25.01.2022 August is National Family History Month (NFHM) in Australia and New Zealand, and with Covid19 around us for the foreseeable future, what better time to explore your family history. Whether a newbie or an old hand, NFHM aims to provide information and events for family historians to meet and to help their research. It may not be the usual NFHM, but there will be events. The Executive of the Australian Federation of Family History Organisations (AFFHO) met recently to consider... what NFHM for 2020 might look like. They noted that it is the Australian and New Zealand local administrations and health officials who are responsible for deciding when and how restrictions are to be relaxed, and that most events are organised and managed by libraries, societies and other organisations. The Executive have decided it will encourage organisers to make their own decisions about the type of events and venues that are appropriate to local circumstances. National Family History month will be promoted and supported. The NFHM website is active and ready for events to be listed. Organising groups are able to enter their events now, and a new/updated version of the website has been created for this year. Organisations should find it easier to create events, although none of the previous login details were able to be kept. See https://familyhistorymonth.org.au/ to get started. To register and login, look near the bottom right of the home page. Our webmaster will provide support if you need it (use the contact form). This year, we will have a virtual opening event, and a virtual closing event, with details to be announced soon. There will also be some prizes available for organising groups, and for individuals. The website will be updated as soon as the details are finalised. We hope organisations and Societies will get creative and present new ways to hold Family History Month events this year. Go . . .

24.01.2022 National Family History Month (NFHM) is celebrated every August in Australia and in New Zealand. We are finding many organisations are reluctant (or unable) to hold physical meetings just yet, especially in parts of Australia, but we hope circumstances improve quickly. It is not too late to plan and advertise events, especially on-line events. If you have an ordinary meeting or event planned in August, why not promote it as happening in Family History Month, and add it to our... list of events on our website (https://familyhistorymonth.org.au/events/). If you need help, contact our webmaster via the website contact form. We currently have more than 20 events listed, but would like lots more. We have some competitions and prizes during August, so look for details on our website, and we will post more info here before the start of August. We have listed an Opening Event on 1 August, and a Closing Event on 31 August. These will be by Zoom, and you must book. The details are on the website, and include a short lecture on a major Irish Event in 1916, and a lecture on ways to track down an elusive ancestor. Places are limited, and you will need to book your place. If you have never attended an on-line lecture before, this is a great opportunity. You just need an Email address and a computer/laptop/small screen device with a web browser. We will make it easy! Our webmaster is always willing to provide any help needed (I do sleep sometimes though).

23.01.2022 The Australasian Genealogy Congress 2021 on Norfolk Island may be one of the few events to be live and in person this year. We hope that most of us will have received the Covid vaccination before August, and that the risk of sudden State closures will become less likely. You have only a few days left to take advantage of the Early Bird price, so please consider joining us in the first week of August this year. The full program is on our website, as are all the details to be able to register and organise travel. I hope to see you there. More info - https://affhocongress2021.com/

23.01.2022 Important Information from the AFFHO Council March 2020: In the interest of everyone’s personal safety, we strongly advise member organisations not to hold physical meetings at present, for whatever reason. But we do encourage you to use email and/or telephone to maintain close, regular contact with both family and society friends. Should you be feeling particularly adventurous, why not start using Google Hangouts, Skype, Webex or Zoom for the same purpose? All provide t...heir basic services for free and are far easier to use than you might imagine. Self-isolation can be very lonely and a friendly face ‘on screen’ could prove most uplifting! One thing is most certain no family historian should ever be lacking in things to do! We suddenly and unexpectedly have a wonderful opportunity to complete those all-important research documentation tasks we never previously had time for. Need a break? There are also life histories to be written, experiences to share, books to read, computer and/or research skills to enhance. We will get back to 'normal', and we are still planning for National Family History Month in August. We are monitoring health conditions closely. See more

22.01.2022 The the 16th Australasian Congress on Genealogy & Heraldry (Congress 2021) is on in August 2021, at the unique Norfolk Island. This is an Australian destination, so a passport is not an essential requirement (but is an advantage to have one). The Congress Facebook page has posts about some of the keynote speakers, including Ray Martin, Babette Smith, and Dr Liz Rushen. See the full details on the Congress Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/AFFHO2021 The full Congress program should be released soon, and early bird prices apply till the end of February 2021. Registrations are increasing, so it is worth getting in soon to secure your place. See more at https://affhocongress2021.com/.

18.01.2022 National Family History Month for Australia and New Zealand is definitely on in August this year. Covid-19 has meant it will be a little different though, as hosting organisations decide whether they can hold 'in-person' events, or on-line events. The NFHM website, managed by the Australasian Federation of Family History Organisations, encourages all history, library and other genealogical type organisations to consider hosting one or more events this August. Then, post details about your events on the NFHM website (https://familyhistorymonth.org.au). We have a newly updated site this year, and it is easy to use. If you do have any problems, please use the contact form to get assistance from our webmaster.

16.01.2022 The Australasian Genealogy Congress 2021 on Norfolk Island (1-5 August) is pleased to announce that the full program is now on the website, at https://affhocongress2021.com/full-program-v1/. There is a great mix of Norfolk Island genealogy and history, DNA, Australian and English information, from a wide variety of speakers who will appear in person. You will also have time to explore this world class island, and learn about it’s unique history. You only have three weeks to take advantage of the excellent Early Bird prices. All the information is on the website at https://affhocongress2021.com/.

15.01.2022 Next week is the final week of our 2020 Family History Month, and there are still lots of great events ahead for you to enjoy. Most are on-line, so it does not matter where you live, as long as you have a computer or smartphone. Check out all the events here https://familyhistorymonth.org.au/events/. Also, remember to enter our competition to win some great prizes. See the competition page for details. And finally, join our Closing Ceremony webinar to hear Kerry Farmer speak about using multiple records to uncover secretive ancestors.

13.01.2022 National Family History Month (NFHM) runs from 1 August to 31 August 2020. This year it is a bit different because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but we are here to promote whatever events are able to be staged. We already have a few events listed on our website (https://familyhistorymonth.org.au), and we encourage all libraries, history and genealogy groups to consider holding events if your local circumstances allow. You can list events specially created for NFHM or just include... regular family history events. Sponsorships are still needed this year, and any interested organisations can still enquire about assisting us with financial or in-kind support. Our competitions are also being conducted this year, although with a few less prizes so far. Ancestry deserves special mention as a prize sponsor in 2020, and it is not too late to add your organisation to the list. We will post more information as August gets nearer, and we encourage everyone to remind their friends and networks of this special Family History Month. August is a great time to encourage others to think about starting or resurrecting an interest in Family History. Those of us who are immersed in family research are great ambassadors to spread the word. If you need support to create your events on our website, or want to ask about sponsorships or donate prizes, our contact page on the website is the best way to reach us.

13.01.2022 National Family History Month (NFHM) begins in just over 24 hours. We now have more than 80 events listed for you to choose from, most of them on-line. It is worth a look at https://familyhistorymonth.org.au/events/. We encourage you to try at least a couple, especially if you are new to genealogy or to the technology of these events. Our first feature event is the Opening Ceremony on Saturday afternoon or evening, depending on where you live. Bookings close 24 hours before t...he event, and we will Email the link to access the Webinar a few hours before it starts. Our webmaster will monitor our NFHM website Contact Form if you have any difficulty connecting, or don’t get the Email. Just message/’contact form’ me. We will have some info about NFHM, and conduct a draw for a few door prizes. The main speaker will be Dr Rory Sweetman of Auckland, New Zealand. His topic is ‘Defending Trinity College, Dublin’, and he will tell us about the involvement of ANZACS in this little known aspect of the Easter Uprising of 1916, in Dublin. He will also promote his book for those who might be interested to learn more. There will be time for questions via the on-screen chat panel. We hope you will join us on Saturday. More information here https://familyhistorymonth.org.au/events/nfhm-opening-event/ .

11.01.2022 The Australian Federation of Family History Organisations has published the latest issue of its quarterly ‘Newsflash’ newsletter, and a copy can be downloaded from the AFFHO website, at http://affho.org/publications/newsletters/. A copy has also been sent to our member organisations to be distributed to members.

09.01.2022 National Family History Month got off to a great start with several events already held. The official Opening Event was a great success last Saturday, and we are delighted to announce that a video of the webinar will be on our website on Friday. (it was there, but I accidentally deleted the file, and I cannot correct this till I get home again to access a copy of the video.) We have just added an event for Tuesday 18 August, presented by MyHeritage, titled 'Finding Your Aussie Ancestors in MyHeritage Search Engine'. This will be great for those presently subscribed to MyHeritage, and for anyone who is thinking about joining. Join me to hear Daniel's talk, and support one of our sponsors. 09.01.2022 History in Paradise - the AFFHO Australasian Genealogy Congress: August 2021, Norfolk Island. Only a month left to take advantage of the Early Bird prices. If you are still thinking of coming to join us, you should take advantage of the Early Bird prices. Flights to Norfolk Island are limited, and many of the available seats are being held for Congress attendees. These will be released soon, if there are any left. Have you looked at the Congress Facebook page recently? https:...//www.facebook.com/AFFHO2021/ Many of the speakers have been highlighted, and their profiles shown. I have seen the full program, and it should be on the website soon. Predictably, there is a fair bit about Norfolk Island history, but DNA and AUS/NZ research is covered too. We are on an Island, and all staying in close proximity, so there will be plenty of opportunity to find others with your interests, or an expert in your brick-wall field, for meaningful chats over coffee. Plenty of places to walk, too. See more
