25.01.2022 Been a fun and productive few days fishing the seemingly endless flats of the Gulf. Summer is well and truly underway, most days hitting 40C, the water sometimes too warm for fish. It's been a while since the tuna have made any real appearance, we did however manage to find a few flighty schools. Dan is armed with a quick and long cast so he took advantage of that and loved pelting a surf candy at the speeding fish.

24.01.2022 Just wanted to say a big shout out and thanks to Bravo Marine in Perth for looking after my boat so nicely. She’s had a full refit and is ready for another 10 years service. New Suzuki 140 engine, upgraded steering, detail clean and polish inside and out. It’s drives snd rides like a brand new boat. The guys were super easy to deal with and gave great advice and service. ... Next are some new stickers ..

21.01.2022 Will had come to Exmouth with a list of wants, top of that list was a GT. Luckily the guy can cast well and it only took one good chance for him to present the fly in the right place. Nice fish Will, glad to help you make dreams come true ..

21.01.2022 The mixed and varied species on offer in Exmouth is the major drawcard for most anglers who come to fish here. Being able to target inshore and offshore fish on the same day or on alternate days makes for some very enjoyable and interesting fishing. If anglers want to narrow their sights on specific species, that's fine too - here's a few from the past days with Heath and Will.

20.01.2022 Cathie and Roger Bassett are back in Exmouth (again), enjoying the warm weather and clear water on the flats. It's a new species kind of day for Cathie with this tricky bluebone that she coaxed with a crab fly

20.01.2022 Last day with Heath and Will from the US, we went to the islands to look for milkfish but didn't see any, then headed out again to see if we could get Will a marlin. Glam conditions, clear blue water and heaps of fly fish about. We raised 2 blacks, one was when Heath was on strike, the fish ate the fly perfectly after being teased in, but it didn't stick. Will had a black up and a sail late in the day, the sail ate but again it didn't stay in. Tally for the 2 days bluewater f...ly fishing was 4 black marlin and a sail raised raised, two blacks hooked and one landed. Here's a clip of Heath hanging on to his jumping black marlin on fly yesterday.

19.01.2022 My French client Edouard with his first Western Australian permit, caught in the prisine shallows of the Ningaloo reef. We stalked a couple of tailing fish and this was the result - amazing!

18.01.2022 Queens are a plenty out here, they're great for filling the gaps between other fish. Gosh that sounds terrible that they're almost fodder rather than a target - a sure sign of an amazing fishery. Here's the queen of the flats with 'another' jumping queenie.

17.01.2022 Headed out today to check out the condition of the flats and the clarity of the water after the low pressure system that passed us this week and dumped three days of rain on us. I came across a flat that was full of tailing golden trevally, after landing three fish I headed home and left them feeding. Donkeys like this are hard work!

15.01.2022 Super amazing day for Dan who reckons 'one of the best day's fishing of my life' After seeing numerous GTs and permit, he wanted one of either. To get them both on the same day and then throw in a big popper-slurping golden in the mix, just makes it all that much sweeter. A truly world class day of fishing, and well deserved too. Dan works hard at his casting and spotting fish, it's a pleasure to have someone with skills on the boat who's adapting fast, and the results show it.

14.01.2022 A few highlights from Edouard and Phillipe's trip. It's been great having the guys out again, I think my French is improving !

14.01.2022 Nothing better than sitting back and watching this unfold on the front deck of my boat. Happy angler, happy guide, gorgeous weather, crystal clear water and backing zipping out the rod. Alan McCarthy in his element.

12.01.2022 Heath is on a roll, he's landed multiple large trevally, a permit wading the other day, tuna, cobia, queenies ... and today did his first day of bluewater fly fishing for marlin. We raised 2, one ate the fly, the other had the fly stolen by a small yellowfin tuna. Well done to Heath on landing his first marlin on fly, and to Will for providing sashimi and fresh fish.... What a week of varied species the guys have had.

11.01.2022 This is the Shire to the south of Exmouth taking the initiative to implement halving the recreational fish possession limits from 20kg to 10kg. I welcome such an initiative and would like to see the same measures put in place here. Currently a family of four can come to Exmouth and leave with 80kg of fillets. That’s nothing short of raping and pillaging if you ask me. ... Let’s hope our forward thinking councilors and Shire move ahead to make this change.

10.01.2022 That moment of truth ... the perfect cast, incoming GT, a flurry of whitewater, only to be left with the empty humbling feeling of refusal when the large dark shape slowly makes its way off the flat. We'll get you one next time Alan McCarthy

10.01.2022 After an amazing months holiday with the family, it's nice to be back on the water doing what I love. 'Reel Fly' has had a full makeover, she's been refit with a sparkly new 140 Suzuki engine, new Seastar hydraulic steering, gauges, electrics, controls, full detail inside and out, she drives and looks brand new. My first two guests have flown in from the States and have got straight into it. Heath and Will have had a fantastic few days of sight casting, with multiple double hookups on good goldens and some fantastic surface popper action too.

09.01.2022 Permit release for Heath, check out the clarity of the water. One would be mistaken for thinking this was the Seychelles rather than Exmouth in Western Australia

09.01.2022 A warm welcome to Jerry from Texas and Dan from South African, both who have just flown in from 2 weeks in the snow in Tasmania where they've been at the world fly fishing championships. Dan's off to a good start, the guys enjoyed the challenge of sight casting to trophy fish on the flats. I think Daniel has let the GT's get under his skin a little ...

09.01.2022 While on holidays with the family in South Africa, I get reminded of great days like these from 4 years back. Looking forward to getting home and getting anglers into fish

07.01.2022 Heath from North Carolina proving that an awesome cast comes in very handy when targeting indo pacific permit. Getting one while wading is worth at least two from the boat. Well done on your 16th permit and first indo-pac.

06.01.2022 At last, restrictions have eased enough to allow travel within WA

06.01.2022 Feisty mangrove jacks have been providing endless fun for Roger. It's ridiculous how much of a 'big fish' attitude these fish have

05.01.2022 Live chat about fishing and life in Australia at 6pm today Wednesday 29 April with Dewald Kirsten in South Africa. 2 pm in SA

04.01.2022 What a roller coaster ride the past couple of weeks has been for everyone, here's something to distract us back to normal life for a bit. Repeat guest Michael was here for 2 weeks, arriving 3 days before the mandatory quarantine rule was implemented and leaving 4 days before Qantas stops flying overseas. Talk about running the gauntlet. Here's a snapshot of his trip and a few of the memorable captures.

03.01.2022 The ever faithful golden trevally, guaranteed to eat almost anything you put in front of them (well in Exmouth anyway). By far the most prevalent of the trevally species we have here and they can be found in every corner of our fishery, from the Ningaloo reef as pictured, to the other side of the Gulf, or in schools around the shoals. This was Alan's last fish before the weather closed in, not to worry he has a couple days up his sleeve for the return trip with his son in the coming months.

02.01.2022 Another day of cruising the flats and sight casting to big fish in shallow water. Dan Factor enjoyed having a tussle with this stonking golden that was part of a school of fish this size, moving across the flats
