25.01.2022 Late last year I created two videos capturing the special collaboration between Iraqi and Melbourne musicians to compose and record 'Bakhdida'. The song and video were released today. In this accompanying clip Iraqi musicians Alaa Tammouz and Muayad Babawey speak of their flight from ISIS invasion and the meaning behind the musical project named after their destroyed home city, Bakhdida in northern Iraq. The actual music clip of the live recording at Bakehouse Studios Melbourne is also below. https://youtu.be/W56yS82ro0w https://youtu.be/tBCzXS154r4

24.01.2022 'Balance' is the first clip in a campaign we've created for the 'Back To Earth Initiative'. We travelled to farms and wineries across the state to see firsthand the amazing results and benefits of using organic compost sourced from Melbourne residents. Many thanks to Bindi Wine Growers in Gisborne, Victoria who are featured in this first clip. (A great drop you should seek out!) Creative concept and direction by Cassie De Colling Shot on a Red Helium 8K camera from Freeform Creative. We also used 'Arthur' - our very own mirror box contraption that allows easy eye contact between interviewer and interviewee in the spirit of documentarian Errol Morris. That's how we have our subject Michael at Bindi Wines looking straight at the camera in a natural way.

24.01.2022 Ensay Winery doesn't need herbicide - they use sheep to graze freely amongst the vines. Carefully placed electric wiring keeps the sheep from eating the wrong things!

22.01.2022 For this second clip in the 'Back To Earth Initiative' video campaign we travelled to McNab and Sons Orchards near Shepparton VIC. Mitch McNab is a 5th generation fruit grower and he's switched to using organic compost sourced from Melbourne residents. Many thanks to Mitch and his father Andrew for their valued time and hospitality. Creative concept and direction by Cassie De Colling . Shot on Red Dragon. Once again we brought along our mirror box contraption 'Arthur' for direct eye contact between interviewer and interviewee.

20.01.2022 Shooting a doco recently in Tasmanian highland hydro town Tarraleah with Nicola Bell and Courtney Collins.

20.01.2022 The last video in the series we've produced for Forest Fire Management Victoria. In this one you'll meet some of the people working hard in local communities to protect Victoria's parks and forests. Directed by Cassie De Colling with Marcus Thomson. Many thanks to the fine people in FFMV and the emergency sector across the state for their tireless assistance in bringing this series to fruition. It's been an amazing project! For more information you can visit www.ffm.vic.gov.au.

19.01.2022 Some 'behind the scenes' from the latest series for the ‘Back to Earth Initiative’. We wanted to find a way to make compost interesting. The solution - get up really close! We grabbed the Laowa 24mm f/14 macro probe lens for the job. A probe lens is ideal for pushing through things like foliage with a moving camera it’s basically a 40 cm long tube - so the camera body and shadow doesn’t get in the way. I’ve seen it called ‘The Anteater Lens’ and it’s not hard to see why.... This lens also has a deeper focus than typical macro lenses, which was another key idea we wanted to exploit for this project - compositions showing the foreground and background simultaneously. We also used the wide angle Laowa 15mm f/4 Macro lens for some shots. Many thanks to my Melbourne based DP friend Aaron Foley for his tireless work on this shoot. Hire him! Also, thanks to the genius Cameron Macmillan from Freeform Creative for his assistance with lenses, including the loan of his Laowa wide angle. Probe lens was courtesy of VA Hire Melbourne, who were very generous in their rental flexibility with this specialty piece of kit.

16.01.2022 Melbourne premiere of the 15 minute short film 'Djuwapada' that we shot in Tasmania last year is happening at NIDA Melbourne tomorrow night. Co-directed by Nicola Bell and musician Daniel Wilfred.

14.01.2022 It's been really enlightening to see firsthand the great multitude of activities and skills deployed by the people who make up Forest Fire Management Victoria. Here's the latest clip in a series we're producing. This one aims to give insight into how FFMV and partner agencies such as CFA respond to bushfire. Directed by Cassie De Colling with Marcus Thomson.

11.01.2022 Say hi to Wally. He loves aeroplanes!

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Director Amie Batalibasi on being named the recipient of the 2017 Sundance Institute Merata Mita Fellowship! Here's a peek behind-the-scenes showing the filming of Amie's award-winning drama short 'Blackbird' in Mackay QLD in 2015. I was in the field focus pulling for DP Mark Morris with steadicam op Glenn Clayton. Great performances and period costumes! 'Blackbirding' refers to Australia's sugar slaves - where from 1863-1904 approximately 60,000 Pacific Islanders were taken, often by kidnapping and coercion, to work on the country's sugar cane and cotton farms. Amie is currently adapting 'Blackbird' into a feature length film.

10.01.2022 The 'Growth' clip from the latest series for 'The Back to Earth Initiative'. See the post below for some behind-the scenes info.

03.01.2022 Looking pretty tuff - handheld with the Fujinon Cabrio 85-300mm on my Fs7. Shooting B camera with Aaron Foley in variable weather with animals and children eating loads of chocolate! What could go wrong?

02.01.2022 The 'Transformation' clip from the latest series for 'The Back to Earth Initiative'. See the post below for some behind-the-scenes info on some of the techniques we used to create these shots. The opening macro shot is using the Laowa 24mm macro probe lens to push through foliage. I'll add a BTS photo in the comments below. The leaves in this shot were mostly small buxton clippings.
