25.01.2022 Be honest do you pay yourself a proper wage from your business? Could you go out tomorrow and get a comparable job that earns *much* more than you are paying yourself? I have this conversation a lot. Business owners (especially females) feel like being able to work for themselves in a job they love is a justification for doing more work for less money. ... Repeat after me - You. Deserve. To. Be. Paid. Well. Yes. You need to be reinvesting in your business in the early days. But you still deserve to be paid for your hard work. Yes. Working in and building a business IS a reward. But. Let’s be real. Money is important. You can have it both ways! A financially healthy business should be able to reward its owner with a healthy pay cheque AND have profits to re-invest to build the company. Profits are for reinvesting. Your wage is NOT profit. Your wage is an operating expense of the business. If you are not able to pay yourself a wage, and turn a profit for reinvesting, I am your girl. With the right plan and strategy, you CAN have it all! Get in touch for a free financial health check consultation and we can start to turn things around. #womeninbusiness #sawomanAustralia #businesschicks #facyandco #virtualcfo #adelaidebusiness #businesssa #cashflowproblems #profitability #adelaideaccounting #financialmanagement #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #businessstrategy #cpa #cpaaustralia #businessbudget
24.01.2022 Making the decision to hire your first, second or twentieth staff member is a BIG DEAL. So it's super important that you consider all of the costs involved. The base salary is your starting point. But remember that pesky old superannuation needs to go on top.... Don't forget leave loading. Long Service leave is also a cost that needs to be expensed EVERY year in anticipation that your person will stay for 7+ years. Workcover premiums will also increase. If this person goes on leave, will you need to fill their role with a temp? If so, you need to count this as well. Do they need a laptop? A seat on Zoom? An email address? A laptop? A mobile... the list goes on. It's important to look at the whole picture when costing up the decision to hire. Does this all sound too hard? Do you want to be sure you're doing it right? You are in luck - I can do this really well. Get in touch and I can put together a full costing, or evaluate the cost of different contract options before you make the big decision. #womeninbusiness #sawomanAustralia #businesschicks #facyandco #virtualcfo #adelaidebusiness #businesssa #profitability #adelaideaccounting #financialmanagement #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #businessstrategy #cpa #cpaaustralia #businessbudget #adelaidebusinesscoach #strategycoach
23.01.2022 1 year ago today, I started a new job. A big job. A job that I landed after an intense 12 week recruitment process. My 'dream job'! On paper it was all that I wanted, and it landed me right where I thought I should be at this stage of my career. By the end of the first day, I just *knew* that it wasn't right.... The red flags that signalled a seriously toxic work place were endless and shocking (even to someone with a thick skin like me). I started losing sleep, and weight, at a rapid pace and felt sick every day when I arrived at work. I lasted 4 months before resigning and to be honest, it was probably 3.5 months too long. Did I feel like a failure? Yes! Was my confidence SHOOK? Yes! Was it the right choice? Oh my god - yes! I'm so happy that I went through that experience to really help me realise what my values are, what my worth is, and take steps to align all of these things with the next stage of my career. What was the catalyst that led you to live out your small biz dreams? Have you ever experienced a toxic workplace? #womeninbusiness #sawomanAustralia #businesschicks #facyandco #virtualcfo #adelaidebusiness #businesssa #businesscoaching #profitability #adelaideaccounting #financialmanagement #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #cpa
21.01.2022 Exciting times for my client Tom Welsby of ResVu! So exciting to see such big things ahead for this trailblazing Adelaide company!
19.01.2022 Pricing your product or services properly is important if you want to be profitable. It is also hard to do, particularly for service-based businesses. It can be really confronting to put a price on your skills/experience & confidently communicate this price without cringing/justifying/discounting. Treat your time like a product - you wouldn't give free 'things' or big discounts away to everyone who walked into a shop selling physical goods, so don't give away your genius to... people wanting a quick [free] chat. Don't charge the hourly rate you would earn as an employee. The rule of thumb is - triple your hourly rate AT LEAST. If you could earn $50/hr as an employee, charge $150/hr as a consultant. Remember you need to be able to pay yourself at least $50/hr + super + contribute to overheads + cover business development & admin time (which is unpaid when you own your own biz) + put money aside for holiday pay and so on. Consider fixed fee pricing or packages, particularly where you can lock-in recurring revenue streams for 3, 6 or 12 months. Be confident in your value - without confidence & self-worth, you will always cringe telling people a price. You will be stuck in a cycle of discounting, under-charging and under-valuing which means working for little return. Cheap isn't necessarily what your ideal clients value. If the average price for your service is between $300-$500 and you quote $150, this is likely to create a feeling of scepticism. Why so cheap? Is she unqualified/inexperienced/oblivious? Clients want you to solve a problem that they can't solve themselves (or don't have time to solve) & they value your genius. Own it. Don't fret over pricing exactly right the first time. You can change it at any time. If you create a package and sell it to two clients and then realise you have grossly underestimated the price, just tell the next prospective client the new price. Business is all about trial & error, & the reality is you will probably undercharge in the early days, but as you get better at estimating time & value you will begin to increase your profit margin. How do you feel when you tell a prospective client how much you cost?

16.01.2022 Do these 3 things right now to boost your holiday cash flow. Invoice all of your customers ASAP if you have finished some client work, but raising and sending them the invoice has slipped off your radar, get onto it straight away. Lots of businesses switch off for many weeks at this time of year so you need to get those invoices in asap to ensure payment before the holidays. Stop procrastinating about reconciling your accounts get your accounting... software reconciled and figure out who still owes you money. Send a payment reminder to all overdue customers [like, right now]. Set yourself a reminder to send out any recurring invoices at the usual time. If you usually invoice customers a fixed monthly amount on the 1st of the month make sure you still do this as close to the 1st January as possible, even if you are taking time off. If you can, spend some time this week to set up those invoices to automatically send out at the usual time. 15.01.2022 Call me a weirdo, but I get so excited when a client comes to me wanting help to implement Xero in their business. Clare & Tom @hammer_and_tongs_adl asked me to help them set up their Xero system for the new financial year last year, and it has been life-changing for them to bring their business into the world of Cloud accounting software. It's also so easy for me and their accountant to jump in at any time, virtually, to help them with a query, or a process they are stuck on..., or to lodge BAS or STP. It is actually not that hard, and the time savings and value in having real-time data available to run reports and understand where your business is at with debtors, cash, profit at any given time is quite often life-changing! Xero is the most amazing, intuitive and easy-to-use system I have ever worked with. It suits businesses from solopreneurs right through to businesses with up to 20,000 transactions a month! If you are feeling overwhelmed in your business, and dealing with manual systems, spreadsheets or even worse - WORD documents for sending invoices... then drop me a DM - I would love to help bring you over the world of Cloud accounting ...
14.01.2022 Tom was my first client and I cannot believe how far he, and his business, has come in just over four months since we started working together. Operating costs have reduced significantly, back office processes are now streamlined, bad debts have almost been eliminated and cash is now flowing IN more than OUT. And even better, sales are growing month-on-month at an even quicker pace than the goals we had set! Tom is a gun salesman, and a qualified accountant too, but he reco...gnised that closing deals is where his focus needs to be, and bringing in a Virtual CFO would remove a huge workload from his already full plate. Suffice to say the weekly finance meetings are now a regular cause for high-fives and Tom cannot wait for his next Board meeting to show off the results for the past couple of months. It is amazing how much clarity and confidence comes from knowing your numbers, and having a strategic finance partner in your corner. #womeninbusiness #sawomanAustralia #businesschicks #facyandco #virtualcfo #businesssa #businesscoaching #profitability #adelaideaccounting #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #cpa #clientappreciation #testimonialtuesday #adelaideaccountant #adelaidesmallbusiness #businesscoach #adelaidevirtualcfo
12.01.2022 Great business decisions need to be made with your head *and* your heart. Gut-feel decision making can result in disaster. The numbers may never stack up and when numbers don't stack up, your gut is not enough. Analytical decision making can result in disaster. Have you ever seen that Little Britain skit where "The computer says no?"... Classic. If you purely follow the numbers on a spreadsheet to make a decision, and ignore that niggling feeling in your gut, it can also resu...lt in a disaster. If something is highly profitable, but requires you to do something that is not aligned with your values, then this is not the right decision. If you are a gut-feel type of person, don't forget that without running those numbers, you are flying blind. Pull out that nerdy spreadsheet right now and make sure your gut isn't getting too carried away. Or if you need a profesh numbers nerd, running the numbers to help you make that decision is something I can help with - no decision is too small - I would love to help you make the best decision possible to take your biz to the next level. #womeninbusiness #sawomanAustralia #businesschicks #facyandco #virtualcfo #adelaidebusiness #businesssa #cashflowproblems #profitability #adelaideaccounting #financialmanagement #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #businessstrategy #cpa #cpaaustralia #businessbudget #financialanalystadelaide #adelaideaccountant
08.01.2022 I never wanted my daughter to wear pink. When she was born, I envisaged her being dressed in greys and navy blues and neutrals, and not playing with Barbie dolls, or wearing ‘silly’ princess dresses. Even though when I was a child, I was all about pink and heels and dress ups and dolls, somewhere along the way I became a bit of a jaded adult who felt like to get ahead in the world as a female, we need to be more ‘male’. I had been conditioned to think that pink, and... dolls, and playing dress-ups were frivolous and not-feminist. Because, when you think about it, in society many things which are typically female are considered silly, frivolous, not-to-be-admitted-to if you want to get ahead. We are taught to repress or deny liking these things to be taken seriously. Even after having kids and returning to the workplace you feel like you must work like you don’t have children. That suddenly you take your job less seriously, are less ambitious and less capable. But somewhere along the way, I have internally challenged all the assumptions I held true about typically feminine things. My daughter exclusively wears pink. She loves Barbies, and Elsa, and Unicorns and Rainbows and sparkles and nail polish. My daughter is also strong willed, fierce and opinionated, smart and strong AND she walks through the doors to kindy dressed in princess dresses and fairy wings, with her glittery unicorn backpack on with all the confidence I wish I had for so many years when I struggled with how to be a female in male dominated professions and workplaces. I hope that she grows up in a world that lets her keep that confidence as she carves her own fabulous path through life. Happy International Women’s Day! See more

07.01.2022 I am generally a very late adopter of technology. However, when I set up Facy & Co, one of the first decisions I made was to be a paperless biz and I have been on a mission to find all the options to automate and systemise using Cloud based technologies. Google Suite - I use GMail and Google Drive for all of my email and document storage. I cannot believe I spent so many years of my life transferring documents with a memory stick, or emailing myself files. #shame... @toggltrack for tracking my time. I use the free version and it is SO good. I can group my clients by projects and all you have to do is click 'start' and 'stop' when you are going about your day. It is then easy to see how much time each task took, how many hours for each client and just generally how I spend my days. [I love that it notices when I get up to check the fridge for the 40th time and pops up a notification to discard the time I spent procrastinating in the pantry]. @asana has been a game changer for me. I use the free version which is more than adequate. Up until 3 weeks ago I was a handwritten To-Do-Lister and it was making me feel overwhelmed and out of control of my tasks and due dates. Asana is amazing. @xero Of course I love Xero. Almost all of my clients use it, as do I. It is so easy to use and so easy for me to access my client's files to be able to do my thang. @canva I use the free version and I use it for proposals and social media posts. Graphic design still isn't my key skill set, but Canva certainly makes it easy for even huge amateurs like me. @typeform This app is amazing for sending forms to clients. I have an initial 'Discovery' survey which I sent to prospective clients and I intend to use it for new client detail forms. Much easier and more profesh than sending the old Word doc to be filled out. I use the free version for this too. 06.01.2022 I run a small business and was so lost in the numbers. I thought the amount in my bank account was what would tell me if I was making money or not How wrong I was. Jodi was an absolute pleasure to work with. She took the time to understand all aspects of my business, going through everything with a fine-tooth comb. She then presented her findings in a very kind and clear way. Thanks to Jodi I now know the importance of cash flow, how to use a profit and loss report, and how... I can reduce costs and streamline my processes. I’m confident with making business decisions and I know exactly what I have to do to reach my business financial goals. Working with Jodi feels like working as part of team I’m so glad not to be navigating blindly on my own anymore! 05.01.2022 Did you know that revenue, profit and cash are all different beasts? It is easy as a business owner to get caught up in revenues, turnover, or whatever you want to call it. How many times do you read about a business that has "6-7 figure turnover", implying wealth, cash, profit, success? Did you know that it is easy, and in fact common, to have achieved revenue growth in 6 or 7 figures without actually making a profit OR having any cash in the bank?... This is one of the major downfalls of so many businesses - they strive for growth, throwing more and more cash into the pot to generate more revenues - but in the process they actually decrease their profitability. And then, when it comes to payday? They have no cash to pay themselves? What is the point? A financially healthy business has revenues, yes. It earns more than it spends, yes. BUT the most important part, is having cash in the bank. It is so easy to have great turnover, high profits, and ZERO CASH. Simply having plans in place for how you will spend and receive your cash can be an absolute game-changer for small business owners. We have small business profit and cash planning packages suitable for businesses of all sizes - get in touch to find out how we can help! #facyandco #cashflow #profit #cash #smallbusinessfinance #virtualcfo #adelaidebusiness #businesssa #cashflowproblems #revenue #turnover #profitability #forecasting #smallbusinessprofits #accounting #adelaideaccountant #adelaideaccounting #financialmanagement #cashflowtips #profitability #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #businessstrategy #cpa #cpaaustralia
02.01.2022 A Virtual CFO is a highly experienced and qualified professional who, instead of dedicating their expertise to just one organisation, works with many different organisations in an external, "virtual" capacity. A Virtual CFO sits between your bookkeeper (transactional) and your tax accountant (compliance) and works alongside both of these functions, as well as in partnership with you, to help you understand your numbers. A Virtual CFO is someone who is on your team, who can h...elp guide your strategic direction, be a sounding board and run the numbers for business decisions and issues. ie. hiring a new staff member, creating new product or service offering, investment in office space. A Virtual CFO can create profit & loss and cash flow forecasts which will give you absolute clarity around where your business will be at a point in the future. A Virtual CFO can review your existing finance function and check if things are being done as well as they could be, and work with your team members to improve processes. A Virtual CFO can review your monthly performance against forecast and write easy to understand reports which explain the HOW and WHY of your numbers for that month, and even attend board meetings with you. A Virtual CFO can help guide the business to grow by working with you to set and execute really specific, detailed, achievable roadmaps for how to get to your desired future state! A Virtual CFO can work with you as and when you need. Small businesses may only need a few hours a month, others may want weekly support. This is the beauty of a Virtual CFO - the service provided can meet your changing needs without you having to hire or fire a permanent resource. If this sounds like the sort of wing-woman you need in your biz, DM me for a no-obligation 30 minute discovery session! #sawomanAustralia #facyandco #virtualcfo #adelaidebusiness #businesssa #cashflowproblems #profitability #adelaideaccounting #financialmanagement #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #businessstrategy #cpa #cpaaustralia #businessbudget #adelaideaccountant #cfo #adelaidevirtualcfo
02.01.2022 My face if you had told me when I launched 2 months ago that I would already be FULLY BOOKED for 2020 by the end of October! Feeling so grateful and kind of mind-blown to be honest. 02.01.2022 Confession - when the seed for Facy & Co. was first germinating, my vision was that it would be a faceless business. I would be working behind the scenes and type captions and websites in third person and pretend that I was a big company to give legitimacy to my brand. Because, if it is just ME, why would anyone value my professional advice? I mean... who am I to call myself an expert? Does that mean I'm kind of up myself? IT MUST! But you know what? Somewhere over these pas...t 4 months I have realised that that vague, faceless brand was just not right. It was uncomfortable to admit this, and to realise that means putting myself and my face and my opinions out there. And saying out loud that I believe in myself and I know what I am doing, and I can do it well... This has been a Big Deal. So, HI! I'm Jodi. I have almost two decades experience working in finance and accounting roles in a variety of industries. I have worked in the big accounting firm, I have done the consulting, I have worked with bookkeepers, I have worked in huge corporate finance departments in senior financial management roles. I have a Bachelor of Business in Accounting, I got my CPA in 2011 and I have just been licenced as a CPA Public Practitioner too. So basically, I am legit! But I am also pretty emotionally intelligent, I'm a people person (even though I am secretly an introvert), I love a good chat and I love some good banter even more, especially if that chat is accompanied by delicious food. I have a 3 year old daughter and a 6 year old son and a husband who is also an accountant but he works in Wine now - which means cheap, "good" wine is very well-stocked in our house. #womeninbusiness #sawomanAustralia #businesschicks #facyandco #virtualcfo #businesssa #businesscoaching #profitability #adelaideaccounting #smallbusinessadelaide #businessmentoring #businessmanagement #cpa
