22.01.2022 Consider Moving for Dignity in October - starts tomorrow! Want to challenge yourself to move more, while supporting an innovative charity? Share the Dignity helps girls and women who, because of poverty, homelessness or other social factors, can't obtain products to allow them to manage their periods with dignity. Purchasing and distributing sanitary products is their mission, and Move4Dignity is their October fundraising challenge. You can take part individually, or you are ...welcome to join Extra Mile PT's team. Joining the challenge costs $20, and you make a pledge for the hours of extra exercise you will do (there are three choices: Run, Yoga or Other - choose Other and you can elect whatever you wish as your exercise). Additional fundraising is welcome, but optional - if you wish to do so through sponsorship and donations, there is information on the Share the Dignity website. Whether raising funds or not, please consider Sharing and Dignity and giving your own fitness motivation a boost! https://www.sharethedignity.org.au/fundraisers/ExtraMilept

13.01.2022 Happy spring, everyone! If you have been using winter as an excuse to avoid getting out to exercise, well, that's over. Congratulations to those of you who've taken up the challenge in July and August to try new activities or commit to new initiatives! For those who still want to increase activity (everyone, I hope), you might want to consider Steptember - a monthlong program to encourage increased activity and raise funds for eqipment, research, therapy and other support fo...r people living with cerebral palsy. And, to put our money where our mouth is, Extra Mile PT will sponsor anyone taking part in this great initiative. https://www.steptember.org.au/

12.01.2022 Alternative training venues I am continuing to watch and wait while COVID 19 cases are still cropping up in New South Wales, and am still not back doing personal training at the gym. Nor have I resumed my Wednesday and Friday "Steady, Stable and Able" classes. I miss my class members and my gym clients, but this seems the safest option at the moment (and the venues at which I hold group classes have also opted to keep them on hold... for the time being). For those who aren't already doing so, you are welcome to check out my Zoom sessions (personal training and group classes from your home). I also offer outdoor sessions, and have recently added two indoor venues to the training options available. These are in Peakhurst and Kareela, and combine the convenience of an indoor facility with equipment with the safety of a venue that is not open to the public, so only a handful (at most) of people will every use it at the same time. So if you would like to consider personal or small group training, but are reluctant to visit the gym, let me know, and I will be happy to show you the options. Below: The indoor facility at Kareela, which is equipped with spin bikes, dumbbells, kettlebells and a cable machine. Denise relaxes after her early morning session there. Outside, at Moore Reserve, Chris was able to train while Daisy watched.

11.01.2022 Congratulations to all of you who made positive changes in July! Several of you gave up, or made a significant reduction, in your drinking for a dry, or drier, July. Well done. Others have started new exercise regimes, or re-started exercises they hadn't done for a while. At least five of you have qualified for me to donate the promised $50 to a charity on your behalf, and I made my first $100 donation today (to Catholic Care, which works with refugees, young people facing ho...melessness, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups). So, for August, I'd like to invite you to keep challenging yourselves. It's the last month of winter, so many people will be thinking "it's too cold". What better way to warm up than to start moving? Spare a thought for those for whom outdoor exercise in winter means serious cold like those pictured. Once again, the details of how you challenge yourself are up to you. Here are a couple of my suggestions: if you are already exercising regularly, could you increase either the number of sessions or the length of your session? Small increments may be the way to go - could your half hour walk become a 40 minute one? could you aim to try one or two new exercise forms or workouts during the month? if weight loss is your goal, could you try some form of intermittent fasting? There is evidence that even limiting the hours in which you eat will have benefits; some evidence shows that just a 12 hour overnight fast is enough to make a difference. There are lots of variations to consider. another alcohol challenge? If you drink most days, what about confining yourself to alternate day drinking? Or set a target for a number of alcohol free days each week? Remember, whatever you choose is up to you, but try to choose something you can measure rather than a vague aim. Tell Extra Mile PT what your plans are and if we can help in any way. Yes, it's cold outside, and many of us aren't yet back to a regular gym or class schedule, but there will always be excuses if we look for them. So have an awesome August!

07.01.2022 Hi, friends, consider joining the Extra Mile PT team for this great cause. Share the Dignity supports girls and women who, for various reasons, do not have access to sanitary products and thus suffer from a loss of dignity. Some are homeless; others live in poverty and are prevented from working or attending school during their periods. Read more about how Share the Dignity is working to address this issue, so that all women can live with freedom and dignity. Choose your form of exercise and commit to it. Joining the team costs $20; seeking additional funds through sponsorship is optional. A great opportunity to give yourself an extra push to do that little bit extra activity! https://www.sharethedignity.org.au/fundraisers/extramilept

05.01.2022 Hope you are having an awesome August! Please keep challenging yourself with new exercise and other changes - even a small change can make a difference in keeping up motivation, mood, strength and other benefits. Extra Mile PT is pleased to have donated $150 on behalf of three clients who completed July challenges: $100 to Catholic Care and $50 to the Wayside Chapel (pictured below) .... https://donate.waysidechapel.org.au/winter https://www.catholiccare.org/ It isn't too late to join our August challenge - see last post for some suggestions. As for my July commitments, I have to come clean - I swam three weeks out of four (okay, 75% success rate) and had my long awaited roller blading lesson. For August, I have committed myself to keeping up weekly swimming and doing 2-3 bike rides each week. So far, I've done better with the latter, but tomorrow is another day! Keep warm, keep safe, keep moving, keep in touch!
