23.01.2022 Myopia Myopia (short-sightedness) is becoming increasingly more common. Why? Family history aside, there is now compelling evidence that our lifestyles have some role in this. Low levels of outdoor activity, low levels of light exposure and prolonged close tasks each appear implicated. School holiday time is a great opportunity for kids to get outside (with appropriate sun protection of course!), to create some good habits to be active and to lower the risk of developing myopia.

23.01.2022 Janelle attended the WA Optometry conference in Fremantle over the weekend. It is important to stay up-to-date in the world of eyecare, and conferences like this one are instrumental in staying informed. Topics as varied as macular degeneration, kids and myopia and diabetes were covered, with up-to-the-minute information conveyed by local and interstate optometrists and ophthalmologists.

15.01.2022 An Amsler grid is a small paper chart (this one has a handy magnet on the back to pop on your fridge) which lets you self-monitor your vision between eye examinations. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia, and it is important that it is picked up early, as prompt treatment can be extremely effective to save sight. It is crucial that any observations of change in vision/any of the grid becoming blurry or distorted is checked immediately with an eye examination. We have Amsler grids here at EyesWest, and, with the kind support of Macular Disease Foundation Australia, are free.

03.01.2022 Janelle was recently in Perth, dropping off a box of over a hundred pairs of glasses at the Optometry Australia office. From here the glasses are assessed and measured before being bundled up ready for overseas aid trips. With travel restrictions, these trips will obviously be some way off, but the people who receive this donated eyewear will be very grateful to receive them eventually. In Australia it is easy to take the ability to see for granted, but it is a very different story in many other countries. A pair of glasses can be life-changing! Thank you for your continued generosity in donating no-longer-needed eyewear.
