24.01.2022 We want to know what you think of our work in the community. Thursday June 18, we will be livestreaming a Community Forum where we will share with you the proc...ess that we undertake to prepare for our Sunday ABC News national bulletin segments and Auslan Updates. We also want your feedback regarding the use of #Auslan interpreters at press conferences and in general. Tune in to be involved in the discussion from 5:30pm. Make sure you RSVP to the event here: Community Forum. See you there!

23.01.2022 With COVID-19, information in #Auslan is especially critical. We are pleased to let you know that Expression Australia and the ABC News have partnered to provid...e all Deaf Australians with access to important information during the COVID-19 crisis. Every Sunday at 6pm, the national news bulletin on ABC NEWS will be Auslan interpreted. It will also include two minutes of specific information for the Deaf community in Auslan. Please let us know what information you would like included in the Auslan segment by inbox message.

21.01.2022 Meet Shannon! Shannon is one of our Access Coordinators here at Expression Australia. Shannon has been with us for 5 and a half years. Shannon completed her Diploma of Auslan and her Diploma of interpreting in 2005. We asked Shannon what she found most rewarding about her job The variety of people that we get to meet. I love playing a part in helping someone achieve their goals. I also think it’s really important that we have an opportunity to educate the wider community ...for example working with an employer that has never hired someone with a barrier before and changing their perception. What is Shannon doing to get through lockdown? Lots and lots of kitchen experimenting! Shannon has also been fostering dogs which has made a huge difference. It’s also been so much easier during lockdown as she doesn’t need to worry about what’s happening to the house whilst she’s at the office! When lockdown is over Shannon is most looking forward to eating someone else’s food that does not come in a takeaway container! [Image Description: A snap of Shannon sitting indoors on a chair. She is looking directly up at the camera which is on an angle facing down at her. Shannon is nursing a small dog in her arms while it sleeps.]

21.01.2022 Coronavirus update 17 March 2020, 5pm. This is an Auslan only summary - key points are as below: Number of new cases Aus: on health.gov.au says 375, but probably more. Awaiting Government update. (ABC article says 449) Vic: 94 (yesterday 71) Tas: 7 same yesterday (not sure if updated?)... As we know, Victoria declared a state of emergency started yesterday 12pm, similar in Tasmania- public health emergency declared from yesterday 12pm One more school in Vic closed- Toorak Primary School after one person who had been there was found to have the virus. At this stage closed until further notice The Health Minister, Greg Hunt (in press conf at 2pm- without an interpreter) has advised that at this stage schools will not be closed. This is due to a few reasons: the pressures it may place on parents who may work in healthcare or essential services who may need to stop work to look after children; the risk it poses to the elderly if children are then sent to be with grandparents; and the relatively low infection rate and level of severity amongst younger people as seen in other countries to date. You may have seen some schools in Melbourne or the country closed. These schools have made their own decided to do this. National cabinet (state leaders and chief medical officers) meeting tonight via video link to discuss things like how to protect people in aged care and possibly changing the rules and maximum numbers of people at non-essential public gatherings. Therefore, there may be some changes to Government guidelines and recommendations tomorrow- stay informed. There has been a lot of talk in the community about how to support each other especially those who are elderly or with severe disabilities- do what you can to support each other. Businesses are trying to help like we have seen with WW and Coles early shopping hour for those people and also now Coles are trying to recruit more people to stock the shelves. They have the food and groceries, just not enough time to stock the shelves. Some people (especially casual workers) may have difficulties to pay for essentials if on sick leave. Australian Public Service employees will have casual wages covered. Please continue to stay safe, wash hands and limit contact with others to help stop the spread.

20.01.2022 This is an Auslan only summary as at 18 March - key points are below: Number of cases: 121 in Vic (27 more than yesterday), 7 in Tas (same) Health.gov.au says a...s at 6.30am on 18 March 2020, there have been 454 confirmed cases but likely more. The Victorian Government have announced $6 million to assist in supporting people who are homeless and have COVID-19 to get access to safe places to isolate and recover. There is also more supports in place for those at risk of homelessness because they are struggling to pay their rent. Reminder to everyone that there is enough food- please stop panic buying. Some supermarkets have put limits of 1 or 2 or many things, not just toilet paper- but other things like canned food, coffee. Other items like fresh fruit and vegetables or milk have no limits. From the PM briefing this morning (with interpreter- link below): Non-essential gatherings of more than 100 people inside are now banned (exceptions to this include airports, public transport, hospitals, shops, disability services, aged care). This means gatherings like weddings may not be able to go ahead if more than 100 people indoors. The limit of no more than 500 people for outside events is the same so events like going to watch AFL game or a large outdoor event can not be attended. Schools at this stage will remain open and PM said his children still going to school. Travel: The advice from Smart Traveller is DO NOT travel overseas at the moment. This is LEVEL 4 advice. The TOP (most serious) warning level- red. Lots of countries are restricting travel and will continue to change quickly. If you travel overseas and get stuck or unwell, the Australian Government may not be able to assist you. If you have a flight booked, contact the airline to get a refund or credit. If you or family members are overseas, you should try and book a flight to return to Australia now. Domestic air travel is still running. Stay Safe: Remember to keep washing your hands and avoid handshakes, hugs or close contact with other people where possible. There is a SCAM SMS about Coronavirus testing going around- it says click the link to get tested in your area. It is fake and clicking on the link could mean your personal information is stolen. The correct information is on Government websites such as https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au and health.gov.au so always check there first.

13.01.2022 Meet Mary! Mary is our Service Manager for Employment here at Expression Australia. Mary was looking for a job after completing her psychology degree at university. We asked Mary what she finds most rewarding about her job Working in a bilingual, bi-cultural workplace where I can learn and use Auslan, and be involved in the Deaf... community. Not to mention working with great people! What is Mary doing to get through lockdown? Homesteading! Lots of baking and cooking and has developed a very keen interest in fermenting. She just made some fermented hot sauce! When lockdown is over Mary is really keen to jump back into the gym and like a lot of us, excited to see her friends (hopefully at the pub!) Sarah signed up as a volunteer at Deaf Children Australia which provided her exposure to the Deaf community and opened her eyes to employment opportunities that could use her Auslan skills. We asked Sarah what she... finds most rewarding about her job To know that I have supported, empowered and played a part in positive change is the best reward What is Sarah doing to get through this Lockdown? Spending time with her dog and being crafty! Darcy doesn’t do social distancing and is stoked by the constant company and cuddles. And being creative gives me an outlet to channel any anxiety and ‘switch off’ when I’m feeling overwhelmed. When lockdown is over Sarah is headed straight to the op-shop to spend hours searching for daggy, kitsch and fabulous treasures.. but not before she gives her friends and family a very tight squeeze! [Image Description: A young woman, hugging her dog and looking slightly off camera with a warm smile. Sarah is wearing a sports jumper. 07.01.2022 This is an Auslan only summary - key points are below: As at 6:30 am on 19th March 2020 on health.gov.au, there have been 565 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Aus...tralia. VIC 149 - 28 more that yesterday. TAS - 10 - 3 more than yesterday. 6 deaths but 49 people have recovered. In Victoria the premier Dan Andrews announced that $437 million will be put towards health services like more beds in hospitals, more oxygen machines and other equipment and gloves, masks etc for healthcare workers. Also more support for people watching the spread, contacting people who are at risk and helping them self-isolate. As we explained in a previous video, Tasmania declared state of emergency earlier this week, but now have increased their border restrictions starting from Friday March 20 at midnight. This means that everyone arriving in Tasmania (even from another Australian state) must quarantine for 14 days. The only people who do not have to do this are people who work in essential services for example: health care or specialist, emergency, defence, air/ship/freight workers. We know that there been panic buying things like food and toilet paper but now there are some people doing this for medicines. It is important we do not do this. To stop people doing this and make sure this is enough for everyone, medicine restrictions have been introduced for all of Australia. Pharmacists will only provide one months worth of prescription medication and will also limit supply over the counter medications like Ventolin and paracetamol (also children’s paracetamol) to 1 unit per purchase. Advice from Smart Traveller remains the same from yesterday which is LEVEL 4. DO NOT travel overseas at the moment. If you are already travelling overseas and want to return home, do so now. Some people may be having difficulty at this time- especially those who may miss out on work because of being sick, having to self-isolate or because their job is casual. The Australian Government has announced some supports including emergency payments, faster ways to get a sickness allowance and having your job seeking requirements postponed if you are in isolation. More information on the DSS.gov website. Reminder to protect yourself and others by washing your hands and avoiding touching your face. Try to follow social distancing roles when possible. This means staying 1.5 metres away from others and no hugging or handshakes. If you suspect that you have in contact with someone who have COVID-19, please self isolate for 14 days and if symptoms develop - contact 1800 020 080 via NRS for further assistance.

06.01.2022 Meet Zoe! Zoe is the Team Leader of Employment here at Expression Australia and has been with us for 9 years. Zoe worked with us for 2 years before taking a break to Travel for a few years. She finished her diploma of Auslan in 2005, initially applying for a role at the interpreter booking office. Whilst working in this role Zoe was completing her Diploma of Interpreting and then moved into our Employment Team. We asked Zoe what she finds most rewarding about her job I lov...e the people I work with, our team at Employment and the broader organisation. Working one on one with our participants and being able to support each person to achieve their goals is something I feel really privileged in being able to provide What is Zoe doing to get through this Lockdown? A lot of walking, a little bit of roller skating, trying her hand at baking and has found her love for reading again! When lockdown is over (and it is safe to do so) Zoe is headed out for a drink with her nearest and dearest! [Image description: A head shot of Zoe from her shoulders up, smiling directly to camera. Zoe has a blunt horizontal fringe which sits just above her eyes and her hair is tucked behind her right ear]

05.01.2022 23 March 2020, 4pm. The video is an Auslan only summary - English summary below: Cases in Australia:... The ABC has updated its website at 1.30pm today and there are now more than 1,500 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia. Victoria - 355 (59 more than yesterday) Tasmania 22 (5 more than yesterday) Updates from the national cabinet meeting held last night: Australia is now at Stage (Level) 1 Shutdown started today at lunchtime- this was decided by the Prime Minister and state Government Leaders. This means that all non-essential places where people come together must close. It includes pubs, clubs, nightclubs, Crown Casino, and licensed venues in hotels and pubs. It also includes gyms, indoor sporting venues, places of worship (Churches Mosques etc), cinemas and entertainment venues. This also applies to outdoor spaces that are busy with people like the well-known Bondi Beach in NSW that was closed on the weekend. Restaurants and cafes are allowed to operate but can only provide takeaway and home delivery services. People are advised to cancel all non-essential travel and trips- even those within Australia or your state- you should cancel your school holiday plans. There are now stricter rules on visiting elderly people in nursing homes such as no recent overseas travellers, visitors of only 2 people per day and no children or young people allowed. Schools: The Victorian Premier announced yesterday that school holidays will start early so from tomorrow all schools are closed until 14th April. This means today is the last school day for term 1. For all other states, the Federal Government said the schools will remain open for rest of term. If you decide to keep your child at home, you are responsible for their care and supervision. No one should be hanging out in groups at shopping centres for example. Update from Victorian Premier: The Victorian Police have established a new Coronavirus Squad of 500 officers who will make sure people are following the rules about social distancing, self-isolation for recently returned people from overseas and others or who have been advised to self-isolate. If you are told to self-isolate you MUST NOT leave your home for any reason even for food shopping. Contact friends or family to ask them to drop off food at your doorstep or call the Coronavirus hotline via the NRS on 1800 675 398 as they can assist in delivering supplies. The hotline is often busy with long wait time, so you can also go to the website: www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au. Tasmania will follow the national Stage 1 Shutdown and unlike Victoria, at this stage schools will remain open. No further Government announcements from Tasmania. These rules for Stage (Level) 1 Shutdown may increase to Stage (Level) 2 and become more strict if we continue to see the number of people with COVID-19 increase so quickly. It is important that ALL Australians follow these rules and try to limit being out of their homes and seeing other people- this is the only way we can slow the spread of the virus.

02.01.2022 Brent Phillips, Director, Language, Partnerships and Innovation at Expression Australia will be on ABC News (channel 24) around 10:15am this morning to discuss ...our recent announcement with the ABC. It will also include two minutes of specific information for the #Deaf community in Auslan.
