21.01.2022 Interesting fact: the risk of visual impairment increases by 25% for every 1 diopter of myopia. Therefore if we can reduce a persons myopia by 1 dioptre we can reduce their risk of visual impairment by 25%. Myopia control is worth the battle.

18.01.2022 Applying a few drops of Nano solution to your eyes may be a novel way to control myopia. The drops work via the modification of the corneal refractive index. Initially an application is downloaded to the patient's phone, the phone is thus connected to a laser. The application creates a laser pattern on the patient's cornea to correct any irregularities. This pattern helps facilitate entry of he Nano drops into the eyes. The Nano drops will activate the stamped optical pattern and change the refractive index to achieve the desired vision correction. However his treatment has thus far only been tested on animal subjects and further testing is needed before it becomes commercially available

07.01.2022 Below are 5 lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of progressive short-sightedness 1. 90 minutes of active outdoor time - In the past decade, the relationship between short-sightedness and time outdoors has been extensively studied. There is strong evidence to suggest that increased time spent outdoor is helpful in preventing the onset of short-sightedness. The evidence is not as strong for slowing the progression of short-sightedness. Therefore, outdoor intervention has a l...arger effect in children who are yet to develop short-sightedness compared to children who have already begun to develop mild myopia. The association between increased time spent outdoors and protection against myopia in children and adolescents has been summarised, which linked every additional 1 hour of outdoor time per week with a reduction in risk of myopia by 2%. 2. Vitamin D and short-sightedness - Inadequate Vitamin D exposure has been suggested as a mechanism that may increase the risk of short-sightedness. It could be possible that a lack of time outdoors reduces vitamin D levels and subsequently results in short-sightedness. A number of studies have reported lower levels of vitamin D in people who are short-sighted compared with people who are not short-sighted. However, it is important to remember that no causal relationship has been found. 3. High intensity light levels and short-sightedness - High light levels (greater than 1000lux) have been found to control the onset of short-sightedness in animal studies. Lighting levels need to be at 1000 lux. Natural light has also been found to be more protective against the development of short-sightedness than artificial light. 4. Near work and short- sightedness Several studies have linked near work with myopia. The results, however, are variable. Current evidence suggests that long duration of near work that is consistent at a distance < 30cm with lesser breaks are more important than total number of hours. The advice is that when doing near work hold your reading material at a distance of 40cm or greater, Also remember to take a short break every 20 minutes and perform some distance viewing tasks. 5. Modern lifestyle and short-sightedness - In modern times life has become more demanding and there is less time to exercise on a regular basis. People spend more time indoors performing near work tasks such as studying, playing game son mobile devices and watching TV. Eating behaviours have changed and people are consuming much higher quantities of high glycemic index, processed food (high sugar, additives, and less nutrition). This high consumption of refined sugar can cause elevated insulin levels which in turn leads to diabetes and increased abdominal fat. In animal studies it has been found that insulin injected into the eye results in the development of short-sightedness. There is conjecture about whether poorly controlled insulin levels can precipitate the onset of short-sightedness.

01.01.2022 https://commons.pacificu.edu/opt/14/ This is a great article highlighting the importance of a healthy diet low in sugar with respect to reducing the progression of myopia. Increased outdoor time is also a large factor when looking at simple lifestyle changes that are able to reduce the prevalence of myopia.
