25.01.2022 This week is World Breastfeeding Week!! Breastfeeding your baby can be an emotional roller coaster. From pain in the beginning, and feeling like you're stuck with this tiny human sucking the life out of you - to feeling like you are smashing motherhood and nourishing your baby - then back to OMG I'm never going to be alone again - to WOW, I feel so empowered being able to soothe my baby when they are upset/hungry . SO. MANY. EMOTIONS. ... If you are feeling like this - we feel you, we have been you. Breastfeeding, although natural, for some women can be incredibly hard. Our advice would be if you are having pain or struggling while breastfeeding, then seek professional help from a qualified Lactation Consultant . The WHO recommends that babies are exclusively breastfed until they are 6 months of age and then to continue breastfeeding up until 2 years old. For some, this is super easy, others it is super hard. Go easy on yourself. Do what works for you and your family. Sarah and I had very different breastfeeding journeys with each of our 5 boys. We'll post on this separately. See more
25.01.2022 Daffodil Day!! Today the 28th August is Daffodil Day - a day that we fondly know of the bright coloured stalls and happy people selling these flowers that make the world a brighter place in so many ways. The sale of these flowers and other merchandise is vital in raising funds for much needed cancer research. Unfortunately, due to COVID there are no stalls this year and all of their fundraising is online for this year. If you have a chance and some spare change then please head to their website to make a donation. https://www.daffodilday.com.au/
23.01.2022 Asthma Week - 1-7 September 2020 Did you know that a staggering 2.7 Million Australians have Asthma? Now that we are entering spring, this is a time that we see are flare of asthma symptoms usually due to an abundance of pollen from blooming flowers and a change in temperature. ... Of the 2.7 million Australians that suffer from asthma, only 28.4% have an Asthma Action Plan. An asthma action plan helps the person with asthma and/or their carer recognise worsening symptoms and gives clear instructions on what to do to safely manage those symptoms. Written Asthma Action Plans are one of the most effective asthma interventions available and by using a written asthma action plan you can: * Reduce absences from work or school * Reduce hospital admissions * Reduce emergency visits to general practice * Reduce reliever medication use (salbumatol/ventolin) * Improve lung function. One feature of the Family HQ App allows you to take a photo of your Asthma Action Plan (and any other health action plan) and have it saved within the app at all times. You can also link medications to that health action plan and set reminders when they need to be taken. Your child's other parent/carer also has access and can view at anytime to manage their symptoms. This way everyone knows what to do in an Emergency . If you suffer from asthma and don't have an Asthma Action Plan, then please book an appointment with your GP to develop one. We are very close to releasing the app . We are making some changes based on user feedback and will be looking to release the app late September. If you want to be the FIRST TO KNOW when the app has been released, then head to our website www.familyhq.com.au and sign up to our mailing list. Thanks to @asthmaaustralia for the statistics

19.01.2022 Did you know?? Today is also International Overdose Awareness Day. Did you know that Paracetamol is the leading cause of liver failure in children in western countries. It’s really important to track when you have given your child/children medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. ... It’s easy to forget who you have given what to and when, and sometimes parents accidentally double up with medications and not realise. The great thing about the Family HQ App is that you can easily record when you have given these medications and will show you when it is safe to give another dose. Both parents can log in and see in real-time what has been given and to who, resulting in better management of your families health and episodes of illness. We are finishing up with our testing of the app, making a few changes and looking to release it in a few weeks.

15.01.2022 Liz's breastfeeding journey. We ended up with an emergency C-Section and with all the medications, stress and long labour, my milk didn't come in for a while. Harry was like a piranha, desperately trying to get milk out but he lost too much weight early on, and it took until day 6 until my milk came in and I needed to do in-line feeding to help my munchkin put on weight for the first 10days. Early on I sought help from our amazing local IBCLC, who gave us wonderful adv...ice, help and tips. Even with all of these, I struggled with my supply for the entire time I fed Harry, I needed to pump often, take lots of supplements, and gobbled down breastfeeding cookies. I was assured that I would lose weight while breastfeeding but alas that did not happen. I was so incredibly hungry that I was devouring every bit of food I could find and eating double the size of my husband meals at night time. I then found I had Excess Lipase in my milk after storing a lot in the freezer for when I went back to shift work - so had to throw it all out. Harry was NOT keen on taking a bottle even with freshly expressed milk in it and that was stressful when I had to leave him to go to work, I would have to take extra breaks and pump while I was at work in ED. I enjoyed breastfeeding most of the time - but hated it at other times. I felt lonely, empowered, needed, stuck, loved, sore, proud, I felt like a (poor supply) dairy cow. SO many different emotions. I managed to feed up until 15 months, but stopped when I was 11 weeks pregnant with Oliver and I was so sick I couldn't emotionally or physically continue. With Ollie, my supply was not a problem, I didn't need to pump, he didn't have a problem putting on weight. He also didn't want to take a bottle of expressed milk for a long time. I managed to feed Ollie until about 15 months. I fed both of my boys on demand, when they cried, they were offered boob. There were lots of tears along my journey, some happy, some sad. I miss it at times when they are sick or sad, I knew that I could comfort them in way that only I could do. Everyone's Journey is different. See more
12.01.2022 As the evening is coming to an end and most are (hopefully) winding down for day, we wanted to take some time to check in with you. We can all agree that 2020 has been an absolute DOOZY of a year. Between the droughts, fires, Covid-19 and now the political nonsense involving the borders, it has been REALLY tough. This year, more than ever, it is so important to check in regularly with friends, family, and colleagues. ... Check in with those who you think or know are struggling. Check in with those who look like they have things under control - they may have a great poker face. And be prepared for a "no" answer. Head over to ruok.org.au for tips on how to keep the conversation going. And remember, IT IS OK NOT TO BE OK. R U OK?

09.01.2022 Happy Birthday Sarah!! She is going to hate that I have done this....but when your big sister uploads lots of photos in Dropbox, it is a little sisters (me/Liz) duty to go through and find some of the funniest and put them on social media . But in all seriousness she is an absolute powerhouse and Family HQ would be lost with out her. Even though she drives me crazy with her inability to NOT edit any of my posts . Let’s see if she can restrain herself today.
08.01.2022 Sarah's Breastfeeding Journey As a GP, everyone assumed I knew what I was doing when I had my first baby. This couldn't have been further from the truth. After marathon feeding for 48hrs with P, I was crying into my lunch on day 3 exhausted and feeling like a failure. A good session with an LC put me on the right path. I thought things were poking along ok, but after a week of cluster feeding when he was 3 weeks old, and a weigh-in a 4 weeks which showed he was... only just back to his birthweight. This obviously wasn't the case. I cried ALL the way home that day. Turns out I was a 'skim milker'. I had plenty of milk, but it wasn't fatty enough to satisfy my little mate, or fatten him up. After a few weeks of increasing protein & fatty acids in my diet, + lots of fish oil - we were back on track. Going back to work part-time when he was 4 1/2 months old was a real challenge. Racing home for a feed, pumping whilst making phone calls/writing letters in my breaks, managing on-call & making sure he would take a bottle of EBM in the middle of the night was anxiety-provoking. I finally started to relax and enjoy breastfeeding when he was about 8 mths. 4 weeks later, he abruptly refused a feed. I was SO sad, but also a tiny bit relieved that I didn't have to make the active decision to wean. Turns out - was pregnant. 2nd time around - VERY different story. I read 'The discontented little baby book" when I was about 20/40 and cried my eyes out - so many of the case studies resonated with me, and I realised my first journey was MUCH harder than it needed to be. I started taking fish oil + Sustagen as soon as W was born. A more relaxed approach in the hospital about letting him find the breast and being more generous with breastfeeds made all the difference. He wouldn't take a bottle when I initially went back to work, so my nanny would bring him in for a feed. I fed him to sleep until he weaned and really enjoyed my time feeding him (until he started biting me at 7months!). 3rd time - absolute breeze with T. I would feed whilst walking about Westfield like a boss . I was really sad when I weaned, but also glad to be finally free! See more

04.01.2022 Broken Bones 2018/2019 saw us visit our local hospital 3 times with broken bones . (in all honesty - we were lucky not to get a call from child safety...) It was a VERY good lesson in empathy for me as a GP who also works in Emergency. ... It was so awful seeing them in so much pain initially, and anxiety-provoking watching them have their fragile little arms put in a back slab whilst awaiting an operation. It was terrifying and gut-wrenching kissing my gorgeous boys on the forehead before I walked out of the operating theatre to sit and anxiously wait until their broken bones were skillfully fixed. Aside from the emotional and logistical rollercoaster that this situation presented for our family, it was a real challenge managing the boy's pain in the first 72 hours. On reflection, I probably gave them too much medicine and I realised that it is SO easy to do, especially when your kids have just had an operation, or are in pain. Problem is, the right dose of paracetamol too often over 3 days can cause serious liver injury if not detected early. At Family HQ we are strong advocates for making sure you record which medications you have given your kids (or yourself). We are also advocates for choosing a single brand and a single strength of paracetamol and ibuprofen to reduce the risk of accidental overdose. Have your little people had any busters or operations?
