25.01.2022 A little bit of history.

23.01.2022 Three omnibus drivers, Willian John Hughes, Albert Dawe and Jack Douglas, appeared before the Police Magistrate on Tuesday morning for failing to adhere to thei...r time-tables. Sub-Inspector O'Connor said the time-tables were drawn up by the proprietors, and if the drivers did not adhere to them, there was friction among them. There had been a lot a of wrangling and the police had decided to put a stop to it. A fine was inflicted in each case. - Townsville Daily Bulletin, 3 November 1920 See more

22.01.2022 Well this doesn’t happen too often now . Use of the language almost appears the norm now with prosecutions rarer.

21.01.2022 This is probably happened to a few of mine. Social media however manages to record the moments before death unless Snapchatting with faces altered dramatically.

19.01.2022 May be useful site for checking for burials in this part of Ireland if your ancestors lived or prayed in the Loughrea area.

18.01.2022 Teaching Island style Miss Beryl Margaret Johnson was head teacher at the Picnic Bay School from April 1929 until September 1936. The late Annie Bowerman cla...imed that Miss Johnson was ‘lovely, very kind, much too kind to be a good teacher’ and another pupil, John (Jack) Tulley, remembered ‘we did nature study at low tide down at the beach with Miss Johnson’ where we would ‘pick up beche-de-mer and throw them at each other’. Another pupil also recalled Miss Johnson as ‘an avid collectorvery interested in shells and once a month the children would have a science lesson at low tide’. 18.01.2022 How many can agree with this in 2920?

17.01.2022 Women entering the legal circle almost a century ago.

14.01.2022 No matter how humble a person’s beginnings are it does not stop one from being well mannered. This is a lovely tribute. Thank you Vince Smith.

14.01.2022 30th SEPTEMBER 1813 . . . On this day, 30th September 1813, the strange coins "holey dollar" and "dump" are circulated in NSW to combat currency shortages. The ...coins "holey dollar" and "dump" were created by punching the centre out of Spanish dollars. The external circle was the "holey dollar" and the punched-out inner circle was the "dump". They were only ever used in New South Wales, Australia, and on Prince Edward Island, Canada. In 1813, Governor Lachlan Macquarie faced the problem of currency shortages in the young colony of New South Wales. When the British Government sent 10,000 worth of Spanish dollars (40,000 Spanish dollars) to New South Wales, Macquarie took the initiative to create "holey dollars" and "dumps". The dumps were assigned a value of 15 pence and were restruck with a crown on the obverse side and the denomination on the reverse. The dollars were worth 5 shillings and were stamped with "New South Wales 1813" around the hole. The coins were released on 30 September 1813. The holey dollar became the first official currency produced specifically for circulation in Australia. There are estimated to be around 350 Holey dollars and 1500 dumps still in circulation today. The coins were replaced by sterling coinage from 1822. Pictured: Holey dollars and dumps, Silver, Bequest of Sir William Dixson, 1952, DN/C 455-637 #australianhistory #sharinghistory #rtpa

12.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday Here’s a challenge for you. Our local history photograph today depicts a lone worker on Castle Hill with a wheelbarrow and a shovel. The phot...o is dated 22nd November 1935, and the information recorded on the back reads Constructing Castle Hill Road at chainage 7500. Can anyone pinpoint this location in line with the current markers on the hill?

09.01.2022 This happens when you hit that proverbial brick wall.

09.01.2022 Important if you want your scanned photos to be clearly seen in a printed document you produce such as your family history stories.

08.01.2022 Three heritage chimneys in Ravenswood are being restored by a Brisbane-based team of specialists, more than 100 years after they were constructed. The chimneys... were attached to the dozens of mines in the area at the turn of the century, where steam power drove the excavation and processing of thousands of tonnes of gold ore. "They were all probably used for a different purpose, I believe this one, Sunset Number Two, was used for steam so it was more or less a chimney for steam to escape," restorer Alek Potrzeba said. Mabel Mill will also be restored: Mr Potrzeba says the strength of the lime mortar and the skill of the 1800s bricklayers has ensured the structures are still in great condition. "Occasionally you'll find a brick that has a thumb print in it from when they pulled it out of the mould, which is really cool."

07.01.2022 To think that the past is now the new norm. Deliveries of groceries to the door has now become more common since Covid. Cooking at home rather than eating out, being creative away from technology, taking time to relax and enjoy our surroundings, recycling and the use of paper bags and bring your own bags when shopping are now accepted as good practice but for most of us this was our norm as children. For that generation it may have been out of necessity but now it is to reverse the damage that modern technology has brought onto our world.

06.01.2022 So Halloween is not American in origin!

02.01.2022 A must read if you intend to make your work public in journals, magazines , photo books or family stories. Identifying the exact source including author of an article or owner of a photograph must be fully acknowledged. Do you know how much of an article or book you can copy and if you can use parts of it word for word? This may help those unfamiliar with the copyright requirements. The last thing you would want is to pay out for breaching copyright.

02.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday Another great photograph from our Philip Leong Collection. On the 15th November 1962, Philip Leong hosted the grand opening of his Flinders Str...eet Foodland store with Radio Station 4AY in attendance. I wonder if anyone recognises either of the two young ladies looking at the camera?
