24.01.2022 Hark - it's coming up to the festive season and this wonderful event, to be held at Midland Oval, promises to be a jolly good evening and one to get us all in the Christmas spirit. We'll see you there. Ho ho ho.

21.01.2022 My office recently has overlooked mountains, jungle, waterfalls and the largest volcanic lake in the world, courtesy of the Consulate General Republic of Indonesia, the Ministry of Tourism Jakarta and the Indonesian Diaspora Network - Western Australia. The whirlwind, eight-day trip included Lake Toba and Nias, North Sumatra's 'hidden gems' - Lake Toba is spectacular - it's about 100kms long, 30kms wide and 505 metres deep. It was my good fortune to stay at the five-star Taman Simalem Resort set in 206 hectares of pristine countryside, surrounded by jungle and Lake Toba. So easy to slip into a feeling of being warmly cocooned in my own island paradise. Pinch me! More highlights of the trip to come - watch this space!

20.01.2022 Samosir Island, almost in the centre of Lake Toba, is another stunning destination and one that is famed for its annual music festival, held in August. We travelled by boat and stayed at Samosir Cottages overlooking, yes, the lake! And took every opportunity to swim in the pool overlooking - the lake! I interviewed Henry Manik, the awesome Indonesian musician now living in the Netherlands with his French wife who helped to put Samosir on the map with his love of music. Havi...ng established the festival several years ago, the event attracts international as well as Indonesian bands. And what's more - Henry funds it to the tune of US$150,000 paying for all flights and accommodation - and one year, even an orchestra of 80! Why? He wants the world to know that his corner of the globe is a terrific place to visit as well as a music lovers' haven. We walked to the festival on a warm, balmy night to join 12,000 other music lovers. An event not to be missed. Put it in your diary. See more

A true story by Vincent Forrester, beautifully illustrated by Jayo Stenz and written by Margaret James it's a rollickin' tale of buckin’ camels, roarin’ land rovers, and judo-punchin’ musterers in the Outback of Australia in the ‘60s and ‘70s. 16.01.2022 Humanitarian Dr Tereria Trent is living proof that anything you put your mind to will eventuate. And she will be in Perth this weekend to encourage and show West Australians how to dream big and achieve those dreams - partnering with kikki.K founder Kristina Karlsson to present a workshop in the city. The future for this awesome Zimbabwean woman looked pretty dire when growing up. Living in a hut with no running water or electricity in a rural village in her home country, an...d with no access to schooling because of her gender, she held onto a steely determination - to achieve an education and a move to America. She taught herself to read and write using her brother's notebooks; writing down her dreams of obtaining a higher education and moving to America, placing the paper in a can and burying the can under a rock. At the age of 11 years old she became a child bride and at 18 she had three children. You would think her dreams were thwarted! Never estimate the power of a woman! Two decades later - sheer determination and a belief in herself had seen her make America her home, earned her multiple degrees and a place on the global stage with world leaders. With a commitment to giving back to the community, Dr Trent established the Tererai Trent Foundation - supporting 6,400 students in 12 schools in rural Zimbabwe. The event, organised by the dynamic entrepreneur Joan Dellavalle, is taking place on Sunday, October 6 in the city. Dream on. See more

11.01.2022 89.7FM Saturday program Living, Laughing and Learning kicked off 2020 with plenty of laughs, conversation and, as always, new things to learn! Clinical hypnotherapist Bass Tadros gave listeners an insight into how he resolves personal and professional challenges for clients.

08.01.2022 The Outback was the perfect location for actor Sarah Snook to read 'The First Camel Cup' one of the 22 books in the Reading Tracks series by author Margaret James. The books are helping to 'close the gap' between those who have high functional literacy skills and those who fall well below. A collaborative effort between Senior Cultural Elders and the author, the series is a colourful collection of stories of traditional tracking, hunting, and cooking of foods in time-honoured... methods, aimed at older readers. The author has just launched her collection of activity books for each story.

08.01.2022 There's plenty to talk about when sharing a table with these two driven, awesome women who are passionate about helping others - (l-r) Hannah Brown - member, Gender Equality Committee - West Australian division of the United Nations and Fleur Massey founder of Blue Guardians an organisation supporting the mental wellbeing of first responders, military personnel, and their families. A fun and interesting evening. A shout out to the patient wait staff at the Wild Fig, Scarbrough! :)

08.01.2022 The surf was definitely up for Mark Lane CEO of Surfing WA when given the chance to ride the waves at one of the world’s most sought after island locations - Nias, northern Indonesia, recently, The location was made that much sweeter for this passionate surfer as it has been on his bucket list for years. I caught up with Mark as he was making his way to the water’s edge.... Nias is loved by the world’s top surfers and it’s pretty much one of those waves in surfing folklore, said Mark. It seriously keeps company with waves in Hawaii and I would have loved to have surfed it when I was 30 years of age, far fitter and stronger. A landlubber (even though I live in Western Australia surrounded by ocean and world-class wave riders!) it was obvious I had zilch knowledge of surfing when I asked Mark to explain the attraction of these waves. It’s the size and type of wave it’s a long barrelling right-hander in surfing terms, and it is renowned for good, long, clean tube rides. Getting out into the water was an easy dive into a keyhole and a paddle out with dry hair - in surfing terms it means you don’t have to fight your waves through the centre you can just cruise your way into the line up so you actually come from behind the wave. Coming in was a little more difficult but still in global surfing standards, was an easy ‘in’. I caught three waves and they didn’t disappoint it’s the ideal holiday you could do with one or two of your mates, said Mark who was a guest of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia Perth and the Indonesian Diaspora Network WA.

05.01.2022 The Salvation Army is one of the most identifiable, international charitable organisations helping those who need help the most. With that in mind, 89.7FM Perth decided to present the Sye Myc Wednesday morning show from outside a local store in the station's catchment area of Joondalup. It was a 'revolving door' of great music, some by guests - Tanya Ransom (folk, blues, roots) who sang her latest single Armour and Matty T Wall who kept everyone transfixed with music from his... latest album- Transpacific Blues. In between Sue spoke with Salvation Army 'troopers' Lieutenant Simone Smalley and Warren Palmer who gave an insight into the amazing programs the Salvation Army offers. It also came to light that most people buy about 27kg of new textiles every year - of that amount - 23kg ends up in landfill. To counteract this, the Salvos, Australian Red Cross and Vinnies of Australia have started an awareness campaign - Moving the Needle - to encourage everyone to donate their unwanted goods to these organisations in a bid to reduce our landfill imprint!
