13.01.2022 In 1974, Norman Tindale’s indigenous map of Australia was published and 50 years of work recognised. At the same time, a new method of dating called carbon dating proved beyond all doubt what he had argued for decades; that the Aborigines had inhabited the Australian continent for tens of thousands of years today, it is known that they arrived on the continent over 50, 000 years ago. Yet still we don't educate our children of the traditional owners of the land. There were ...over 500 different clan groups or 'nations' around the continent, many with distinctive cultures, beliefs and languages. Today, Indigenous people make up 2.4 per cent of the total Australian population (about 460,000 out of 22 million people). There were many different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities made up of people who spoke different languages with various cultural beliefs, practices and traditions. Before 1788 there were approximately 700 languages spoken throughout Australia with an estimated population of 750 000 people. See more
