22.01.2022 Tomorrow marks the spring equinox ! The word 'equinox' comes from Latin and means 'equal night', referring to the roughly 12-hour day and 12-hour night. The...y occur twice a yeararound late March (the autumn equinox) and late September (the spring equinox). Have you heard of the equilux? Whilst the equinox is indeed September 22nd, in fact 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night actually occurred on September 19th (sunrise at 6.14am and sunset at 6.14pm in Melbourne). The 19th of September is therefore known as the Equilux! Equilux means 'equal light'. The atmosphere actually bends the sun's rays around so that we see it for a short while after it sets and before it rises. The Equinox doesn't take into account this bending by the atmosphere. Interestingly, the date of the equilux varies depending on latitude. This is because at higher latitudes, the sun sinks on a small angle relative to the horizon and therefore takes longer to drop far enough below the horizon for its light to stop being seen than at lower altitudes.
