25.01.2022 Fair Canberra Inc. hopes everyone had joyous festive holidays and wishes you a happy New Year. We also express our support to all those who have been affected by the fires impacting various parts of Australia and understand it is a difficult time in our country at the moment. In regards to giving back to and supporting our community, at our recent Fair Canberra Executive Committee meeting, the team agreed to continue the 'Feed the Homeless BBQ Program' under a new trial as i...t was a success for the previous 3 weeks on the Friday afternoons. However, the committee and its collaborations have made arrangements for a renewed trial constituting of the same program beginning this Sunday instead of the previous Fridays to later decide which day of the week is most appropriate. The Fair Canberra Executive Committee cordially invites you to attend this Sunday's "Feed the Homeless BBQ Program": Where: Petrie Plaza, Canberra City Centre (Behind the Merry-go-round) When: This Sunday 19th January, 5pm - 7pm What will be included: The Committee Members and its collaborations will be cooking and preparing burgers with light refreshments and drinks for the homeless community in Canberra. The previous trial gathered more than 20 homeless individuals who had many positive things to say about how we are carrying out the program so far. Fair Canberra is hoping to continue create a safe and community-oriented environment where our members and the homeless are able to connect, enjoy some food and live entertainment together. Fair Canberra Executive Committee would love to have our members and any of those interested on board to volunteer their time in help prepare and give, much needed, food to the homeless community located in the surrounding city. If you are interested, contact our President Nic Manikis as soon as possible for further information. Kind regards, Fair Canberra Executive Committee

22.01.2022 "Australian society is a mosaic of the world’s cultures, with almost half of the nation either born overseas, or with a parent born overseas, and more than 300 languages spoken." A report released today by NGO Media Diversity Australia entitled "Who gets to tell Australian stories" says, that "76% of presenters, commentators and reporters are Anglo-Celtic despite making up only 58% of the population." In the 2016 Census (Canberra pop. 196,037) approximately 25% of Canberrans... were born overseas. Approximately 42% of people had one or both parents born overseas, 16% are from non-English speaking backgrounds. According to the report, media diversity in the nation's capital reflects the national average. In Canberra 76.9% of media representatives are Anglo-Celtic along with 7.7% from European backgrounds, 7.7% Non-European, 7.7% Indigenous. Fair Canberra Inc. supports media representation that reflects the cultural diversity of the ACT.

21.01.2022 Valued Members, Following discussions with some members of Fair CANBERRA Inc, events planned for the first half of 2020 have been cancelled to ensure the safety of our members and the public in general. Specifically, the following have been cancelled:... 1. Harmony Day Netball ACT on 21 March 2. ‘Feeding the Homeless BBQ’ occurring every Friday will be suspended for the next two Fridays and reviewed as to the date of commencement. In addition the University of Canberra is well advanced in developing an app for Fair Canberra Inc to assist the homeless - the Homeless Assist App. 3. The ‘Kava Community Forum‘ scheduled for 14 May 2020 is cancelled. Fair CANBERRA Inc will instead work with ACT Health to assist the promulgation of the government’s decision to make kava more accessible to the community - this issue is important to members of our Pacific Islander community. 4. Major fundraising event for Fair CANBERRA Inc - ‘Fire and Ice Ball’ scheduled for 25 June is cancelled. However, planning for a community based fundraiser will continue at this stage to be held in October 2020. The next few months will be a ‘wait and see’ status for Fair CANBERRA Inc activities. During this period Executive Committee members will discuss implementation of those important issues identified at our earlier planning meeting and actioning these issues will take priority. Fair CANBERRA Inc. emphasises that everyone prioritises keeping safe and healthy.
21.01.2022 Following our fourth trial last Sunday, 19 January, the Executive Committee have decided to officially continue providing food and entertainment in a community environment to the homeless on a permanent basis every Friday 5pm to 7pm at Petrie Plaza, Canberra City (located behind the merry-go-round and next to the Labor Club)! As you can see our President Nic, some members and the local community were all enjoying the food and entertainment a little too much on Sunday! Our m...embers who have made regular appearances to give a hand have built relationships with various individuals and those in need always look forward to the next BBQ as they can see we are providing support from the bottom of our hearts. We also want to thank musician Isaac Cotter who volunteered his time to come sing some classic songs which everyone sang along and danced to! Our Executive Committee would love to have our members on board to volunteer their time in help prepare and give much needed food to the homeless community so if you are interested, contact our President Nic Manikis as soon as possible for further information. 20.01.2022 Member Profiles: Christina and Timote Kalonihea "Entrust Security" It's a Saturday morning and Fair Canberra members Tim and Tina Kalonihea are working at Holt shopping centre. The husband and wife team lived in Sydney for a number of years before arriving in Canberra with their son in 2011. ... Like many families in Canberra Tina and Tim know the challenges of immigration while continuing to support family overseas. Juggling several jobs in construction, security, call centres and social services to make ends meet, the couple decided 12 months ago to take a big step forward and start their own security business. The couple's motivation for joining Fair Canberra Inc. was a recognition of the organisation's unique and compassionate service given to the homeless and the opportunity to help build their business and broader community network. Both Tim and Tina agree that it's important that clients know they are safe and not intimidated by the sometimes negative image of security workers that includes the small number of women working within the industry in Canberra. In 2018, around 10% of the workforce in the ACT was made up of women compared to 14% in Tasmania and Queensland. During the tight COVID-19 restrictions in Canberra from March through to June the couple found themselves in high demand. Businesses and frontline workers were reporting an increase in customer abuse and welcomed the calming presence of a husband and wife team for their support. Drawing on their faith and the family values of their Tongan heritage the Kalonihea's business "Entrust Security" strives to work with businesses and the local community to create social spaces that are family friendly. The couple say that it's essential that security guards are able to identify behaviours and utilise their skills and techniques to de-escalate the potential for violence. To do this security guards need to build relationships, not just stand around with their arms crossed but be assertive, firm and kind. Working closely as a husband and wife team has its challenges and Tim and Tina know their strengths and how to support each other. Tina is the one who is always looking for ways to run their small business effectively and provides the grounding for the business. Tim is outgoing and brings a lot of positive energy to what he does. Anyone who has worked with him in security will know that providing explanations and getting to know people rather than using aggression goes a long way to managing any situation and building a safe community. Email: [email protected] If you are a Fair Canberra member (or would like to become a member) who has a story they would like to share about their business, community engagement or any other issues faced by our multicultural ACT community feel free to message us. 18.01.2022 Why Gungahlin urgently needs a new, built-for-purpose multicultural centre By Nic Manikis Published on Riot ACT The President of Fair Canberra Inc. wrote the following piece highlighting the importance for a new Multicultural Centre to be built in, or near, the heart of Gungahlin by the next government.... Fair Canberra Inc. has been advocating for a new Multicultural centre on behalf of our members and others, emphasizing that the growing number of multicultural community groups in the Gungahlin area need a facility for cultural activities, events, forums and other. As outlined in the article, various political parties have voiced their commitment to establish a new multicultural centre in Canberra. With the upcoming local elections, the ACT Liberals have committed to a 1500 capacity fit-for-purpose Multicultural centre in Gungahlin with a $7 million budget. The ACT Greens have also committed to establish a multicultural centre in Gungahlin. Our President underlines that this well-resourced centre will serve the many multicultural groups across ALL of Canberra and play a significant role in bringing diverse communities together for new-found friendships, support networks, cultural and language exchange, and cultural activities. Fair Canberra Inc. continues to advocate for and encourage the development of a general community centre and a fit-for-purpose Multicultural Centre in the heart of Gungahlin that will be available to all the culturally diverse community groups of the ACT. 18.01.2022 Earlier in the month Fair Canberra's new Vice President, Toa Takiari visited Karina and Lil from the Inner North Urban Farm (INUF) to see how the two community groups could work together to build stronger community support for our Feeding the Homeless Program. The INUF is "a network of vegetable garden plots on residential land in Canberra. INUF provides weekly vegetable boxes to support the resilience of our local food system and create job opportunities for young people ...wanting to farm." Today, Fair Canberra spent the morning again with Karina and Lil assisting with harvesting their first produce boxes. Fair Canberra is very pleased to announce that the INUF will generously support the Feeding the Homeless Program with a weekly box of fresh seasonal produce. A warm and big thank you to Karina and Lil from INUF for their thoughtful consideration and support towards building resilient communities

12.01.2022 Fair Canberra Inc is working with the University of Canberra to develop a HomelessAssist App that will assist vulnerable individuals in our community, in particular Canberrans who are homeless. Fair Canberra Inc recognizes that Canberra lacks a digital solution to provide critical and dynamically updated and real time resource information to the homeless population and to those who are socially isolated and economically disadvantaged in our community. The HomelessAssist App i...s a mobile application with the primary purpose of assisting homeless people in Canberra with information about free resources and supports available around them. The App will provide a platform for local businesses and individuals with the opportunity to promote and manage the resources they wish to make available direct to the homeless and other disadvantaged Canberrans. They will also have the ability to broadcast the availability of these resources in real time. The main objectives of the Homeless App are to have a technological system solution through which: 1. homeless and other disadvantaged Canberrans will be able to seek and receive services through an user-friendly system with dignity; 2. local businesses in Canberra will be able to offer their services for free to homeless Canberrans through the App as part of their social responsibility; 3. individual donors will be able to donate to support Fair Canberra Inc, to help the homeless and other disadvantaged Canberrans through the App; 4. important identity documents of homeless Canberrans can be stored on this App so that they can be readily accessible at all times by the respective individual and avoid the challenging processes of recreating these important documents if hard copies are lost; and 5. homeless Canberrans’ needs can be quickly linked to relevant service providers in the ACT. We thank the University of Canberra for working collaboratively with Fair Canberra Inc to make this App a reality and, in doing so, improving the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged Canberrans.
11.01.2022 Fair Canberra Inc. has initiated a program for homeless people in the central business district of Canberra each Friday, comprising of a BBQ and entertainment. The Program was introduced in November 2019 and catered for up to 40 homeless Canberrans in Petrie Plaza every Friday. During each weekly BBQ, entertainment was generously provided by, among others, the impressive songster Johnny Huckle and the talented Isaac Cotter. Unfortunately, the BBQ program was suspended in Apri...l 2020 due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Toa Takiari (Executive Committee member of Fair Canberra Inc) took the lead in organizing the program and ensured it was a meaningful experience for those living on the streets of Canberra. Toa and her team created a welcoming atmosphere in Petrie Plaza each Friday for all attendees. Subject to gaining approvals from the relevant authorities for use of public space, Fair Canberra Inc is looking to commence the BBQ in late September 2020. A heartfelt thank you is extended to Dr Mahmoud Eid (Principal, Islamic School of Canberra) for his leadership and support for the ‘Feeding the Homeless Program’ managed by Fair Canberra Inc. The students and parents from the Islamic School raised funds to support the weekly BBQ. While this undoubtedly supports the worthwhile program, it also instills a sense of community in students and is an important part of their education to be compassionate and caring towards those doing it tough in our community. Fair Canberra Inc extends its appreciation for the efforts of the Principal, students and parents of the Islamic School of Canberra. Fair Canberra Inc also encourages other organisations and businesses to contribute directly to supporting those disadvantaged in our community.
11.01.2022 Fair Canberra Inc. warmly thanks the students, parents, staff and Principal, Dr. Mahmoud Eid from the Islamic School of Canberra for showing compassion and leadership in raising funds to support homeless Canberrans through Fair Canberra's "Feeding the Homeless Program". President of Fair Canberra Inc, Nic Manikis along with executive committee members presented Dr. Eid with a certificate of appreciation for the contribution made by the students towards the programme. Fair... Canberra Inc. also got the opportunity to thank some of the students in Ms. Mariam Haider's kindergarden class. Students at the school raised money by saving a small amount of their pocket money. Dr. Eid says that students are regularly encouraged to reflect on the lives of others and consider how they may be able to do something charitable by thinking about what it would be like to walk in their shoes. Thank you to all of the students and staff at the Islamic School of Canberra in Weston Creek. @IslamicSchoolofCanberra

04.01.2022 We would like to acknowledge and extend our gratitude to one of our Fair Canberra Inc. members, Dr. Teisa Holani, for her hard work, especially during this challenging year. Dr. Holani graduated with a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the Australian National University in 2018. Since then, she has been working interchangeably at both hospitals in Canberra. Dr. Holani also dedicated her time to the coronavirus response at the Canberra Hospital for a couple of months earlier... this year. Her help at the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic is a true inspiration to work hard to achieve your goals and to give back to the community. Incredibly, her passion for health and medicine goes beyond her full-time job. Dr. Holani has been using her social platforms to support and encourage youth wishing to become healthcare workers. She has also shared her knowledge and experience in various ways within the Pacific communities. The service, time and support given by all doctors, nurses, cleaners and other healthcare workers at the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic is greatly appreciated. A huge thank you to everyone for practising social distancing, regularly washing their hands and respecting the restrictions set in place for our safety and wellbeing. Let’s continue this fight together and keep supporting each other during this time.

01.01.2022 Fair Canberra Inc. has initiated a new program to deliver nutritious food packs to the homelessness in several areas of Canberra CBD from this Saturday, on a weekly basis. This approach has been taken into consideration as a valuable alternative to the ‘Feeding the Homeless BBQ’. We thoroughly enjoyed providing support and necessities amongst a positive environment, and listening to live entertainment with the homelessness. It became fundamental that we continue the program ...while respecting current Covid-19 regulations. Delivering food packs will be on every Saturday until we can resume the BBQ and the volunteers will be maintaining safety measures at all times. Although we are unable to spend extended time with the homeless, we are determined to provide support for them during this challenging time. At the beginning we will be providing around 30-40 food packs which will include healthy sandwiches, packet of chips, fruit, biscuits, and drinks, which will all be carefully packed to adhere with health and wellbeing requirements. Program: Food Pack Delivery for the Homelessness Date: Every Saturday Time: 10am-1pm If you would like to participate in delivering the food packs or assist in another way, please send us a message on Facebook and we will get back to you as soon as possible. It would be great to have you supporting this program! Fair Canberra Inc. will continue to support and contribute to the disadvantaged in the communities of Canberra, and encourage other organisations in Canberra to do the same.
