13.01.2022 Amblyopia or lazy eye is one of the most common causes of visual impairment in children. "Amblyopia is a reduction of vision in one eye because of abnormal visual experience early in life. Amblyopia not only has deficits in vision, but it causes deficits in 3D depth perception, reading and fine motor skills," Dr. Krista Kelly, Retina Foundation of the Southwest explains. In this randomized trial, children were assigned to two groups, one that used an iPad game for treatment ...and the other who used patching. After two weeks the group that patched also took home the game. "We found that at the 2 week visit children who had the iPad game improved much more than children who patchedBoth groups improved about 2 lines of vision on the letter chartand about 40% of the children recovered normal vision, " Dr. Kelly said. 10.01.2022 WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION? Macular degeneration is a condition that affects a person’s central vision, and the area affected is called the macula. Cases are typically seen in people aged 50 years and older, and it is the most common cause of vision impairment in this age group. It can cause loss of central vision and possible distortion, making straight lines appear bent, and letters or numbers jumbled when reading. Peripheral vision usually remains unaffected. If you're worried you're suffering from macular degeneration, give us a call.

08.01.2022 WHAT CAUSES DROOPY EYELIDS? Drooping of the upper lid occurs due to an increased weight on the eyelid from: - excess upper lid skin (dermatochalasis)... - relaxation/weakness of the muscle in the upper eyelid that usually opens the eye (ptosis) - drooping of the eyebrow downwards (brow ptosis). It is commonly an age-related change. If you suffer from this condition and want to do something about it? Contact ESI on 07 5570 8600 .
08.01.2022 Sometimes when a person is an inpatient of the public health system, public health funds will not allow patients to have private treatment while currently admitted. Our patient Michael recently had a stroke and was a patient at the local public hospital. He needed urgent eye treatment but his health fund wouldn't allow it. So we transported Michael to our Coolangatta rooms so he could have his vision saving intravitreal injection by Dr Bourke. ... Michael, we hope you're feeling better!
07.01.2022 ESI is now performing #anti-wrinkle #injections as part of our broader suite of services. Performed by Dr Heather Russell and Nina Kennedy RN at just $12 per unit. Call ESI on 07 5570 8600 today to book in.
07.01.2022 WHAT IS AN EPIRETINAL MEMBRANE? An Epiretinal Membrane occurs when a thin layer of cells grows over the retina, with time these cells contract and form scar-tissue. As the scar-tissue continues to contract, it can pull and distort the shape of the macula resulting in blurry and ‘wavy’ central vision. Epiretinal membranes will impair ‘straight-ahead’ activities, such as driving or reading. If you're suffering from this condition, call ESI on 07 5570 8600 to discuss what we can do to help.
07.01.2022 Children love tablets and smartphones, but it’s contributing to a spike in short-sightedness. They can calm a child in seconds and keep them entertained for hours. Tablets and smartphones have become an essential kid-wrangling item for many car trips, restaurants, waiting rooms, you name it.... But there’s a catch: the more kids watch things up close on screens, the more they put their eyes in danger. Short-sightedness (or myopia) is rising at an alarming rate in Australia a recent study has shown that it now affects 19 per cent of 12-year-olds, which is almost double the amount in 2005. 05.01.2022 Fellow sufferers of foggy glasses, sandpaper-dry contact lenses and terrible vision, read on. This is a safe space for us to commiserate while squinting at one another in confusion. I’ve resented my crappy eyesight since Year 5, when I first got glasses $39 goggles a la Napoleon Dynamite (but like, before that look became ironically trendy). I counted down the weeks until I could get contact lenses, but these were a menace of their own. Both for the eyes, and the emotional ...state. They get foggy and itchy. They slide around as they please, and disappear halfway up your eyelid without notice. Five years later I learnt I was allergic to one of the key ingredients in them, but still, they proved inconvenient as hell... READ MORE -->
