08.01.2022 Probably the best part of the job is you never know what is going to turn up. We have a stool and square of carpet from the Queen’s coronation, we have a mechanical fly trap that is one of the wackiest things I’ve seen, but the prize possession would have to be an original sketch by Tom McAuley that he created for dad when the two were friends at University. It is a sketch of a Speckled Hen beating up a brown duck. Long story, come in and we’ll tell you the whole story, but ...it always makes me smile. Since 1970, The Speckled Hen Antiques has been situated in Townsville showcasing valuable, ageing collectables that have been rediscovered in modern day society and linked back to distinct periods of history from all around the world. Tristan Fleming, son of the stores founder Ian Fleming and proud worker of The Speckled Hen Antiques, has grown up surrounded by the weird and wonderful items gathered throughout history. Originally the store was situated in Brisbane, 1967 but after Tristan’s father Ian met Joelle, they fell in love and opened the quirky and historical antique store together in Townsville, 1970. However, as the two ran the business together, Tristan says Ians first love was always chickens. Some people like dogs, I like dogs, but dad likes birds, especially chickens. His second love was antiques, hence the antique shop, but the name is all about Dad and his chickens. Laughingly, Tristan says, I guess I’m lucky, it could have been called the Freckled Chook. The Speckled Hen Antiques is a family business with Ian, Joelle and Tristan working together, in Tristan’s words, always looking for that missing piece of information to fill in the blank. The family’s passion for antiques, chickens and the history in each of their rare and treasured findings, is what makes the store all the more worthwhile. To be taken back to a moment in time, come and visit The Speckled Hen Antiques located at 297 Flinders Street. #FacesOfFlinders #TheSpeckledHenAntiques #AluminiumArtExclusives #TownsvilleShines Article by Maisie Sky
