25.01.2022 With all the uncertainty happening around the world right now, here some practical and easy ideas to help you get through the next few weeks in ways that will make your family stronger and mealtimes easier! :) Click on link below #happyeating

25.01.2022 Many parents think their baby is not ready to transition to textured foods if they gag when given lumpy food. This is not true as babys naturally gag to protect themselves against something that is foreign. It is important to expose your baby to more textured food to weaken their gag reflex and develop the chewing skills needed for accepting and tolerating a variety of family foods.

25.01.2022 Spinach, zucchini and cottage cheese tots a protein and iron-rich finger food for 9 month year olds and beyond...plus they're really easy to make and super cute https://www.familynourishment.com.au//spinach-and-zucchin/

25.01.2022 Banana "nana" icecream! so easy to make with just frozen banana blended with different flavours to suit you and your kids liking. It's dairy free and a delicious and healthy alternative to icecream! I made a festive icecream today for breakfast by adding gingerbread flavours of ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon, topped with toasted muesli on a base of Greek yoghurt

25.01.2022 A great reflection for the holiday season :)

Its loaded with fun and creative ideas and recipes to get kids to explore and try new vegetables Getting kids involved in the kitchen is such a vital step to helping them create positive connections with food and healthy eating habits. It also helps to develop their fine motor skills, reading and listening skills, basic maths and science concepts and confidence! Here are some simp...le ways preschool aged kids can help: - stirring pancake batter - tearing lettuce for salad - adding pizza topping ingredients - squeezing juice out of lemon - measuring out ingredients in cups and spoon #getcooking #kidsinthekitchen #mymunchblog (not paid post, just sharing love) See more

23.01.2022 "What do I do if my child wont eat meat!?" Is a very common question I get from parents. Here are my few tips to make meat more welcoming for children: 1. Use mince meat as it can be easier to chew than meat pieces for younger children. 2. Keep meat moist by serving in sauces and with dips. 3. Serve meat alternatives that are also a great source or protein and iron e.g. egg, legumes (beans and lentils), fish, tofu, and chicken.... 4. Add meat into meals rather than on its own e.g. meatballs, burger patties, pasta, casserole, kebab sticks. 5. Allow your child time to become accustomed to the taste and texture of meat and without pressure! Check out my veggie loaded meatballs with sauce recipe on my website https://www.familynourishment.com.au//meatballs-with-sauce/

22.01.2022 What you say matters! So before you say 1. You dont like that 2. You dont eat that... 3. Sugar is bad for you 4. You did so well in your session, Im getting you ice cream as a reward 5. I had such a hard day at work- I NEED a wine Etc... Think about what your child is hearing 1. Its a self fulfilling prophecy- if you say that they dont eat it- then they wont. Even if they might have been interested in it just a bit... 2. Labelling bad vs good, healthy vs unhealthy creates emotional feelings around food and for the most part- guilt when they do have it. Cake is yum- enjoy it when you eat it. 3. Rewarding with food for you and your child just builds emotional eating habits and do you know what? You want to build other skills in your child, not to reach for a bandaid solution to mask an emotional response that they need to deal with. I know I joke all the time with jokes in parent sessions but when it comes to kids - I try not to do it in front of my boys or my little clients. Tell you a true and embarrassing story? My now 11 year old when he was 4 (yes 4- wait for it), said to my husband when he got home one night, mum needs a GnT, she has had a hard day!!!! I can but I also still feel horrified that my 4 year old with big ears was listening even then to my words and reactions around difficult days and alcohol. He probably at the time didnt even realise what he was saying (just that he knew his daddy would laugh) but that small comment changed my life and the way I spoke about food in front of my children. What are your children hearing? Val

20.01.2022 Mum and bub mealtimes Adapting your family meals to suit your baby is a great way to save time cooking, introduce a range of tastes and flavours and transition your baby to family foods. Pictured here: ... Simple tomato and egg scramble for breakfast Chicken with pumpkin, peas, green beans, zucchini and quinoa Bub's meal was adjusted by mashing the scramble further, pureeing the quinoa dish and opting out the salt, pepper and chilli. I included the olive oil, parsley and garlic to both our dishes. #familyfood #babyfood #startingsolids #dietitian #childnutrition #paediatricdietitian #dietitian

20.01.2022 Avocado pesto pasta with chicken and zucchini for our family dinner tonight. Bub is now 10.5 months and prefers to mostly feed himself using his hands. He is managing a variety of textures very well, so I did not need to modify this pasta for him and offered it as is Depending how your baby is managing solids, you can modify this meal by either pureeing, mashing with a fork or cooking the pasta till very soft For the pesto recipe (makes 4 adult servings)... - 1 ripe avocado - 1 large bunch yeah basil - 3 garlic clove - 1 lemon, juiced - 4 tablespoon olive oil - 1/2 cup walnuts - 1/4 cup parmesan cheese Blitz all ingredients in a food processor and stir through cooked pasta. #onemealonefamily #pestopasta #nutrition #familymeals #familyrecipes #dietitian #paediatricdietitian #startingsolids #10monthsold

18.01.2022 Is your baby teething? These will help!

17.01.2022 Lentil and pumpkin soup for baby, mum and dad. Bub tried red lentils for the first time and it was a hit! Red lentils have less fibre than other legumes so they are less likely to cause gas or discomfort...making it a great first introduction to legumes. They are also a great way to add texture and protein to baby meals. For this recipe: 200g red lentils, pre-soaked 800g pumpkin, chopped... 1 onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1sp ginger, minced 200g diced tomatoes 1.5 L no added salt stock or water (I used homemade chicken stock) 1 tsp dried parsely Salt and pepper (added after baby serve) Fry the onion with garlic. Add the rest of the ingredients. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20-25 until lentil and pumpkin very tender. Serve as is or mash/blizz the soup to your preferred consistency. #onemealonefamily #familymeals #familyrecipes #eatwell #lentilsoup #pumpkinsoup #childnutrition #nutrition #babyfood #startingsolids #dietitian #paediatricdietitian

17.01.2022 I made our current favourite pasta dish...creamy cauliflower "alfredo" pasta with chicken and mushroom This sauce tastes so indulgent and rich and an awesome way to the boost nutrient power of a dish! It also allows kids to try cauliflower when they might otherwise be reluctant to try chunks of it in pasta. I also used the new #sanremopasta pulse pasta...an excellent gluten-free option for the sensitive tummies and is made of legumes! (chickpeas and lentils) Recipe to follow on the blog.

16.01.2022 Our #onefamilyonemeal dinner last night was pan fried salmon with roasted veggies. Bub had the exact same meal mashed and with finger foods. He had the mashed version in a preloaded spoon that he fed himself and as always, enjoyed squishing and munching on the whole roasted veggies #familymeal #mealtimes #babyfood #babymeals #7monthold #blw #babyled #childnutrition #paediatricdietitian #eatwell #salmon #roastveggies #dietitian #paediatricdietitian

16.01.2022 A great initiative from Coles!

15.01.2022 Cauliflower, pumpkin and chickpea curry with minty cucumber yoghurt and rice for a #meatfreemonday family meal this all time favourite curry recipe will be on my blog!

14.01.2022 There is no reason to delay the introduction of allergen foods to your baby. Introducing at around 6 months, rather than 12 months (as was previously advised) may actually reduce the risk of your baby developing a food allergy. My top tips for introducing allergenic food: Offer small amounts of the allergen food and make sure the food is swallowed. Make sure the food is age appropriate e.g. well cooked egg, smooth nut pastes. Stay at home and offer food earlier in the ...day so that you can monitor symptoms. Introduce one allergen food per day and wait a couple of days before introducing another new allergen food. This makes it easier to detect which food (if any) is causing an allergic reaction. Once introduced, continue to offer the food to your baby regularly (twice weekly), to maintain tolerance. #allergyprevention #foodallergy #startingsolids #paediatricdietitian #babyfood #BLW #dietitian #babyweaning #childnutrition

14.01.2022 French toast fingers! A family favourite! They are perfect and soft enough for babies and toddlers learning to self-feed and a great way to include protein and calcium into their meal. We usually have them with yoghurt, honey, nut butters and fruit To make 12 fingers: cut sliced bread into 3 fingers each, whisk 4 eggs and 1/2 cup and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl, dip bread into egg mixture until well coated, cook until lightly brown on a lightly oiled frypan. Bon appetit!

13.01.2022 I always try to have our 6 month old join family meals by eating the same meal as us. Last night we had steak, roast veg and chips. Bub had his meal in pureed version and as finger foods and let him lead the way . #onemealonefamily #familyfood #familymeal #ironrichfoods #babymeals #childnutrition #blw #startingsolids #responsivefeeding #dietitian #eatwell #paediatricdietitian

13.01.2022 A great visual guide on how much food toddlers/preschooler really need! Sometimes we expect children to eat more than they need, which creates anxiety and feeding pressures at mealtimes. By knowing how much their little tummies actually need can help to relieve those pressures :) For more details on portion sizes visit: https://www.infantandtoddlerforum.org/portion-sizes-table-2

10.01.2022 Follow the division of responsibility approach This very powerful approach helps overcome mealtime stressors and allows your child to develop into an intuitive and capable eater by acknowledging that the child and parent each have a responsiblity for when it comes to feeding: Parents responsibility is what, where and when food is offered Child responsibility is how much and if they choose to eat.... Learn more about this approach and other feeding strategies on my new blog post: www.familynourishment.com.au//03/raising-competent-eat/and visit Ellyn satter's website (the feeding expert who developed this approach) www.ellynsatterinstitute.org//the-division-of-responsibili

09.01.2022 New recipe posted on blog!

09.01.2022 Pictured here is my nearly 6 month old son having a great time exploring food! There are also a few snaps of some of the first foods he has been introduced to so far. He started showing all the signs of readiness to solids at 5 months (interest in food, grasping objects and placing in mouth, strong neck control and sitting with minimal support, lessened tongue trust). So we thought we'd dive right in! We started with basic fruits, veggies and proteins that were pureed and mas...hed, alongside finger foods so that bub can explore a variety of textures. We introduced a new food every 1-2 days, starting with one meal per day and combing different flavours together. Bub is free to use his hands to feed himself, squash and mash all the foods..so it gets very messy! He prefers to take the spoon and feed himself so I have been offering him a preloaded spoon. I'll be focusing more on the introduction to solids, infant feeding and my journey with bub in future posts. Stay tuned! #babyfood #infantfeeding #blw #babyledweaning #feedingbabies #startingsolids #dietitian #childnutrition #paediatricdietitian

06.01.2022 Healthy babies and children come in all shapes and sizes The 50th percentile is not the "goal" weight, it is just the middle. A child who is on the 3rd percentile, is just was healthy as a child on the 97th percentile. What matters is not what percentile your child is not a one point in time, rather, how their growth trend looks over time when plotted on the growth charts. So, embrace your child's unique size and trust that they will grow up into the size and shape that is right for him or her #healthyateverysize #ellynsatter #childnutrition #healthychildren

06.01.2022 There is no one right amount that every child should have because every child is different! They can eat a different amount each day depending on their growth, mood and stage of development. Your child knows how much they need. Your job, as parents is to learn to recognize their cues for hunger and fullness and respond to their cues. This will help set the foundation for healthy eating behaviours later in your childs life! So ditch the recommend portion sizes and tune in to... your child #responsivefeeding #ellynsatter #divisionofresponsibility #nutrition #healthychildren #childnutrition #babyfood #dietitian #paediatricdietitian
