17.01.2022 Early Childhood Teachers.... Do you notice some children hanging back and not engaging in active play? If children sense they can't keep up with others, they m...ay avoid activities..... Simple things such as not being able to climb, skip or jump as well as others, can start to impact a child's self perception and their ability to make friends and feel they belong. Addressing this early in life can make a big difference to the development of these children Both their physical and mental health.... Research conducted by Curtin University found children with poorly developed motor skills also perceived themselves as being less competent and having fewer play mates than their peers. These feelings can lead to an increase in anxiety and depressive symptoms in young children. So how can you help? Start by downloading this free guidebook "Making the Connections: Motor Skills and Mental Health". Designed specifically for early childhood teachers, it provides useful information and easy-to-follow activities to help young children develop confidence and improve self esteem and confidence. Click the link to get the guidebook: https://animalfun.com.au/guidebook-motor-skills/ *** The guidebook is provided by Animal Fun, an evidence-based program designed by Curtin University to improve the motor skills and social skills of young children aged 3-6 years. Children who engaged in the program showed significant improvement in motor and social skills. They also had a significant decrease in hyperactive and inattentive behaviours. The program was designed by a skilled team of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and psychologists. It's been delivered in more than 2,000 locations across Australia (and worldwide) .... plus it's backed by a three-year research study. Click below to get your free guidebook: https://animalfun.com.au/guidebook-motor-skills/ You can purchase the Animal Fun Activity Cards for $120+GST or the Complete Resource Pack for $250+GST. Or book a professional development program, including all classroom resources, for your school. Questions? Ask in the comments section below. Sue McLaren Program Director and Facilitator Animal Fun

11.01.2022 I frequently get asked about behaviour management strategies in our setting; How do I get children to follow a routine? How do I get children to respect o...ur treasures? How do I deal with temper tantrums? How do I encourage gentle interactions? Here is what I have noticed. I am the decisive element in my setting and I am the one that lays the foundation for behaviours. I do this by; CONNECTION - I can't emphasise this point enough. I connect with the children countless times a day. Eye contact, love, warmth, encouragement, acknowledgement. When children feel safe, supported and valued they can concentrate on all the other stuff! Once connection is established I then work on our ENVIRONMENT. Is it developmentally appropriate? Is it stimulating enough? Is it too stimulating? Is it over cluttered or too busy? How many levels of noise are there? Is it aesthetically pleasing, soothing and peaceful? Is it a home away from home? An environment that is warm, peaceful but also engaging further supports a child on their learning journey. Next, I will look at the children's DEVELOPMENT. If I have a child who tips our resources all over the floor, I give them opportunity for dumping, tipping and pouring in a way that is appropriate for our space. If I have a child that is throwing things, I give them opportunity to throw things (balls) in a way that is appropriate for our space. If a child struggles with a routine I open up our day so that it is flexible and takes in their need for freedom, movement and play. I give children more of the lead and support their voice and ideas. When a child is forceful with the other children I look at the why behind that behaviour and give them strategies to help them move through their play. I model gentle, loving behaviours and gentle, loving language. Managing EMOTIONS is a difficult part of growing and learning. Children encounter BIG feelings and do not yet have the self regulation to work through them. A tantrum is usually all those feelings escaping! When encountering tantrums I provide space and time for them to express those feelings. If they need to scream and yell I give them opportunity to do so. I let them know I am here to acknowledge and love them when they are ready to be supported (big feelings can be scary!) I do not shame a child for having a tantrum. They are a normal and healthy way to express emotions. Finally, when supporting behaviour I think about the whole child and the whole family unit. What is happening in their world? Has there been upheaval and stress? Are they sleeping badly? Have they been unwell? Are there any big changes? Then I offer them the gentle rhythm that they need. To eat when hungry, sleep when tired and to play freely with a supportive and loving, engaged adult nearby who is ready to gently guide them over the bumps of life.
