24.01.2022 We’re continuing our focus on skin issues by looking at some of the treatment options for pets with sensitive skin. Remember, if your pet shows signs of skin irritation always discuss symptoms with one of our friendly vets before deciding on a treatment plan. Medication - If you notice any skin irritation in your pet, always discuss it with your vet. They will be able to help you identify the source of the problem and may recommend suitable medication to treat the issue. ... Shampoo - Medicated or non-medicated shampoos can help soothe itchy skin, as well as treat pyoderma and parasitic infections. Never use human shampoo on your pet. Supplements - Some skin conditions may benefit from dietary/vitamin supplements. Work with your vet to find the suitable supplement and dosage. Food - A prescription diet may be recommended to help soothe and strengthen your pet’s skin. For dogs, we recommend Hill’s Prescription Diet Derm Defense. For cats, Hill’s Prescription Diet d/d. Topicals - Certain ointments, creams and sprays may help combat infection, itch, inflammation and parasites. Ask your vet about suitable topical treatments for your pet. See more

07.01.2022 Just like us, our pets are surrounded by environmental irritants each and every day. Fleas, pollen and even the dust in our homes can cause a skin condition in some dogs that may lead to scratching, sometimes excessively. This is unpleasant for your pet and can also be difficult for everyone else in the family. The good news is most dogs with these skin conditions can benefit simply from the right food. We recommend Hill’s Prescription Diet: Derm Defense to strengthen your do...g’s skin barrier and drive healthy skin from within. Helps strengthen skin barrier Drives healthy skin from within Formulated to help soothe and nourish skin & coat Helps skin to recover naturally Holistic long-term solution supporting a healthy immune system Speak to one of our vets to learn more about how the right diet can benefit your dog if they have sensitive skin.

05.01.2022 DOG DISEASE ALERT The Department of Primary Industries and local vets on the ground have been monitoring and undertaking disease surveillance of the emerging disease Ehrlichia in dogs since towards the beginning of the year. Through prompt recognition of this disease by vets in the Northern Territory and Kimberley region, we have been on the forefront of monitoring the spread of this disease which has unfortunately travelled faster and further than originally expec...ted. The disease has now been confirmed in most of the northern regions, including the bordering Pilbara and Gascoyne. There has been very detailed information on the emerging nature of this disease available through all local vet clinics in Northern Western Australia and the DPI websites for over 6 months now. As it stands there has been one confirmed case of Ehrlichia in a dog travelling through Exmouth and one confirmed case of a local dog with Anaplasmosis (an endemic disease to northern Australia). Please note, this is not a new type of tick, but a previously exotic tick born disease that is now being spread through the common Brown Dog Tick. Signs to look out for in your dog include: Fever Lethargy Inappetence Weight loss Possible bleeding If you are concerned about your dog, please contact your closest vet clinic where the appropriate testing will be performed. The best way to break this cycle of infection is appropriate tick control, so please contact your vet regarding the most appropriate tick control for your dog. Whilst this will not completely stop the risk of infection (as the tick preventions still require the tick to bite and feed) it will help to significantly reduce the risk to the overall population. As per previous tick born disease, Ehrlichia also poses a zoonotic potential so please ensure to perform thorough tick searches on your dogs and yourselves especially after bush walking or similar activities that increase the risk of ticks bites, and contact your doctor if you are concerned. Again, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Exmouth Vet Clinic on 9949 2499.

03.01.2022 We understand how important it is for our pets to have healthy skin and fur, so this month we’ll be focusing on skin conditions, their symptoms, causes and treatments. The condition of your pet’s skin and fur can be a good measure of their overall health, and may even indicate underlying illnesses that are causing ongoing discomfort. If you notice any signs of skin irritation in your pet, always book a consultation with one of our friendly vets. They will able to help determi...ne the cause of your pet’s condition and can recommend the most suitable treatment and diet. Let's get started with the symptoms and causes of skin irritation in pets: Symptoms to look out for: Chewing/licking Discolouration Scratching/rubbing Sores/discharge Dry, flaky skin Hair loss Matted hair Bumps/rashes Red skin/ears Scooting Head shaking Odour Common causes of skin irritation: Environmental Allergies - Pollen, household dust, mould and plants can cause an allergic reaction in pets. Hormonal Imbalances - If your pet’s endocrine system generates a level of hormones that’s too high or low a range of skin problems can occur. Skin Infections - Cuts and scrapes, as well as floppy ears and skin folds that are difficult to clean, can put your pet at risk for bacterial infections. Food Intolerances - Pets can have an allergic reaction to certain food ingredients. This may occur the first time your pet is exposed to an ingredient or could develop over time. Parasites - Fleas, lice and mites can all cause skin irritation. Not only do parasites carry disease, they can have an unhealthy effect on your pet’s skin, and can eventually cause tissue damage.
