23.01.2022 Heavy work or proprioceptive activities are activities that involve pushing, pulling or lifting heavy objects or items (including oneself). This proprioceptive input can be calming and organising and help to improve emotional regulation. Examples at the playground include climbing space nets, pushing a merry go round. Examples at home include helping to pack away groceries, moving toy boxes, making bed (good luck). Examples in paediatric occupational therapy include animal wa...lks, planks, pushing a ball through an obstacle course. What would be easiest to include in your family's daily routine? #heavyworkactivities #proprioception #emotionalregulation #paediatricot #calming #familyfocussedtherapy4kids #playground #spacenet

23.01.2022 Self regulation is the ability to adjust and control energy levels, emotions, behaviours and attention. Self regulation is important for managing difficult and stressful events, it helps in developing concentration, sharing, turn taking and problem solving skills. #paediatricot #familyfocussedtherapy4kids #selfregulation #iwasbeingsupervised

19.01.2022 Before writing letters of the alphabet, we need to recognise the different shapes that letters produce. As we sang the alphabet song, we found the corresponding letter tiles and then we matched the letter tiles. Learning through the different auditory, tactile and visual senses! #handwriting #letterrecognition #bananagram #paediatricot #visualperception #familyfocussedtherapy4kids

16.01.2022 Pretend play can begin as early as 15 months. Through it, children develop coordination, communication, social skills and emotional regulation. Here is my OT pretend play kit, sometimes known as my random bag of toys. #pretendplay #play #paediatricot #familyfocussedtherapy4kids

15.01.2022 Hypermobility or "bendy joints" can make holding a pencil challenging, tiring and painful. I have rarely used pencil grips on pencils because the research shows that more muscle fibres are activated when using some of the frequently prescribed pencil grips. That was until I was introduced to the Write Right Pencil Grip. What do you think?

14.01.2022 These are our family's favourite books for 0-4 year olds! Our journey with books started early as reading books was the "play" part of the newborn "eat-play-sleep" routine. First day of school today and I think how multi-beneficial reading books is and has been for our family. Emotional connection sharing the activity of reading together, attention for finishing a book before starting the next book, fine motor coordination for turning pages and opening flaps, postural skills... for sitting up to see the book, visual perception for observing details in pictures, language skills... We still read books before going to sleep. When do you read books? What are your favourite books? #familyfocussedtherapy4kids #paediatricot #reading #favouritekidsbooks #benefitsofreading #favoritechildrensbook #favouritechildrensbook #firstdayofschoolthoughts

13.01.2022 How does your engine run? Self regulation from an Occupational Therapy point of view takes into account both sensory processing and cognitive approaches. #selfregulation #sensoryprocessing #cognitiveapproach #howdoesyourenginerun #paediatricot #familyfocussedtherapy4kids

13.01.2022 An important component of Paediatric Occupational Therapy is choosing and adapting activities to the "just right" level. You know you have found the "just right" level when children are keen to participate, they find success in the activity and they are motivated to keep on going and even challenge themselves further! Watch how choosing the "just right" challenge of water painting, gave my son the confidence to go from scribbles to colouring a dot-to-dot picture in 2 weeks.

13.01.2022 We are looking for 2 - 7 year old children with speech disorders! We want to identify better ways of determining what type of speech disorder a child has so spe...ech pathologists can make decisions about what kinds of treatment would work best for them. Please see the flyer attached and please pass the information along to any carers of children with speech disorders. Thanks! See more

10.01.2022 Learning to cut with scissors requires a lot of coordination: fine motor coordination, bilateral coordination, eye hand coordination and self-regulation. It can be really frustrating (for everyone)! Here's a way to encourage participation!

05.01.2022 Handwriting, whether it is English or Chinese, is a multisensory activity. As you form each letter, as your eyes track what you're writing, as you say letter sounds and words when you write, information is being shared with language processing areas in your brain. 15 years ago, I worked in China and after spending 15min each day for a month copying Chinese texts (and looking up words I didn't know), I suddenly realised that I could read the bus stop timetables, shop signs, menu's. First photo was at the beginning of the month, second photo was at the end of the month. #handwriting #familyfocussedtherapy4kids #multisensorylearning #learningchinese #paediatricot
