Whilst these guys don't need to be grown in soil they do need to be watered. A great gift idea or a beautiful feature piece for your garden or decorative piece for your outdoor areas.

06.01.2022 Oh! It’s coming up to Spring, I must get in and re-pot my orchids.. There is no ‘better’ or right time as such to re-pot your orchids. Orchids can be re-potted at any stage throughout the year, however below are some tips that can be of a positive influence to your plants when it’s time to re-pot your orchids. After your orchids have flowered you’ll find your orchid will have a little rest, at the first signs of new growth this is when the roots are most active which is a ...good sign to do any maintenance, example = re-potting Our handy re-potting tips: - When selecting your orchids to report we look at the division of each plant which will give you can idea as to what size to purchase to report your orchids as you do not want to use recycle pots due to virus transfer possibilities. (Very important point) - The right pot size to use for your plant is a pot size where the plant will take up 2/3 of the diameter of the pot. You don't want to use a pot far too large in comparison to the plant size to then require un-necessary amounts of potting media which will then come with a list of disadvantages. - Sterilise a pair or cutters and make a cut for your first division that you’re going to pot. Trim the root base down holding the root ball at the top of the plant above your thumb and any roots below your little pinkie finger are to be trimmed off, you then look for any dead rotten roots up under the rhizome and remove. Place a little media mix in the bottom of your selected pot then place the plant into the pot with the cuts you made to the back of the pot then fill the pot up with media gently tapping the side of the pot and lifting the plant slightly at the same time to ensure that only the roots are embedded in the media. Make sure that no part of the plant is submerged below the top of the media. - A bark mix with the addition of 20% of perlite/charcoal will help with the aeration of the root system within the pot. - Stake the plant accordingly so that it remains in a firm upright position. When the roots have grown through the media the stakes can then be removed, or left in to stabilise the plant. - Water the entire plant flushing out all the fine particles out through the bottom of the pot. - Fungicide monthly, fertilise weekly and water when necessary. Happy Growing

03.01.2022 Just a little tip reminder for the care of your orchids: Spray the leaves of your orchids only with a good quality liquid Fertilizer each week - Orchids (majority) are epiphytes being they feed through their leaves. Water your Orchids only when they need it and always the day after fertilising, AND fungicide your orchids each month. Happy Growing

03.01.2022 Phaius Lady Ramona Harris 'Looking @ You' Phaius - otherwise known as the Swamp Orchid. Phaius species are the largest ground orchids in Australia.... The specimen is extraordinarily large and would outstand a small toddler :-p

01.01.2022 The Winter Bloomer ~ Cymbidium Orchid The Cymbidium hybrids of today are much easier to grow than they were in the ‘good old days’ - standards & intermediates produce a wide range of colours with flowers in the winter months. The Cymbidium flower spike journey starts in the summer months (Jan, Feb, March) & it’s at this stage where the minimun & maximum temperatures have to be as far apart as possible. For e.g cold water from your fridge to be watered in this period which wi...ll then help produce flower spikes rather than another pseudo bulb. Cymbidiums are treated like a terrestrial orchid which are grown in a media that consists of treated orchid bark as the base with additives such a rise hulls, peanut shells & peat - these additives are designed to compost & break down to feed the orchids massive root system. Ideal location to grow a Cymbidium Orchid is in a filtered light area in a cool breezeway away from any walls/areas that can radiate heat - we don’t want to induce any heat from e.g stone or concrete walls. A Cymbidium feeds through its root system & leaves so a liquid fertiliser applied to the leaf foliage & root system is recommended. Re-potting Cymbidiums should be completed by the end of November ~ this will give the plant sufficiently time to settle prior to spiking. Cymbidiums flower spikes when opened will last weeks to months in flower which can be enjoyed in the home whilst in bloom
