18.01.2022 Hydatid infections do not generally harm animals, but can cause serious, potentially fatal disease in people. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant for hydat...ids to keep your dog, yourself and your family safe by taking measures, including: Ensuring dogs are treated properly prior to entry into Tasmania, and regularly thereafter (wormer tablets must contain praziquantel). For further information on worming, please contact your veterinarian. Never feeding raw, untreated offal (internal organs) to dogs. Never letting your dog roam or scavenge. Washing hands after contact with dogs or handling livestock carcasses. A successful 30 plus year hydatids awareness campaign resulted in Tasmania being declared provisionally free of the disease in 1996. Tasmania remains provisionally free from hydatid disease in dogs and sheep, however, this does not mean Tasmania has eradicated the disease. The hydatid tapeworm is present on mainland Australia in wildlife, feral and domestic animals. Ensuring that dogs are treated properly prior to entry into Tasmania is very important, as they represent a particular risk for spreading hydatids here. Safe disposal of livestock carcasses to prevent access by dogs and other animals is also key to breaking the hydatid life cycle. More information on hydatids is available on the Biosecurity Tasmania website. https://dpipwe.tas.gov.au//animal-he/sheep/hydatid-disease If you suspect hydatid cysts in a carcass, please contact: [email protected] or phone 1800 675 888 and collect and submit samples to the Animal Health Laboratory.

10.01.2022 Biosecurity Tasmania has identified Queensland fruit fly larvae in passionfruit bought from a supermarket in Launceston. Biosecurity Tasmania general manager Dr... Lloyd Klumpp said the case was reported on Monday. "It is a single post-border detection, which has occurred before and it does not constitute an outbreak under National Fruit Fly Management Protocols. This detection will not affect Tasmania’s Pest Free Area status," Dr Klumpp said. "Biosecurity is everyone’s responsibility, and this detection is a reminder of the importance of remaining alert to biosecurity risks. "Given this detection, we are asking Tasmanians to be vigilant and report anything unusual in fruit."

08.01.2022 Update on Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST) PST testing has been conducted on sentinel shellfish species since 1 June and levels have been virtually negligible ...to date. Under the biotoxin monitoring program protocols, there has been no requirement to test rock lobster prior to the opening of the East Coast Stock Rebuilding Zone season. This year, ocean conditions such as stratification of the water column by salinity and/or temperature do not appear to be conducive to producing a harmful algal bloom on the East Coast. You may see the occasional algal bloom around at the moment but these are not PST species.
