04.01.2022 UPDATE from BIA confirming that boating is still OK but please respect the restrictions so we may continue to avail of our waterways. The Boating Industry Association has today received advice the NSW Government has amended its restrictions that apply to boating. From 31 March 2020 NSW Government Public health directions have been updated requiring people to stay at home unless they have a ‘reasonable excuse’.... However, as there is on land, there are exceptions that apply on water. If you go out social distancing rules always apply at the boat ramp and on your boat. You should only be on your boat alone, or with no more than one other person; or with family who ordinarily live in the same household as you. A ‘reasonable excuse’ to use your boat could be to: 1. exercise (e.g. kayaking/sailing/paddling etc); 2. fish; 3. get to and from work, where the work cannot reasonably be performed from home; 4. get groceries; and 5. provide assistance, care or support to an immediate member of the person’s family. BIA is encouraged by the Transport for NSW update. Please refer to the full details of the update by clicking here. BIA will continue to support its members and the boating lifestyle. BIA also supports the essential need to preserve mental and physical wellbeing. Where it is safe and appropriate to do so, boating is an activity with proven ability to help people relax and deal with stress. Boating can support isolation measures where people stay home and only go outside for exercise and wellbeing clear of others and then return home. So where permitted, please be safe and responsible, and only use your boat on your local waters and only to the extent and for the purposes permitted by government agencies. And remember, you must observe the social distancing and hygiene requirements at all times which include: only for individuals and ‘people of the same household going out together’ no gatherings of more than 2 people apply social distancing from people you do not live with - keep at least 1.5m apart from others - keep the required distance from others at all times - no gathering wash hands before and after any time there is contact with shared surfaces at the boat ramp, when fuelling or at any other time you come in contact with any surface outside your family home take the most direct route to the water and only boat locally follow the Health advice
