose speaks of love that awaits a passionate expression. Red roses are the most popular valentine roses, which is why their prices shoot up during February. The red rose, especially, a single red rose simply expresses, "I love you very deeply". Bright red roses are interpreted as the ultimate expression of romantic and abiding love. Their bright red shade expresses these emotions perfectly. The RED ROSE is also the flower of the day for the Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington. Each major race day throughout the Spring Racing Carnival has a flower dedicated to the day. Keep this in mind for the 2017 Spring Racing Carnival to avoid a floral faux pas by wearing the right flower on the day! The Emirates Stakes Day is the traditional family day on the final Saturday of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Enjoy the day, no matter what you are doing, maybe pottering in the garden or enjoying the day at the races ~ enjoy!

18.01.2022 Delicate herbs will go to seed over summer if they do not receive adequate moisture. Pay particular attention to plants like coriander, for example, and choose the Cilantro for leaf variety for maximum leaves and minimum seeds. Water in the early morning for better results.

17.01.2022 We have noticed a few gardens that have aphids ...... if you want to get rid of them without causing any harm, try the following method. Soap and Water.... The basic nature of mild household detergents makes them perfect for getting rid of mild to moderate aphid infestations. Dilute a few tablespoons of dish soap in a small bucket of lukewarm water and use a sponge or spray bottle to apply the mixture to plants where aphids have taken hold. Upon contact, the soap will dissolve the waxy protective coating from aphids bodies, dehydrating and eventually killing the insects without harming the plant. Remember to also treat the undersides of leaves where aphid eggs and larvae may be hiding! ***It is important to note that most forms of soap will also kill beneficial insects. Use caution when applying this treatment to your plants, as killing off populations of natural predator insects such as ladybugs, hoverflies, and lacewings will leave the door wide open for new colonies of aphids to move in.***

14.01.2022 Crown Oaks Day ~ The Ultimate Style Day ~ and dont forget the Pink Rose! The Crown Oaks Day is better known as Ladies Day where the women focus on the best garment and, most importantly, the hat. This is day three of the Myer Fashions on the Field competition which is held at the east end of the front lawn. Being one of the most stylish of days, you will be amongst those who are fashion conscious and who are there to admire the glamour and array of outfits on display and t...he official flower for the event is the pink rose. AND IN YOUR GARDEN . There are roses for nearly every occasion. You can grow them as miniatures, as borders, as shrubs, as informal hedges, as climbers, along fences and swags, against walls, up pillars, over arbours. And of course you can grow roses in tubs. Roses can be purchased in two ways: in pots that can be planted out year-round; and in the cooler months you also find them in nurseries, bare-rooted. The rose is dormant, the soil is removed and the bare rose roots are packaged in sphagnum moss. To plant a bare-rooted rose soak the rose in bucket of water while you dig a broad hole. Mix the garden soil with a soil conditioner, such as compost. Sprinkle fertiliser over the base of the hole and make a small mound in the hole, with your improved soil. Spread the roots of your rose over the mound. Backfill with improved soil, leaving a saucer depression around the stem. Water in with seaweed solution, until air bubbles stop rising. Water carefully for six weeks, until your rose is established. If you are thinking about creating and establishing a Rose Garden, do give us a call. we can help plan, design and create the perfect Rose Garden for you and your home!

14.01.2022 Transferring plants or even seedlings from pots and punnets to your garden bed can be done successfully during summer with a little care. Always moisten the roots and soil completely before planting, and wait until evening to plant them. Increasing moisture and avoiding the hot parts of the day help reduce plant shock.

11.01.2022 On non-gardening days head out to the shed and construct a couple of shade cloth tents. Think of it as slip, slop, slap for plants! Pop these around where required, especially on high UV days, windy days, and during your holidays. This one is a good idea for the lettuce as well ... Simply placing a sheet of vinyl privacy lattice over each bed provides the shade to keep the lettuce cool under the hot rays of the sun. The lattice provides dappled sunlight, while the white colo...r reflects the heat away from the plants. It still allows watering by sprinklers, without removing the panel. Simply pound a stake into the center of the bed to keep the lattice from sagging too much, and put screw hooks into the end posts to prevent it from sliding off, yet allows the panel to slip off for planting and harvesting.

10.01.2022 The Cornflower Cup week begins with AAMI Victoria Derby Day, the day for classic elegance, which sets the pace for the entire week. Traditionally, a black and white colour scheme for women has been the prominent palette, while men often chose to wear a grey morning suit, peacock vest and pin-stripe pants. As the curtain raiser of this unrivalled week, AAMI Victoria Derby Day is abuzz with anticipation for what Flemington has in store for the week ahead. The official flower fo...r AAMI Victoria Derby Day is the cornflower and can be purchased from flower sellers near the entrances, upon arrival to Flemington. One of the biggest accessories on race day will be the Flower of the Day. Many will build their outfit around it and guys often select matching or complimentary ties and shirts to sit alongside their buttonholes. Taking centre stage this year are stunning floral live head pieces in place of hats and fascinators. This trend does not look like fading any time soon. Florists are well skilled to construct everything from hair accessories to wrist corsages. All you have to do is ask! https://www.flemington.com.au//201/aami-victoria-derby-day Cornflower Facts: Cornflowers are known by many names, including most commonly: bachelors buttons, basket flowers or blue-bottles. Their flowers come in a variety of colors, but the most familiar (and perhaps that most arresting) is the original brilliant blue variety. Cornflowers originated from a European wildflower and has been used over the centuries as a domesticated flower for decorative purposes and even medicinal uses. Cornflowers make a beautiful addition to the modern garden. They can be used in combination with poppies, daisies and other scrubby-growing plants to create a wild-looking mix for areas that will get little tending. Their long slender stems and foliage make them a good cut flower.

08.01.2022 Summer garden checklist Even if you have chosen low maintenance plants and turf it is a good idea to tend to them on a regular basis to check for problems such as dry spots or insect infestations. Keep the following points in mind during the summer months can help to give your garden the best chance of staying picture perfect through to autumn: Mow the lawn regularly to help reduce weeds and prevent the grass from creeping into plant beds.... Aerate your lawn to help circulate water and air throughout the soil. Keep your lawn and garden beds free of weeds and pests that can zap nutrients and cause disease. Cover more delicate plants with a portable sun umbrella or shade canopy to protect them from the strong afternoon sun. Check on any water restrictions in your area that prevent watering during certain times of day and only water when your garden is looking like it needs a drink. Having a lush, colourful garden during the harsh Australian summer doesnt have to be difficult. With proper planning and lots of TLC, your summer garden can be the envy of the neighbourhood.

06.01.2022 Succulents are robust plants with fleshy leaves and stems and are the ultimate low maintenance plant. Depending on the variety they can have silver, purple or red foliage as well as every shade of green imaginable. Succulents need lots of sunlight, so if indoors, place them in a window. 05.01.2022 Poinsettias potted Christmas decoration The fiery red flowers of the poinsettia have long been popular as a decorative plant for the festive period due to their long lasting qualities as a potted plant. Poinsettias originate from Mexico and can grow into a large shrub to small tree in the garden. However, the original wild types have been refined by plant breeders, resulting in a multitude of named varieties that give superior performance as potted plants. In order to get m...aximum value from your potted poinsettia try and give it a position that receives at least six hours of indirect sunlight each day and is away from cold or hot draughts and has a temperature ideally between 20 and 25 C. Only water the plant when the soil feels dry to the touch, do not allow the plant to sit in standing water and avoid fertilising the plant while it is in bloom. When purchasing a poinsettia look for one that has fully expanded and thoroughly coloured bracts (bracts are the coloured portions of the plant, while the actual flowers are the yellow centres). Also look for dense foliage that extends as far as possible to the soil line while the plant should have a balanced appearance from all angles. It is possible to reflower your poinsettia should you become attached to it. After Christmas cut the plant back fairly hard to a height of about 20cm. Give it a handful of a complete slow release fertiliser and put it in a position where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct or indirect sunlight a day. As it starts to produce new shoots it can be moved into a larger pot or planted into the garden. Poinsettias flower naturally in winter in response to lengthening nights so expect it to rebloom around June. Professional growers coax poinsettias to flower at Christmas by creating artificial long nights in their greenhouses. and .. did you know that the lovely poinsettia is the official birthday flower of December? Poinsettias are also called Christmas flowers and traditionally symbolize celebration, success, reassurance and good cheer. Also known as the Mexican flame leaf, Christmas star, or lobster flower, the poinsettia is famous for its brilliant red flowers that make them a natural for holiday decorating. Actually, red poinsettia flowers arent flowers at all. They are large bunches of colored leaves at the top of the plant, called bracts. There are tiny flowers in the middle of the bracts, but they are very small and usually green or yellow. Although red is the most common color of poinsettia, you can also find varieties with cream, yellow, peach, pink, and white and gold-splashed bracts.

04.01.2022 Before you leave on holidays ..... Before you leave allocate a day or two in the garden to tidy things up. Stake tomatoes and dahlias, weed beds, trim the hedges lightly, remove finished flowers from annuals and water the garden with a wetting agent to ensure any rain that falls while you are away actually soaks in. Ensure the entire garden is mulched. If you need to renew the mulch, ideally choose a spare half hour after a good soak of rain or a really deep water. We like to... soak sugarcane mulch in water before using it to boost its moisture-retentive qualities. Spread it out 5-10cm thick, keeping it away from the stems and trunks of every plant to so it doesnt encourage collar rot. This mulch layer will keep the roots cool and moist and reduce evaporation from the soil. It will also help deter weeds from seeding through the garden. Dont plant anything before you head off. If you missed spring planting, any new plants can wait in their pots for autumn. Hanging baskets and pots Hanging baskets are the first things to dry out. Pierce one or two holes in a plastic drink bottle, fill it with water, then upend it in the hanging basket. It will drip water slowly into the root system of your plant and should keep it going for a week or two. Saucers really help pots survive a holiday. Give the pots a big water before you leave and ensure the saucer is full. Dont forget to remove the saucers when you return as most plants dislike a continually moist root zone. All potted plants in your garden should be moved to the cool, south side of your house, or into a shady corner or under a tree. This will make it easier for a friend or neighbour to water them will help prevent them drying out in the wind and sun. Take care though, not to plunge a sun-loving potted plant into deep shade find a dappled area instead. Hope the above is helpful and that you enjoy your holidays without too much worry about the garden!

04.01.2022 January Birth Flower The January birth flower is the Carnation. The carnation, also known by the nickname carn, has been cultivated for centuries for its ruffled blooms, favoured for its fragrance and hardiness.... The scientific name Dianthus caryophyllus contains the Greek word dianthus which means flower of the gods, and the original pink blooms of the flower led to its common name which is said to mean flesh toned. Others believe carnation gets its name from the word coronation or the Greek word for flower garlands which is corone. This Eurasian plant has a spice scent, and is also called the Clove Pink or Gillyflower, and can be found in numerous colours ranging from pink to purple-red and are said the symbolize love, fascination and distinction. As legend has it, pink carnations were said to have appeared below the Virgin Marys tears as Jesus carried the cross and as a result, the pink variety symbolizes a mothers love. This connection between the carnation and Mary was immortalized in the 1475 painting The Madonna with the Carnation by Leonardo da Vinci. It is housed in Munich, Germany as part of a collection of famous works and is also called the Munich Madonna. Carnations carried the meanings of love, fascination and distinction. Other meanings attached to carnation colours include passionate love (red), rejection or distain (yellow), innocence and steadfastness (white) and whimsical and capricious (purple). They have also been traditionally given to honour a first wedding anniversary. The carnation is the national flower of Spain where they are called clavel, a word closely related to clove which describes the fragrance from the flower. As carnations are considered an edible flower, petals are a popular choice for cake decorators and have also been used in the making of the French liquor Chartreuse since the 17th century. They have also been used to decorate ice cubes and to bring flavour to certain types of salads. So if your birthday is in January, we wish you a wonderful carnation filled day!!

01.01.2022 Summertime gardening when going on holidays! If you havent already done it, make sure you mulch the garden. Mulch has quickly become an essential for all gardens because of its moisture retaining ability. Mulching conserves moisture, so it reduces the need for frequent watering. In addition it also helps to suppress weeds, stabilise soil temperature and protects from soil erosion.... There are many different types of mulch on the market at the moment. These range from inorganic mulches such as carpet, glass and rubber, to the organic forms like pine bark, wood chips and pea straw. We suggest you put down a thick layer of mulch, at least 75mm, to minimise water evaporation and maximise absorption. Mulch also helps protect the soil from erosion, moderates the soil temperature, and makes the garden look neat and tidy. Mulching has some disadvantages as well. It can smother your plants, tie up nutrients, add unwanted chemicals, grow fungus, and slow water penetration. The most important point to understand is there is no one method that fits all gardens. Each type of mulch has pros and cons, making it suitable for some situations and not others. Regardless of which method you choose, you should still mulch. But if you need help with your garden, call us today. 0408 743 477
