25.01.2022 YOUR LOCAL POLICE ARE ASKING YOU TONIGHT!! Your vehicle that's parked outside tonight - Is it locked, are your valuables like your wallet, purse, mobile phone etc removed from it? If not, why not? There is nothing new about this message from your local police and yet still approximately 50% of vehicles broken into overnight are unlocked and 100% of the vehicles broken into have items of value to steal left in them. That's a frustrating statistic for a crime that could easil...y be avoided. DON'T BE A VICTIM OF AN OPPORTUNISTIC CRIME LOCK YOUR VEHICLE AND REMOVE YOUR VALUABLES!!!!

15.01.2022 A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM US TO YOU This festive season, more than any other in recent history, is taking on extra significance as people look to relax and celebrate after a challenging year. What this year has also shown us is the importance of family and looking after ourselves and each other. Your police want you to enjoy yourselves this festive season provided it is done in a safe, peaceful and respectful manner. Any violence, especially family violence, is unacceptabl...e and you can be assured that police will be treating any reports with the seriousness they deserve. Geelong and the Surf Coast are blessed with some of the most beautiful places, especially at this time of year. They are here for us all to enjoy. Those who wish to engage in anti-social behaviour, particularly driven by alcohol or drugs, will find themselves promptly coming to the attention of police. We will be out and about ensuring that people are doing the right things on our roads. We will be alcohol and drug testing as well as enforcing the road rules. It is feasible that there will be some traffic congestion on our roads, be patient, you will get there. There are restrictions on patron numbers allowed inside all licensed premises due to COVID-19 and this in turn is leading to longer queues outside licensed premises, especially those with late licences. The restrictions are being strictly enforced by both management and police and will not be changing in the near future. It is reasonable to suggest that if you find yourself in a long queue in the early hours of the morning, you will still be in it when the venue shuts. Also of concern are reports of people not socially distancing whilst in the queues. Your place in the queue remains the same irrespective of whether you are two metres or 20 centimetres from the person in front of you. If you are in and around licensed premises, respect others and keep the noise to a minimum. There are limited taxis in the CBD, so where possible, plan a lift home. With the warmer months comes the desire to cool off in the water. Beware of the dangers with swimming, be it in fresh water, pools or the sea. Males aged 25-34 years old are most at risk here. Whilst the advice our mothers gave us about the dangers of swimming shortly after eating may be up for debate, the dangers of consuming alcohol and swimming are not. Look after yourselves and each other. Senior Sergeant Gareth ROWE - Divisional Support Manager

11.01.2022 FIREARMS FRIDAY - CHRISTMAS EDITION As the holiday season commences I get a lot of enquiries about travelling with firearms. Many firearms owners incorporate their love of hunting and target shooting into their holiday plans and with that comes numerous questions; Can I take my firearms with me on holidays? ... Do they have to be locked in a safe in my car? How am I supposed to transport them in my vehicle And so on. The Firearms Act allows firearms owners the ability to transport their category A&B long arms. However there are several potential pitfalls that license holders need to be aware; I will touch on these at the end of this article. The Firearms Act states that when transporting firearms the license holder MUST ENSURE THE FIREARM IS CARRIED IN A MANNER THAT IS SECURE AND NOT DANGEROUS. And TAKE REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS TO ENSURE THE FIREARM IS NOT LOST OR STOLEN. And AMMUNITION MUST BE STORED SEPARATELY FROM THE FIREARM. As you can see the legislation does not mention anything specific about locking firearms in metal boxes, or putting them in a specific location within the vehicle etc. That said, I always encourage people to go above and beyond their legislative requirements when it comes to safety and security. What the legislation does do however is put the onus on you, as the firearms owner, to ensure the firearm is not stolen by taking all reasonable precautions. A common sense approach is all that should be required to comply here. For example. If whilst travelling you stopped at a supermarket to get some supplies and you; (a) Locked a firearm in the boot covered by a blanket with the vehicle locked and secured = REASONABLE Precautions. (b) Left the firearm on the passenger seat in plain view of all persons = UNREASONABLE. IMPORTANT As I mentioned earlier there are things we all need to be aware of when transporting firearms. Firstly, care needs to be taken when the travel you undertake takes you across the Victorian border. The above legislation is taken from the (Victorian) Firearms Act 1996. Legislative requirements about transporting firearms may vary between States and Territories. You will be obliged to follow the law of the State you enter. So ensure you get onto that states webpage and have a good understanding of their requirements. Also, there are other regulatory frameworks within Victoria, such as the Wildlife Act (Game Regulations) in Deer Habitat, that have their own storage legislation when you enter that designated area. National Parks and other designated areas may also prohibit firearms. The key is to plan ahead and do your research well in advance of reaching your destination. As always if you have further questions don’t hesitate to drop me an email. [email protected] To the entire firearms community, I would like to thank you for your ongoing support throughout a difficult year. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Aim straight. Stay safe. John
