07.01.2022 Yugto Mangyan house, with group of Mangyans, Mount Halcon, Mindoro, 1891. Mangyan is a collective term for the eight ethnolinguistic groups of Indigenous Peoples who call Mindoro home. These include the Iraya, Alangan, Tadyawan, Tau-buid, Bangon, Buhid, Hanunuo, and Ratagnon. ... The photographer here did not note the tribal group these Mangyan people came from but given the present and historic lands of the Alangan Mangyan, the people in this photo are most likely from the Alangan peoples. The Alangan Mangyans have traditionally practised swidden farming, which consists of eleven stages. Two of them are the firebreak-making (agait) and the fallowing (agpagamas). A firebreak is made so the fire will not go beyond the swidden site where the vegetation is thoroughly dry and ready for burning. Two years after clearing, cultivation of the swidden is normally ceased and the site is allowed to revert back to forest. Source: Photo via Michigan University. Info via mangyan.org)

05.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Judith Ventic, the longest running officer in the history of FAANT and a valuable leader of the Darwin community. Judith was admirable and had the most positive outlook in life, even contagious some would say. Judith will be deeply missed by all of us, leaving behind now all those fond memories we have of her. She was highly regarded by everyone who had the opportunity to meet her. This is truly a great loss to the D...arwin community. Judith will be profoundly missed by everyone whose lives she touched. FAANT would like to send our love and sympathy to Kathy, Josef and Mama Fely.

01.01.2022 A very important message from the Office of the Philippine Consulate in Darwin, NT. For further notices, please join the private group - Philippine Consulate General, Darwin NT. Passporting Scheduled in August in Darwin is postponed until further notice.... The Philippine Ambassador, Ma. Hellen De La Vega sent a Memo to PCG Darwin today, 30 July 2020, informing this Office of the Embassy's decision to defer the passporting in Darwin and Adelaide to much later date. The new date will depend on the situation with covid 19 pandemic which affects Victoria and certain hot spots in Sydney. The Philippine Embassy receives advice and guidance from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Health Departments from all Australian States. It is rather sad that the Embassy has come to this decision which disappoints many. This is an URGENT NOTICE: For those who hold Philippine passports with low validity, please contact John Rivas AM, Philippine Consul General a.h. to discuss the need to extend the validity of their passport and to avoid passport from expiring for another one year, through this email address: [email protected]. Remember validity extension is only for ONE YEAR AND GIVEN ONLY ONCE. If the remaining validity of the passport is less than 6 months. the Consul General advises the Philippine e-passport holder to contact the Office of the Philippine Consulate Darwin at once. The Procedure for Validity Extension includes: Filling in 2 Forms: Request for e-passport validity extension, Application for Validity Extension with a current photo. Copy of current passport (NOT EXPIRED), copy of visa grant notice. FORMS CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE WEBSITE OF THE PHILIPPINE EMBASSY CANBERRA or be sent as email attachments through [email protected] Validity Extension is an emergency measure therefore the reasons you write have to be right to avoid rejection by the Head Office at DFA Manila. It is, therefore, necessary for you to come and see Consul General John Rivas AM at 22 Mirrakma Cres. Lyons. Mobile 041 708 1546. Allow one week for this procedure from application to approval and stamping of validity extension on the amendment page of the e-passport. Once the request for validity extension. Consul General John Rivas will stamp the extension on the passport of the applicant and fee of $36 applies. It is also important to make an appointment before coming to the Office. This is in compliance with social distancing. It is regrettable that the covid 19 pandemic has postponed the passporting in Darwin three times. Thank you and hope to hear from you. Please share this message with family and friends and all those with this concern. John Rivas AM PCG Darwin -
