24.01.2022 It's a Word Thing! Practice or Practise? The two words sound the same, but in British English, which is what is commonly used in Australia, the spelling and meaning are different, i.e. 'practice' is a noun (a 'naming' word); 'practise' is a verb ( a 'doing' word).... In the US and Canada, 'practice' is commonly used as both noun and verb, so I will discuss only the British English usage. Practice (noun) 1 = something that is repeated over and over: Examples: 'We do two hours' practice every day in order to improve our skills.' Practice (noun) 2 = a habit or method of doing something: Example: 'Brushing your teeth after every meal is a wise practice.' Practice (noun) 3 = a business where professional services are provided, e.g. doctor, dentist, solicitor, accountant Example: 'My doctor has a practice in Burwood, but also has practices elsewhere.' Practise (v) - the action of doing something over and over Examples: 'We've been practising every day in order to improve our skills.' ‘He practised even more than usual in the lead-up to the match .’ ‘Practising often ensures steady improvement.' ‘Why don't you practise what you preach?’ ‘He practises on his keyboard as soon as he gets home from school.
