23.01.2022 Penny Farthings If you have been to York you have likely stopped into Penny Farthings Lolly Shop on the main street. The shop itself was established in 2006 when owners, Linda and Gary Shardlow moved to York from Mandurah.... The shop itself might not be old but it sure is full of history. Gary was born on Rottnest Island. His father was a carpenter there at the time. Gary had a fantastic life on Rotto, with most everyday being spent working on bikes for everyone to use. Gary and Linda continued to love and collect bikes throughout their relationship, with their tandem wedding bike being on display in the shop (with their wedding photo beside it) Penny Farthings also has an original Penny Farthing Bike dated back to 1873. Now you can buy these adorable mini Penny Farthing York bikes in the shop to take home with you. Next time you are in the shop have a look at all the photos, they all have so much history and meaning to the owners. 22.01.2022 What a year 2020 has been - unlike any other! Some of us have been separated from our families, others have felt safest only whilst at home. It has been a year for change, for transition, and for development. This year, York has been overwhelmed with love and kindness from both our WA community and visitors. In a typical calendar year, York is visited by approximately 45,600 visitors with approximately 40% of these international or in...terstate travellers. This year, with reduced international and interstate tourism, York still welcomed 37,728 visitors to experience its heritage charm. All visitors to our beautiful town have kept our small businesses alive and thriving. Of course, 2020 wouldn’t have been the year it has been without our devoted locals. Those who chose to shop local, stay home, and be considerate of social distancing. To all, we thank you and wish you the happiest of New Years. 17.01.2022 Standing tall along York’s main street is this beautiful federation style building which, in keeping with its retail and community history, now serves as the town’s newsagency. The Collins Building was constructed by W & H Collins in 1907 as purpose-built shops and first-floor accommodation and office space, after building a row of 5 shops in front of Settler’s House on Avon Terrace the year before. Over its history, the Collins Building has had some interes...ting tenants, with occupiers including Percy Tozer, a draper, and Haroldmos Tiliakios, a fishmonger, who operated a fish saloon in 1908 before J Farrel took its place in 1909. Haroldmos was a Greek fishmonger who called York home at the turn of the century and also served at Gallipoli during World War One. Today, as you walk along Avon Terrace and stop to buy a paper, imagine standing where Haroldmos once stood and operated his bustling store! 16.01.2022 The iconic York Mill is located at the entrance to the town, at 10 Henrietta St. Built in 1892, this historic landmark played a significant role in the development of the town, which thrived on the wheat and grain export industry. The York Mill won awards as early as its first year of production, winning awards as far afield as London and Paris. After operating for more than fifty years as a roller flour mill, production eventually ceased in 1967. After being sold at auction ...and restored as a mixed use venue, the York Mill was given a new life. 14.01.2022 Do you find yourself lost for time in York? Time seems to go slower when here. Don't fret, though. Just look to the iconic York Town Hall clock to find out what time it is. Did you know when the York Town Hall was built in 1911 It was claimed to be the largest public hall in Western Australia, with an interior floor space measuring 100 by 50 feet (30m x 15 m in today’s measurements!) During construction the last of six large steel principals in the main section of the... hall still had to be secured firmly but lunchtime came and the workmen took lunch. 09.01.2022 York Town Hall hosts first event following Regional Venue Improvement Grant The Black Swan Theatre Company came to York on 1 August to hold a free pub...lic play-reading of YORK - a new work written by Ian Michael and Chris Isaacs. The Town Hall phase 2 upgrades have recently been completed with a new sound system being installed along with electric winches and stage lighting. In addition, a number of acoustic baffles have been placed on the walls to provide sound absorption and improve sound quality. Phase 1 upgrades were completed in 2019 and included the stage being re-stumped, new stage curtains, new window drapes and painting of the interior and exterior of the building. Set in and around a single old abandoned hospital, the play YORK moves through time to uncover the buried histories we have built over. Traversing four different eras, this daring new work sheds light on how our stories are told and who tells them. The audience was entranced by the play-reading and gave the artists a standing ovation. During the interval a charming performance by the York Indigenous Youth Choir Mooditj Coolalingas was enjoyed. 04.01.2022 When visiting York it is impossible to miss Sargent's Pharmacy. The black and white building on the corner of Avon Tce and South Street. Sargent’s Pharmacy is significant for its pharmaceutical associations. The double-storey building is a unique example of Victorian and Federation architectural influences designed on a skewed corner. The Sargent family moved to York from England in 1886, at which point Mr. Sargent opened the pharmacy. ...Son, Oswald Sargent, also became a pharmacist, taking over the pharmacy in 1934, but his true love was botany. He devoted every spare minute to botanical surveys and collections. In those days, the bushland near York was a botanical paradise, and Sargent took full advantage. His special interest was native orchids, but he also discovered many new species of wildflowers, including the beautiful wattle Acacia celastrifolia. But he is most famously remembered in the name of the Salt River Gum, Eucalyptus sargentii, which he was the first to identify. With a rich history, the Sargent Pharmacy stands tall, making a considerable contribution to the historic aesthetic of York’s main street and the townscape. 02.01.2022 We know you love to take photos in front of Canola, and we thought we would share some interesting facts about these fields of gold. Canola is grown for the oil extracted from its seed, which is used in margarine, cooking and salad oils, edible oil blends. Canola belongs to the botanical family Brassicaceae, which also includes mustard, turnip, wild radish, cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli.... Canola requires more management and monitoring than cereal crops. Canola is ready to harvest when pods are dry and rattle when shaken. At this stage the pods are pale brown and the seeds are dark brown to black. Please refer to yesterday's post for information on our public canola viewing paddock. The school had many teachers over the years, the first being Mrs Johanna Whitely. ... The present schoolhouse (as photographed) was built in 1873 for the Sisters of Mercy. When they left York it was converted to provide a new home for one of the oldest public libraries in the State.
