24.01.2022 Not all HEROES wear masks... but WE DO Right, Victorian heroes over 12 years old... We are Mask ON Are you ready? Starting 22nd July at midnight ... Melbourne and Mitchell Shire - Mask ON. Rest of us, Mask ON when physical distancing is NOT possible. What sort mask should I wear? For daily use, a PROPER cloth mask is adequate. Save money and save the environment because mask wearing will be with us for many months. Proper cloth mask pattern here https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au//Design%20and%20preparation%20 Cool step-by-step vid to make DHHS mask here https://youtu.be/R1GZilOKpgQ If you are in Geelong and you want to help make cloth masks please contact MASK UP GEELONG. They are a bunch of selfless volunteers furiously sewing for those in need. https://www.facebook.com/groups/723071191814864/?ref=share Mask OFF If you need to take your mask off temporarily: 1. Clean hands 2. Remove by handling ear loops or ties 3. Fold mask in half so the outside surface is touching each other 4. Place in clean storage area/bag 5. Clean hands (yes, again ) Should I wear a KN95/P2 mask for greater protection? The short answer is NO. These masks are designed to fit tightly and filter out small particles. For these masks to work, they must be fit-tested. Once fit-tested, thats the mask size/brand you should stick to for greatest protection. Fit-testing is only performed by trained individuals, and is not available to the general public. So, a poorly-fitting P2/KN95 mask will NOT provide greater protection; in fact, may give a false sense of security and put you at increased risk of picking up an infection. This is how fit-testing is done. Youll see it is NOT a simple process! https://youtu.be/xl4qX6qEYXU I cannot wear a mask. Do I have alternatives? Yes, you can explore face shields as they will provide a degree of protection. Check out this DIY video from a doctor in the USA https://youtu.be/pd-sZAQLomg FOR MORE FAQs https://www.abc.net.au//face-masks-melbourne-vict/12470640 We have stood strong as a community before and we CAN DO IT AGAIN Wear a mask when you are meeting people. It shows you care about them. #staysafe #strongertogether Graphic creds: unknown (wish it was my Nan cos this ladys too cool)

12.01.2022 TO MASK OR NOT TO MASK? Wearing face masks in public places has finally been given the stamp of approval in Melbourne due to the spike in COVID-19 cases this week. (EDIT 17 July 2020 - mask wearing in regional Victoria now recommended also if physical distancing cannot be assured.)... So why should we wear them? Before people show COVID-19 symptoms, they go through a "pre-symptomatic" phase. Some people dont even have symptoms when infected - these are "asymptomatic carriers". If an asymptomatic person doesnt wear a mask, they are like a naked person running around and weeing indiscriminately, spraying on others. Eeewww... If a pre-symptomatic/asymptomatic person wears a mask, they PROTECT those they come into contact with. Kinda like wearing pants. You would only wet yourself but not others. If we all wear masks when in public, we reduce the risk of passing on or contracting COVID-19. Thats sensible. We reckon: wear a mask when youre meeting people and cant physically distance properly. That shows you care about them. Simples. (DHHS mask recommendations here ) https://youtu.be/nwXJtN2Yt60 How to make your own cloth masks https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au//Design%20and%20preparation%20 #bekind #cleanhands #socialdistance #stayhome #gettested #wearamask (image credit - Reddit, original source unknown) ADDENDUM - 13 July 2020 This post has received more attention than we had anticipated, so thank you for reading, acting and sharing. Just some additional points. In Australia, mask wearing should be done TOGETHER with other measures ALREADY in place. We all know them of course but here they are again (1) physical distancing 1.5 metres (2) Clean hands (20 seconds wash with soap and water or sanitiser with at least 60% ethanol) (3) stay home if unwell (4) get tested even if you have the slightest symptoms Have a great, COVID-safe week ahead, everyone!

08.01.2022 How many of you have woken up with a scratchy throat and thought of the C word (or some other word ) straightaway?? Well, you arent alone! Firstly, thank YOU for thinking of the C word and getting tested. This will help protect all of us, especially the vulnerable members of our community.... Secondly, you will be glad to know that most people are testing negative for COVID-19 but positive for rhinovirus - the virus which causes the common cold, which runs rife in winter. This year we are seeing a relatively late spike of rhinovirus infections, thanks to school closures AND the good habits people have put in place since February. Rhinovirus infections have mainly appeared after children started returning to schools and childcare in late May, which is a good reminder for us parents not to send snotty kids to school, no matter how well they appear to us. Heres a great graphic courtesy of Queensland Health that helps differentiate symptoms of COVID-19 from colds and influenza (the flu). The bottom line is: it doesnt beat getting tested! If you need medical care, call us: we are here for you. Otherwise, click on the links below to find out where your closest drive-through testing centres are located. 07.01.2022 A gentle reminder from Barwon Health. As a community, we cannot let our guard down. Anyone with fever or respiratory symptoms needs to do the right thing and get screened for COVID-19.... Why, you may ask. Its too troublesome, you may think. Its too uncomfortable, you may say. Its just a cold, right? Well, most likely it is just a cold. BUT. COVID-19 is here to stay, for now at least. And there is community transmission here in Victoria. Getting swabbed helps our public health services to identify pockets of local transmission, and move quickly to contain the spread. By containing the spread, we are protecting the vulnerable in our community: the mother receiving chemotherapy, the pop with emphysema, the child with congenital heart disease. Lets do our part: if unwell, get swabbed, self-isolate until results are known and until symptoms resolve. #staysafe #strongertogether
