17.01.2022 I know a lot of people have been waiting for this, so Ill cut to the chase. On Tuesday 26 May all Prep, Grade 1 and 2, and all VCE, VCAL and specialist schoo...l students will return to classroom learning. All other year levels will return on Tuesday 9 June. And Monday 25 May will be a pupil-free day to make sure everythings ready to go. Well still be offering on-site supervision during those two interim weeks for families who need it but by 9 June, all kids will be back to face-to-face learning in the classroom. Our Government will provide additional funding for daily cleaning and extra sanitiser and soap supplies. Well prioritise testing for any Victorian school staff members who wish to do so, including those without symptoms. And well support teachers and staff at greater risk to continue working remotely. That includes older staff or those with underlying health conditions. Schools will be taking extra precautions too such as staggered drop off and pickup times to avoid lots of parents being in the same place at the same time. While we were working so hard to flatten the curve, it was really important not to have a million kids and their parents and carers moving around the community every day. But thanks to everyones hard work, were now able to make some changes. We always said wed follow the advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer, and that our decisions would be based on evidence and they are. But its only because people stayed home and stayed apart and hundreds of thousands of Victorians got tested that we have the data to back this up and the confidence to move forward. The next couple of weeks will be crucial, and Ill keep you posted every step of the way. I know wrangling a preppy while youre trying to work from home is a challenge. That studying for a SAC or an exam from the kitchen table was never going to be ideal. And that teaching a class of five-year-olds online is something no-ones ever been asked to do before. But thanks to the hard work and patience of parents, carers, teachers and staff, and students weve done it. And done it so well.
17.01.2022 This is perfect! Thanks again Phonic books!

16.01.2022 After I have kids in a small group read, sort, and write & say words targeting a particular sound, such as the /i_e/ in "kind," "fly," "light," or "time," they ...read an /i_e/ sound passage like the one in the passage below from the Reading Simplified Academy. THEN it's fun for kids to work in centers to Search for the Sound. Notice how they're finding MULTIPLE spellings of the target sound in this passage (including the completely irregular "eye"). Just another way to reinforce those "inside parts" of words that so often get ignored.
16.01.2022 Song boxes are a fun way to help develop your childs communication and interaction skills. When using a song box you are encouraging your childs attention a...nd listening, understanding, and expressive language (verbal and pre-verbal) whilst spending some quality time together. Opportunities can be provided for choice making, turn taking, requesting continuation and imitation, whilst also learning about rhythm and rhyme. So dont throw that box away make it into a song box to enjoy with your child! Some children may also be able to use pictures to request songs they want. Song picture cards to follow soon keep a look out for them!

15.01.2022 Parents, are you you STILL trying to figure out how to help your child read words? Teachers, could you use some tips on helping parents help their child...ren? Most typical word-level errors and how to respond to them are in this quick little video example. You might find that your child benefits from you saying things like... "Try this sound." "What else could that be?" "Dont add an /llll/." [while tapping the space where she added it] "Dont skip the /lll/." [while tapping the space where he deleted it] You may also find a pencil is a lot more precise at helping your student see which letter-sounds she is confused by. And showing the different chunks, or syllables, in a word with a card helps our developing readers attack it more easily. Looking at more distance learning and want more tips for parents now teaching their child to read at home? 15.01.2022 Are there words one cant decode? All words are decodable because when we read we translate the letters on the page into sounds and words. This is decoding. A...t first, this process is slow and laborious but then it becomes automatic and we recognize words on the page at speed. Some common words have complex spellings. It is helpful to map these words orthographically (sound/letter) so that kids can make connections themselves. #phonics #learningtoread See more

12.01.2022 Wearing a face covering is a small action but it can make a big difference. And its one of those things where the more people do it, the exponentially bigger... that difference becomes. Thats why Victorias Chief Health Officer is making it a requirement not just a recommendation. Heres how itll work: If you live in metro Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and you need to leave home for one of the four essential reasons, you must have a covering over your mouth and nose. If youre travelling into regional Victoria for work or care reasons, that covering will need to remain on for the entire time youre there. If you live in regional Victoria, youll need to wear a face covering if you visit metro Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and were still recommending you wear one in your local area if you cant physically distance. There are a few exceptions. Kids under 12, those who have a professional or medical reason or if its just not practical, like when youre out running. In our schools, thatll mean teachers dont have to wear a face covering while teaching but students attending for VCE, VCAL or for onsite supervision will. Everyone will be expected to wear one on the way to and from school. This requirement wont be enforced until 11:59pm on Wednesday 22 July to give people a chance to buy or make a covering but if you already have one, please start wearing it now. And if you dont have a mask, a scarf is better than nothing. As with everything, this shouldnt be about looking for loopholes. Its about each of us doing something small to keep everyone around us safe. If Im wearing a covering, Im helping to protect you. If youre wearing one, youre helping to protect me. And if we all wear one, were all doing our bit to slow the spread.

12.01.2022 One sound - different spellings One of the difficult concepts in the English Alphabetic Code is that a sound can be spelled in different ways. Unlike transpare...nt writing systems like Italian or Spanish, where kids learn to read within three months, it will take the average child learning to read English three years! For this reason, we need to teach the Alphabetic Code in a structured and systematic way so all kids learn to read. Here is our graphic for the first five different ways to spell the sound /ae/. And there are more! 03.01.2022 One Sound - Different Spellings /ee/ One of the difficult concepts that kids need to understand about the English Alphabetic Code is that one sound (phoneme) ca...n be spelled in different ways. It is important to teach this systematically and explicitly. The teacher may introduce these alternative spellings in a gradual way, but students will need to be able to read and spell words with all these alternatives. Here is a graphic with the first five spellings of the sound /ee/. There are more! 01.01.2022 ALL THE ZONES ARE OKAY! There is no such thing as a BAD or GOOD feeling. Feelings just ARE. Sometimes we feel mad, sometimes excited, oth...er times exhausted. However, the most important thing is that we are regulated when we have those feelings. This is where the ZONES come into play. With my kiddos we start EACH session by identifying what zone we are in. We discuss our feelings, why we feel that way, and what we can do in that zone to manage our feelings while also learn. Using the Zones are SO powerful; especially when our littles see that even WE go through all the zones. I share during my sessions when I am in the red zone or blue zone , and tell kiddos what Im feeling and how Im managing it. As SLPS it isnt our job to tell kiddos to feel a certain way, rather to help them MANAGE that feeling in an appropriate and prosocial way! Drop a below if you love the zones like I do! #speechwithrach #thehappynow #blogger #speechie #athome #mindset #together #community #speechtherapist #love #nature #mindfulness #travel #life #positive #slp2be #speechtherapy #selfreflection #selflove #connection #emotions #feelings #regulate #slp #speechtherapy #zonesofregulation See more
