24.01.2022 We all live in them and many times take them for granted; these are our local communities. They are our support systems, built by the people we depend on and turn to for advice, a listening ear or a sounding board. But what happens if you are an expat and you have moved away from your community; how important is it to become part of a new community as soon as possible?

23.01.2022 In a disappointing case of déjà vu, the Australian government has re-introduced legislation into parliament seeking to abolish the main residence capital gains tax (CGT) exemption for properties sold by non-resident Australian expats. The legislation has already had been passed in the House of Representatives and was put to the Senate on 27th Nov 2019, where it was read for the first time, meaning that it will likely result in the death knell of the Main Residence exemption ...for non-resident Australian expats very, very soon. 17.01.2022 One of the best things about being an expat is the freedom to pursue the life you want beyond the borders of your homeland. That freedom is also one of the big attractions of investing in cryptocurrencies, which are free from the traditional strictures for national currencies like the Australian dollar, US dollar and the British pound. But as tax season approaches, the Australian Tax Office is sounding warnings over how crypto investment is reported. And its also putting investors on notice about a potential AUD$770 million hole in its collection numbers, signalling a crackdown on tax avoidance.

13.01.2022 If you are an Australian expat in the U.S., it is vital that you understand how your U.S. expat tax return will be affected by living abroad. Although we don't currently prepare US tax returns on behalf of our Australian clients living and working in USA, we've compiled a list of some of the frequently asked questions that come across our desks - so take a look at our US tax FAQ for Australian expats below:

12.01.2022 Our politicians wonder why Australian's leave our shores seeking out opportunities overseas. We hear media reports about Australia's brain drain caused by talent moving overseas. But with such a heavy-handed tax system that penalised Australian's seeking to get ahead, and with no genuine tax reform likely to occur anytime soon, is it any wonder that Australians are leaving the country in droves. Most Aussie expats have moved overseas seeking challenges and opportunities to better their lives and that of their family by creating some wealth, in jurisdictions where hard work and effort is rewarded and where taxes are moderate but fair! Unless genuine tax reform occurs soon, Australia's brain drain will continue to increase along with all the tax revenue that goes along with that. https://www.afr.com//tax-slug-on-income-and-profits-second

10.01.2022 If you're an Australian expat who owns a home in Australia that was your main residence you cannot afford to ignore this as an inadvertent mistake could be extraordinarily costly! Today sees the death of the main residence CGT exemption for non-resident Australian expats. We've warned Australian expats for over 2.5 years about these changes and so we're gutted that these poorly considered rules are now reality. Unfortunately some two and a half years after first being propose...d in the May 2017 Federal Budget today the Australian government passed a Bill that scraps the main residence exemption for Australian expats who sell their former homes in Australia whilst they are a non-resident. Despite intense lobbying from us here from the majority of the Australian tax and accounting industry including us here at ETS, these flawed measures were passed into law today. Disappointingly that occurred, without even so much of a peep (from either party), with Parliament ignoring calls for the legislation to be amended to eliminate the punitive, inconsistent and inequitable outcomes that Australian expats will suffer as a result of this heavy-handed legislation.
