23.01.2022 We recently welcomed Speckles the rooster to the farm. Speckles hatched from one of our own fertile eggs. Isn’t he beautiful? The little Eylesys are looking for more chickens to add to our flock. So if you happened to ‘panic buy’ some chooks during isolation and now you’re second guessing your decision - we’d love to offer them a genuine free ranging life on our little farm.

23.01.2022 Seven lovely chicks available The tiny white and black one is a pure Belgian Duccle $15 unsexed The other 6 are cross bred. My roosters are pure Welsummer, pure Silver Double Laced Barnevelder and even my little Belgian Duccle Rooster (he loves the big ladies.) The mama hens are all commercial laying hens - Hyline. ... What does that mean? You’ll have pretty chickens who are brilliant layers and hopefully live and lay longer than the average commercial chicken . $8 each unsexed or take all 6 for $45

18.01.2022 8 out of 12 of our fertile eggs hatched for this family’s first go at incubation. We’re calling that a resounding success. Our fertile eggs are just $10 a dozen (due to losing two roosters). We have another young Speckled Sussex boy - but he’s not working yet. Pm for more info.

16.01.2022 This beautiful boy holding one of our chicks is Eli. We are incredibly close to Eli and his family - he’s Sonny’s first real mate and his mum Jackie is one of my best friends in the world. He’s in for the fight of his life against cancer. They are a local Yeppoon family who will now call The Queensland Children’s Hospital home for the better part of this year. I would be beyond thankful for any donation you could give this family. Let’s ‘Rise for Eli’ - such an active, ...kind hearted and funny young man who’s been dealt a cruel blow. Please share. https://www.gofundme.com/f/eli-kent-amp-kent-the-family

13.01.2022 The Eylsies are selling up! They’ve decided not to breed chickens anymore - they’re just selling the fertile eggs - so if you have a broody chicken or want to witness the magic of hatching chicks - let us know. SOLD - Incubator - Janoel5-60 Easy, no fuss and effective incubator. We’ve had a few incubators and this was our favourite. There’s no bells and whistles like automatic turners or digital humidity metre, but it works well. $50... McCallum Made Chicken Tractor They don’t make them like this anymore. Steel frame and steel mesh. Snake proof, fox proof and dog/dingo proof. I have never lost a chicken or chick when it’s been in this. Very heavy, very sturdy. Can be easily raised up on wheels and moved around with extra attachment to give chickens fresh grass each day. Good for grass, good for chickens. Win win! $250 Chicks - unsexed, mixed breed Some gorgeous colouring here. $8 each Fertile eggs Will produce chicks as seen in picture. So pretty. $15 per dozen

12.01.2022 Don’t tell them about the chicken salt

12.01.2022 The little Eylesys have decided to sell their Pure Belgian Duccles - they have plans to breed the Silver Double Laced Barnevelders instead. Just quietly, these SDLB are the most beautiful chickens in the entire world. Huge Move Kids! But it’s time for a change. The following is for sale: Coop $100 3 Belgian Duccle Hens and 1 Belgian Duccle Rooster - $70 (must all go together)... We also hatched 11 gorgeous pure Silver Double Laced Barnevelder chicks from eggs posted to us from Victoria. We are selling four of these roosters. $25 each. They are approximately two months old. Pm us for more info.

08.01.2022 Holding new life in the palm of my hand The little Eylesies let the humidity drop too low during the hatch and this little chick had the shell membrane shrink around it - preventing it from busting out. I performed an emergency shell-section on this little one.

08.01.2022 Five lovely chicks available My roosters are pure Welsummer and pure Silver Double Laced Barnevelder. The mama hens are all commercial laying hens - Hyline. What does that mean? You’ll have pretty chickens who are brilliant layers and hopefully live and lay longer than the average commercial chicken . ... $8 each unsexed

08.01.2022 If you are after the prettiest chicken that ever lived to make any other chicken owner insanely jealous - then look no further. The children have decided to sell their male Silver Double Laced Barnevelders. I have not seen a more gorgeous bird - stunning!... Simply the most stunning black and white laced feathers and bright yellow legs. They are 4 months old they will begin working in another month or two. They are a large breed chicken. Roosters $15 each (6 available)

06.01.2022 If you are unfamiliar with the difference between meat chickens and heritage chickens, this is a good visual. A heritage chicken is on the left and the modern ...day meat chicken is on the right. The meat chicken, or Cornish Cross, is a combination of two chickens, the Cornish rooster and the White Plymouth Rock. It was first bred in the late 1950's as a result of a contest with a $5,000 prize! The cross has been selectively bred for the past 60 years to produce a chicken that grows twice a fast with breast meat so large "you can cut it like a steak", which was the original goal. The chicken you buy at the store is Cornish Cross, and it's only 7-8 weeks old when processed. The Cornish Cross (also called Cornish Rock) breeding program is owned by "big chicken". The birds do not reproduce, mainly because they die of heart attacks or break legs before becoming sexually mature. They're just too big and lazy to mate, but even if they did, the result won't be another Cornish Cross. They are also a very fragile bird. A mortality rate of 10-20% is not uncommon. What that means to homesteaders is that Cornish Cross is not a sustainable meat source. You buy chicks from the hatchery, raise them, process them, and then buy more. If the hatchery goes away, no more Cornish Cross. If you are old enough to remember eating chicken in the 1950's, then you ate heritage chicken. Heritage chicken is what we have running all over our yard. Certain breeds lend themselves to being "dual purpose", meaning good for eggs and meat. Breeds like Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, and Orpingtons are considered "heavy breeds" that are good for meat. Heritage breeds are sustainable, meaning they mate and hatch more. Homesteaders of old would let their chickens hatch new chicks, and eat the young roosters before they got tough (usually around 5-6 months old). Later they would process the old hens to make soups, stock, and the most delicious chicken and dumplings! Heritage chickens have much less breast meat and longer legs, but a much deeper flavor because they are older and have more time to develop flavor. Heritage chickens (or young roosters) are popular with our customers that grew up in another country. It's what they ate in the village where they grew up. They also tell us that the chicken in the store has no flavor! We tend to have more young rooster meat available because we incubate to replace old hens, and half of the chicks turn out to be roosters. It's tastier chicken to us, but if we show it to customers that grew up here, they say "What happened to your chicken?". So now you know. Class dismissed!

05.01.2022 15 gorgeous chicks available. Unsexed. $8 each. Roosters are pure Welsummer and pure Silver Double Laced Barnevelder. Mamas are Hyline - commercial layer. The hope is you’ll get a pretty bird that’s a brilliant layer too.

04.01.2022 Assume this safety position when driving the quad down to the chooks and straight over a snake. Yes that happened to me at 5am this morning. The neighbours must think I’m an absolute goose! Ps. That piñata stick is for defending myself against any rooster or ram that decides today is the day to attack the one who feeds them. #beprepared

04.01.2022 9 beautiful chicks left Must go ASAP $50 for the lot Massive Plastic Brooding Pod... Perfect to raise your chicks in. High sides mean no escapees for about 3 weeks when they can be moved outside. $20 Feeders and Waterers Perfect size for chicks. Take the lot for $10 Located Bungundarra.

02.01.2022 Friday arvos on the farm - worming pigs, free ranging sheep, cleaning the chook tractor and preventative lice and mite treatments all round. We’ll have fresh little chicks available in a week, and a whole swag of lambs born in the next fortnight. Ps. Yes I swore when I hit my head on a low branch

01.01.2022 Fertile eggs $15 a dozen. Large mixed breed layers. Hens are Hyline... Roosters are pure Welsummer and pure Silver Double Laced Barnevelder You’ll get pretty chickens who are great layers

01.01.2022 Welcome to the world little one. This will be the last ever little Belgian Duccle to hatch on our little farm - as we sold our breeding quad - and it’s a gorgeous Silver Millie Fleur

01.01.2022 Some sad news on the farm Some predator, likely a fox but could have been a dog or dingo broke into our chicken tractor at night and has killed 2 of our roosters and about 12 of our hens. We have reinforced the chicken tractor, wired the door shut at night and moved it much closer to the sheep paddock. Our gorgeous livestock Guardian, Pippy, does a brilliant job of protecting her flock - including four newborn lambs, from predators. We haven’t lost any chickens for ...the past 4 nights So our question to you - if you have bought chicks or fertile eggs from us and have any unwanted roosters under the age of three months (or even any hens - not everyone loves chickens like we do) - we would love to take them on so the children can continue to sell their fertile eggs in the future. We cannot accept adult roosters as their fighting will be incredibly violent with our adult roosters - especially Spartacus. If we take on very young boys they will quickly learn they are at the bottom of the pecking order and will fit in perfectly on our little hobby farm.

01.01.2022 Looking for something to do in isolation over Easter? Why not incubate some fertile eggs and watch the whole incredible hatching process. These fertile eggs are cheap at just $10 a dozen. Hens are commercial layers, roosters are pure Welsummer and a Heritage large mixed breed. ... We lost our other two roosters to a fox so the rooster to hen ratio is lower which means the fertility may not be as good as before. We can maintain social distancing by delivering today and you can leave money in letterbox. PM for more information.
