14.01.2022 Found a bargain online? Don’t be a tool If you think you’re getting a deal too good to be true, it probably is. The theft and reselling of tools online is a common problem for people working in trades with over 24,500 power tools stolen in Victoria last year. To assist with the recovery of stolen tools, Crime Stoppers Victoria and Victoria Police are encouraging tradies to engrave or mark tools for easy identification. The letter V followed by a Victorian Licence number is ...recommended. If you are suspicious about the selling of cheap online tools, report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au or call 1800 333 000
12.01.2022 *** SCAM WARNING *** Scammers are always out there, preying on the vulnerable or unaware. In recent weeks, at least three East Gippsland residents have been scammed losing a substantial amount of cash. The scams have involved caravans, cars and excavators. Fake websites pretending to sell cars, caravans and machinery are increasing in number as the number of victims and their losses also increase.... Victims have reported scams after they have paid for cars, caravans and machinery that were advertised at greatly discounted prices on fake websites, but the goods never turned up. Originally, items are purchased from a bogus website and a fake courier company is named to fool victims into believing that their purchases are being delivered. The websites then close down, however, other websites then spring up to take their place: Its becoming more difficult for fake websites to be recognised, as they often steal the identity and ABNs of legitimate online retailers. But if the prices being offered are too cheap, then you need to do more research before parting with your money. All consumers who shop online should deal only with well-known and reputable traders and get recommendations from colleagues, family and friends who have had a successful shopping experience with those traders. A search for warnings or reviews might also indicate if the website is a scam. A sure warning sign is if the site asks for a direct bank transfer rather than a credit card payment. Paying by credit card gives you the option of getting a chargeback if the item doesnt arrive, but making direct bank payments usually mean your money is gone!!! Police ask everyone to be aware when purchasing larger items from unknown sellers. Please make sure your parents and grandparents are aware of and educated about the different scams that are being used. 02.01.2022 DOB IN A HOON - East Gippsland Hoon driving is a dangerous behaviour that puts the safety of drivers and other road users at risk. People living, working and enjoying our community have the right to feel safe. You can 'dob in a hoon' by phoning the confidential Crime Stoppers Hoon Hotline on 1800 333 000 or reporting it online through the Crime Stoppers website.... If you have dashcam footage or witness a hoon offence, you can report the matter to police and by providing a statement, the hoon matter can be investigated and followed through with hoon legislation. Hoon driving is: * Dangerous driving including excessive speed * Careless driving * Failure to have proper control of the vehicle * Causing the vehicle to make excessive noise or smoke * Repeat ‘driving whilst disqualified’ offences Information collected through the hotline enables Victoria Police to gather intelligence to target repeat hoon offenders and focus on particular areas. Anti-hoon laws are about making roads safer and reducing road trauma. They were introduced in Victoria in July 2006, and give police the power to impound, immobilise or permanently confiscate vehicles driven by people in a dangerous manner. The anti-hoon laws provide that if police have reasonable grounds for believing a driver has committed a hoon-related offence, they have the power to seize that vehicle and impound or immobilise it for 30 days (increased from 48 hours in 2011). A vehicle may be impounded or immobilised, regardless of who owns it and whether the driver is the registered operator. If you see hoon driving call Police immediately on 000 and report the incident. You can contact the Victoria Police Hoon Hotline on 1800 333 000 and provide confidential information about hoon drivers. You could be asked questions such as: * Can you identify individual cars you have seen driving at dangerously high speeds? * Do you know the name of a driver who regularly drives above the speed limit or at dangerously high speeds, or is involved in illegal drag racing? * Do you know where or when an illegal street drag race is taking place? *** Please remember DO NOT jeopardise your safety by approaching or confronting offenders.***
