25.01.2022 14 October 1924, The opening of the Regents Park Line from Lidcombe to Cabramatta. This photograph shows people standing on the platform at Cabramatta station. Men, women and children are all wearing hats, waiting eagerly to board the new train line. A crowd has gathered on the footbridge over the railway observing the spectacle. The image is a candid shot, showing us a true glimpse of life in the past. Did you know that it’s History Week this week? 24.01.2022 Almost 200 years ago, a young boy named John Worthy attended the Male Orphan School in Bonnyrigg. John had become an orphan in 1822 at just 2 years old when his mother died and his father sailed back to England, leaving John behind. He first lived with Elizabeth and John Cunningham until they sent him to the Male Orphan School because he had very bad habits and if not duly checked will become a reputed thief. In 1829 at the age of 8, John started at the school. He learned a...rithmetic and to read and write well enough to become a mechanic, farmer, servant or labourer. In 1833, after some years of studying and an unsuccessful apprenticeship, John ran away. He probably absconded because of the dire living situation and strict rules at the school. John later worked as a mariner, following in his father's footsteps. For more information on the Male Orphan School, head over to the Fairfield City Heritage Collection: https://heritagecollection.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au///1136 Image: John's admission record - original held at NSW State Archives & Records.

24.01.2022 Sisters Anna and Eva Jeffres were both born in Fairfield in their family’s home, Caversham. Eva later gave birth to her three children, Malcolm, Gordon and Joan in the home’s front bedroom. After her husband Alfred passed away in 1937 from damage to his lungs when he served in WWI, Eva moved her children to the home they had built next door. To raise her children, Eva collected discarded newspapers to light the stove, traded coupons for food, grew vegetables and kept goats, c...hickens and ducks. Eva became the oldest resident of Fairfield in 2001, she was 106 years old. Eva would have been 12 in this photo with her sister. It is on display in Caversham which is now part of the Vintage Village at FCMG. https://heritagecollection.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au///1223 Did you know it’s History Week this week? 23.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will be, brings to mind the recent FCMG exhibition, SOLASTALGIA: Mawa Ngurra. Featuring newly commissioned works by eight artists, who identify as Aboriginal Australians and have a connection to western Sydney, this important and timely exhibition was developed in response to the idea of climate change and the effect it may have on the artists both personally and spiritually. In the language of the Darug people of western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, ‘ma...wa ngurra’ refers to ‘holding or grasping on to Country’. If we consider and accept that Country, always was and always will be Aboriginal land, then NAIDOC week is a timely opportunity for non-indigenous Australians to listen, to learn and to reflect on how we can use this ancient knowledge to lessen the impact of the footprints we leave. Always Was, Always Will be. To view a virtual tour of the SOLASTALGIA: Mawa Ngurra exhibition, click on this link - https://bit.ly/35d0r2K Image taken by FCMG featuring works by Victoria Woods and Jason Douglas (far left).

11.01.2022 "What Taweel's exhibition so powerfully evokes if the peculiar tension of being in the orbit of familiar languages you do not comprehend. A moment when the familiar and the strange coincide - where codes are recognised and honed in on, but exist beyond your ability to respond. With this tension lived a longing for more: wonderings about other ways of communicating with family and culture(s) that aren't situated in just one language." - Writer and Curator Nanette Orly wrote ...an essay accompanying Shireen Taweel's exhibition Switching Codes. Visitors will receive a complimentary copy of the catalogue containing Orly's essay. Shireen Taweel: Switching Codes is on display until 13 February 2021. Image by Silversalt Photography

03.01.2022 Shireen Taweel: Switching Codes | 7 November 2020 - 13 February 2021 Through a new body of work, Shireen Taweel questions the evolution of code-switching in multilingual society, unpacking the ongoing Arab, French and English cultural practices in Lebanon, and its influence on the shared Lebanese cultural identity in Australia and Lebanon. Presented by Fairfield City Museum & Gallery, Switching Codes is a collection of copper sound sculptures projecting drones of subtle tonal... variations composed from the three languages. These conical forms create a space filled with fluid harmonies alongside a series of engraved copper tablets, lending a symbolic return to the earliest known texts, and a desire for new beginnings that unify the future evolution of language and culture.
